How To Set Clear Bounadries To Protect Your Sanity
We've all got one of those friends, haven't we? You know the one I mean. You've known them for years, you see them  out and about at gigs and whatnot.  You don't really connect with them  that much, but you'd feel bad if you totally cut them out.  They call  you every once in a while for a coffee or a beer and as hard as you try  to wriggle out of it, you just can't seem to say no. And that icky, awkward feeling creeps in and you just pray for some  emergency to come up so you can dash off after half and hour or not even  turn up at all. Introducing: The Energy Vampire!! What's the harm, you might ask?  Maybe I'm this persons only friend.   Maybe they're lonely.  It's only an hour or so every once in a while. Well, maybe these things are true, but your primary concern in life  should be, wait for it, YOU!  And if the prospect of an hour of  passive-aggressive narcissism (energy vampires tend to have this  quality) doesn't make you wish the ground would open up and swallow you  whole, then be my guest. How To Be Happy With Yourself - My Personal Ah-Ha Moment That Changed It All
Have you experienced one of those moments where you blink and nothing seems the same again?  Me too.  Mine happened when I found myself living in the outback of Australia, without a TV and with no where to go for entertainment. Can you imagine what that was like?  Dodgy, slow internet, one small  supermarket, a pub that wasn't always open (just ONE pub), no TV, no  Netflix (it didn't exist in Oz back then) and only my thoughts to keep  me company.  It opened my eyes to how I had been blocking out my  feelings for years and years and now I had to face them.  I'd been  chasing happiness in the form of experiences, and life changes - all  external things.  But I hadn't addressed my foundational joy - of which  there was really very little. 7 lessons I learnt from transforming pain in to positivity
If  in the 9 years after my father died you’d have told me that I would one  day be able to see the positive aspects of losing him to suicide, I’d  have probably broken your nose and hit the bottle to console myself. You might even read that and think I’m a crazy psychopath who hated their dad. Crazy? Maybe a little.  But by no means psycho and I adored my dad with all my heart. But grief made me miserable and self-destructive and above all, stuck. It  took far too long for me to realise that I had to do something about  it.  Too many tears, freak outs, spirals of self-destruction and numbing  of feelings,  until the means, strategies and tools came into my life  and I was able to see and use them. It didn’t happen over night.   Of course it didn’t.  But over the last 12 years, I’ve learnt to love  my father for his sacrifice and let go of the blame, guilt and shame.
