Deah Berry Mitchell is a cultural historian, culinary connoisseur, and celebrated columnist - a creator who has her hand in many projects, including co-founding a food and black history bus tour. She sat down with attorney Ty Stimpson to talk about growing up in Sherman and how she cultivated and capitalized on her love of food, culture, and writing.#deahberrymitchell #historian #takethisdownDeah Berry Mitchell grew up in Sherman, a slow town about an hour north of Dallas, where she spent a great deal of time as a girl in the public library and local museum. It was here that she developed her love for history, research, and writing. She later moved to Houston, where she and a roommate from the Dominican Republic began co-mingling their culinary heritages, sparking a deep curiosity in Deah about the interplay of culture, history, and cuisine. She didn't start living those passions, however, until a bit later in life when Deah - a graduate of Southern Methodist University - got laid off from her job. She started teaching cooking classes at Williams-Sonoma and a slew of artistic accomplishments took off from there. Deah's the author of "Cornbread & Collard Greens: How West African Cuisine & Slavery Influenced Soul Food." She is also the co-founder of The Soul of DFW Tours, which takes people on curated bus tours to explore black culture through restaurants and other historic sites. Deah also writes a column, "The Dish, with Deah," for the Fort Worth Report and is currently a Ph.D student at the University of North Texas studying history with a focus on foodways. You don't want miss this episode of "Take this Down" with Ty Stimpson!Learn more about Deah at her website: https://deahberrymitchell.com/Learn more about Soul of DFW Tours: soulofdfw.comand follow @soulofdfwPick up a copy of Deah's book on Amazon.Follow on IG: @deahberrymitchellTwitter: @deahbmitchellFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/deahberrymitchellChannel Page: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwwYfelc6h4G8Dj38fEz6iA

The FWHCC celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.#anettelanderos #fwhhc #takethisdownAnette Landeros grew up in San Antonio, the daughter of Mexican immigrants who instilled the importance of education and civic engagement in her from a young age. After high school graduation, she attended Saint Mary's University but quickly decided she couldn't afford private school. Without her parent's knowledge, she worked behind the scenes to secure a full-ride scholarship to Indiana University in Bloomington. She earned a degree in public policy, then moved to Austin, where she obtained her master's degree in public policy at the University of Texas. From there, Anette headed to Washington D.C. to pursue her dream of working for the federal government. She loved her job at the U.S. Department of Transportation Inspector General's Office but missed Texas and longed for a sense of community. Fortunately, her company transferred her to a regional office in Fort Worth. As soon as she arrived in Fort Worth, Anette felt at home. She began volunteering and serving on numerous non-profits, committees, and boards - including the Fort Worth Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Her dedication to service, combined with her natural leadership skills and public policy background, didn't go unnoticed. When the president position became open, she was encouraged to throw her hat into the ring. She was chosen to fill the prestigious role, and later, was also named CEO - a perfectly suited role that allowed her to combine her profession with her passion.Don't miss this episode of "Take the Down with Ty Stimpson."Learn more about the Fort Worth Hispanic Chamber of Commerce at https://fwhcc.org/Follow at @fwhcc ### Varghese Summersett Injury Law Group https://versusinjury.com/@versusinjuryOur Fort Worth-based personal injury law firm is dedicated to helping individuals who have been injured or suffered the loss of a loved one due to the negligent or wrongful actions of others.Channel Page: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwwYfelc6h4G8Dj38fEz6iA

Barry King is a renowned artist, a retired corporate executive, a gourmet barbecue sauce-maker, and the "most interesting man" that attorney Ty Stimpson knows. He has done so many fascinating, amazing things in his life that it's hard to believe he tried to end it by taking 124 prescription pills one night in a Fort Worth hotel room. Barry recently sat down with Ty for a heartfelt interview in which he talked about battling depression while living a storied life that included growing up around Muhammad Ali in Louisville, KY; pursing art and commissioning pieces for celebrities; becoming the first black vice president of Radio Shack; appearing in a famous movie with Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington; and launching a successful gourmet barbecue sauce business with his brothers. Despite all of his accomplishments, Barry struggled with severe depression and took enough pills one day to "kill four people." It didn't work. Thanks to his wife, he was found and rushed to a hospital, where he was in a coma for three days. After he awoke, he questioned why God spared him and his purpose in life. He made the decision to spend the rest of his life telling his story and doing whatever he could to remove the stigma of depression and suicide. "I know there is a God," Barry told Ty. "I know that personally because you should have never met me."
