**What causes Insulin Resistance? It might be more than just the food you’re eating… (2:32): Insulin Resistance, High Blood Sugar, Prediabetes, Diabetes(3:26): IR is a metabolic dysfunction in which the body does not metabolize food efficiently. (4:40): Potatoes are sugar. Carbohydrates and sugars are interchangeable(7:15): The Effects Insulin Resistance has on the body(12:50): Who is at Risk for Insulin Resistance?(18:00): Reversing Insulin Resistance (20:50): Supplements like Berberine to help reverse insulin resistance(23:00): Consistent Exercise - 20-30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise 5 days per week, or 150 minutes per week Join us on social media - Facebook: @bermanwellness , @physicaltherapynaplesInstagram: @berman_wellness, @bermanphysicaltherapyEmail us - [email protected]@bermanwellness.comCheck out our website - www.bermanpt.comwww.bermanpt.com/wellness

(0:40): Cortisol can affect our mind, hunger, weight. (1:20): Abdominal weight, diabetes, high blood sugar, high cholesterol, metabolic dysfunction can be caused by elevated cortisol. (2:20): Cortisol is a glucocorticoid hormone which can redistribute white adipose tissue to the abdominal area. (2:40): WHY Cortisol levels elevate…(3:15): There is a release of epinephrine which is a hormone released during Fight or Flight System - this can increase sugar, leading to insulin resistance, and a release of cortisol (5:15): High glycemic foods can lead to an elevation of cortisol and typically the body does not metabolize these foods efficiently. (6:00): Cortisol actually blunts the bodies sensitivity to insulin (7:00): Insulin resistance causes the body to store sugar as fat, elevated cortisol causes redistribution of fat. (8:20): What is chronic stress… why appetite is initially low, then elevates. (10:00): The reasons for chronic and internal stress(12:00): Sleep deprivation can lead to chronic elevation of cortisol and elevated cortisol levels can cause disrupted sleep. (13:00): Chronic elevation of cortisol causes several cortisol spikes per day which leads to many spikes of insulin during the day.(15:00): There are certain supplements and amino acids that can reduce the cortisol levels(16:30): Controlling the sensitivity to leptin will help control sugar intake and bring down cortisol levels.(18:40): Improving cortisol levels and blood sugar levels will drastically improve sleep. **This podcast is not to treat, but for entertainment purposes only**Join us on social media - Facebook: @bermanwellness , @physicaltherapynaplesInstagram: @berman_wellness, @bermanphysicaltherapyEmail us - [email protected]@bermanwellness.comCheck out our website - www.bermanpt.comwww.bermanpt.com/wellness

Dr. Jake Berman, PT, DPT explains why Medicare is killing your healthcare - why he has an Out of Network clinic from all insurances… Dr. Berman drives to give you the Maserati experience - give you what you need, no more, no less and to get you better faster. (1:39): If you have Medicare and you’re going to Physical Therapy, you just find a clinic in your network and they will cover a certain amount for a certain diagnosis. The PT must justify medical necessity for specific treatments for a diagnosis in order for medicare to pay the PT clinic. (2:40): Medicare decides what intervention is medically necessary. If they do not think it is medically necessary, they will not pay for it. (4:00): Medicare cares about ADLs, not Pain(7:40): Insurance companies follow Medicare’s Lead(9:19): Before surgery you have to jump through some hoops like PT, injections, etc.(11:00): BPT is out of network because we want to provide the care patients need, not what Medicare is dictating. (12:45): BPT will do exactly what you need - no more, no less. We don’t give you what we need to be reimbursed… (18:80): In Network PT still has to stay in the treatment plan dictated by insurance companies, despite PT clinic plan for the number of patients they see an hour. (20:19): The difference of treatment at in-network clinic versus out of network clinic is like a Kia dealership versus Maserati dealership - the quality of care, personal care, and the experience. **You can improve strength, inflammation, and mobility until the day that you die! (Hopefully not in the next one year)! **You do not need to live with pain, weight, headaches, or other various forms of inflammation!(2:40): Healthy weight loss is 1-2 pounds of fat lost per week!(3:26): There is a difference between Maintainable Weight Loss and Quick Weight Loss(5:36): If you do the right things for your metabolism, you could be down 50 pounds in a year. We have to look from the inside out to ensure proper, maintainable weight loss. (6:50): Weight loss is not a one size fits all - you have to put specific things together for YOU. If you don’t plan on dying this year… you CAN make progress. (14:17): By strengthening weaknesses, there is no reason that you cannot be in less pain 1 year from now. (17:20): If there is no position of relief with your pain (objectively), then surgery may be necessary. If there is a position of relief the chances of requiring surgery are low. (18:05): Biggest contributor to weakness is sedentary lifestyle. (19:00): Sitting, weak buttocks, is the most common cause to general back pain. (20:18): Walking 4 miles per day, golfing 3 times per week, playing tennis, etc does not mean you are using the RIGHT muscles or the right muscles PROPERLY to properly strengthen the muscles. (23:20): Dr. Jake tells a story about a cyclist who can cycle at 130rpm without hands, but still had weaknesses with objective tests in the office. (26:06): We are too subjective to be objective. **Jenni, Physician Assistant, and Dr. Jake Berman, DPT discuss the 3 most common Objections that we hear when clients are resistant to our programs**The Berman Method treats Problems, Not Symptoms! **This podcast is for entertainment purposes only. Consult with your primary physician prior to any changes in your exercise or dietary regimen. (3:40): The most common objection Jenni hears is that the client is afraid they will not be able to continue to “live their life” the way they want to, i.e. social events, going out to eat.(6:30): Restaurants are being much more accommodating to healthy lifestyles and food sensitivities(7:45): Jenni can generally find several things on menus for anyone to eat! (11:05): BPT is an out-of-network business. One of the most common rejections BPT hears is “I have tried PT in the past and it didn’t work” or “I did PT in the past and they took my insurance, but you don’t.”(12:30): BPT has the time for a full evaluation, identify problems and not symptoms, and is not dictated by insurance companies.(16:20): The experience at BPT and BHW is the difference between us and a corporate doctor’s office or physical therapy clinic.(18:45): The Most common objection…. Money. Why do we charge what we do and why are we out-of-network?(22:10): Often times general practitioners are not able to order the proper testing for metabolism or gut health due to insurance companiesJoin us on social media - Facebook: @bermanwellness , @physicaltherapynaplesInstagram: @berman_wellness, @bermanphysicaltherapyEmail us - [email protected]@bermanwellness.comCheck out our website - www.bermanpt.comwww.bermanpt.com/wellness

**Picking up from last week to continue speaking about Regular, Quarterly Functional Medicine Check Ups because we are too subjective to be objective for our own corrections! (:30): If you have never seen someone specializing in functional medicine and nutrition - just go to start! Nutrition can cause SO MANY diseases, autoimmune conditions, weight gain, but also athletes may not be getting the results they should be if their nutrition is not optimized. (2:00): 50% of Jenni’s practice is virtual (3:00): Toddler’s with eczema, asthma, fevers could be experiencing food sensitivities resulting in immune response. (5:00): Postpartum individuals may need nutrition support due to hormonal changes and slow weight loss. (6:40): Or an athlete that is training for something like a triathlon and needs to ensure adequate fuel for training(7:40): Once we are feeling better, once we reach our goal weight, once symptoms improve - things can start to slip. Having regular check-ups will help with accountability and refocusing. (14:00): Quarterly nutrition accountability can be to “change things up” for the metabolism OR it can be for accountability itself to keep you on track. (18:00): Food sensitivities are like a sprained ankle - if you have a sprained ankle and you keep walking, jogging, or jumping on it, the inflammation doesn’t go down. It takes 6 weeks for inflammation to improve with a sprained ankle - it is the same for food sensitivities and consuming your sensitivity.(20:00): Not only is it accountability, but also important to follow up on new products, rotating foods, checking vitamin levels, and hormone levels. **You are too Subjective to be Objective. You cannot treat yourself. You cannot heal yourself. You need objective testing, eyes, and results to get where you want to be. **Quarterly Nutrition, Exercise, and Physical checks should be done! (1:20): Too subjective to be objective - “feeling, thinking” is subjective, this is not black and white. Subjectivity is variable. Objectivity is not variable. (2:30): Dr. Jake’s story about injuring his back on the golf course and he could not fix himself. (5:30): Dr. Jake’s symptoms were similar to a herniation, but it was clear by the evaluation by a PT that wasn’t himself, but the pain was not actually coming from a herniation. (8:30): When you are “feeling” the pain, you are living it, even with high pain tolerance. (9:12): In Western medicine we have Quarterly Check Ups, but we don’t have annual check-ups physically or nutritionally. (9:53): One major problem - insurance doesn’t cover someone to have a physical therapist check their form and (generally) Americans want insurance to pay for these things. (14:45): It is important to have a qualified individual “check you” for these annual form and physical check-ups. 95% correct is not good enough - we need the time for objective testing to ensure physically we are 100% correct.(16:45): BPT is different than other PT offices because they are out of network with insurances - so they have the “freedom” to check you head to toe and identify causes for symptoms, pain, asymmetry, etc. (20:39): Something is better than nothing - going to someone with insurance is better than not going at all. (21:12): I recommend quarterly checks for physical checks or nutrition checks. However, depends on the level of activity for the individual. Remainder of this episode NEXT WEEK! **Dehydration can cause severe impacts on the metabolism, headaches, bowel movements, energy, sleep, and much more! (3:50): Causes of Dehydration(7:45): When Jenni was sick, she was drinking nearly 2 gallons of water and was still constantly dehydrated. This is a sign of a GI issue or other metabolic concern. (8:26): Effects of dehydration. (10:45): Dehydration can cause WEIGHT GAIN!(12:00): Cutting out water to reduce water weight and lose weight leads to dehydration which actually hurts the metabolism. (14:00): Dehydration can increase joint pain, inflammation, arthritis. (15:30): Drinking 16 ounces of water prior to meals can increase the metabolism by 30%! (16:40): Drinking 16 ounces when first waking up helps reduce toxins. But drinking it before every meal is also important. (19:30): Your body and bladder will adjust to increased water intake. (21:00): Jenni generally recommends 80-100 ounces of water per day with a “normal” lifestyle depending on medical conditions. (22:00): We are NOT giving Medical Advice. This Podcast is for ENTERTAINMENT and NOT as medical advice! Consult with your Primary Care Physician. (23:00): You can drink TOO much water causing hyponatremia. (24:30): Electrolyte waters: Smart Water, Propel, etc - MODERATION is key (in summary). Be careful with medications!(26:45): Does Coffee Count? Caffeine is dehydrating. (27:55): Tonic Water has high fructose corn syrup in it.(29:10): For every cup of caffeine you drink, drink equally amount of water as soon as you’re done with the caffeinated drink. Weight loss specialist, Jenni Berman, PA-C discusses her 5 Tips to Prevent Weight Gain (or maybe even lose Abdominal Weight)(0:44): Targeted for postpartum, post menopause, or the struggle with abdominal weight. (1:00): The 3 primary reasons for abdominal weight, then we will discuss 5 tips to prevent weight gain or to help you to lose weight. (1:40): Insulin Resistance, Metabolic Dysfunction, Prediabetes, Diabetes(2:45): Sleep Apnea and Adrenal Fatigue can be symptoms of IR AND cause IR. (3:40): Many times the symptoms of the IR are treated with medication instead of fixing the CAUSE of IR. (5:37): We need to utilize food as fuel so the body can metabolize efficiently instead of storing food as sugar which turns to abdominal fat. (6:06): Vitamin Deficiencies are usually related to a leaky gut and malabsorption. (8:00): Calories in and Calories out do at the end of the day affect weight gain. However, we should focus on the macronutrients instead! (9:53): Three main issues that can cause weight gain: IR, Leaky Gut and Vitamin Deficiency, Calories In>Calories Out(10:15): Discussing the 5 Things to Prevent Weight Gain or to help you Lose weight(11:05): There is a reason that you crave carbs and sugars. (12:40): What is a carbohydrate? Carbohydrates and Sugar are interchangeable. (13:28): Are you drinking enough water? (15:25): The gut is the second brain. You must have a healthy gut to prevent inflammation, absorb nutrients, and to improve the metabolism. (16:58): Move everyday. We need a calorie deficit to lose weight.(18:15): You get Stiff and then Old. If you don’t move, you get stiff. You are not stiff because your age, you’re stiff because you aren’t moving enough. (19:04): You need adequate rest to lose weight. (19:38): Getting a normal REM cycle is important to stabilize cortisol level (high cortisol levels cause weight gain). (20:26): Magnesium deficiency can also affect sleep. (20:36): Cortisol elevation can affect sleep and the cause of this can be stress or insulin resistance.
