In today’s episode, Jessica interviews Saral Burdette - an interfaith spiritual counselor, life coach and celebrant. At the age of 5, Saral stopped believing in God, but at 23, she had a mystical experience that changed the trajectory of her life, leading her to leave everything behind and pursue a life as a committed religious. Following this path, she studied with clergy from a variety of faiths, including Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism and Hinduism to name a few, developing a deep reverence for these traditions and a profound connection to God.
Using this background, Saral works as a spiritual counselor and celebrant, hosting retreats at her home in Ojai, CA. Saral officiated Jessica’s wedding in 2017, and since then, she has helped Jessica and her husband navigate different challenges as a couple and individually.
During the episode, they discuss:
The similarities and differences of the numerous faiths Saral has studied
How faith, regardless of tradition, is about awakening to love
How your life purpose lies at the intersection of joy and the greatest need in the world
How dreams can evolve and that it’s okay to make adjustments when a dream no longer feels aligned
With expertise in helping people resolve childhood trauma, move through hardship and find greater meaning in their lives, Saral shares advice on:
How to break karmic cycles through “rigorous noticing”
Somatic practices to recalibrate your nervous system
How to find the gifts within the hardships you face
The importance of connecting with others in the real world

Today’s episode is the first in a series called “Musings.” Less formal than other solo episodes, this format is a way for Jessica to share what’s on her mind right now. Think of it as a casual conversation with your best friend, where you’re bouncing ideas off each other, talking through current challenges and working things out in real time.
In this edition of Musings, Jessica discusses the importance of boundaries. She discusses three types of boundaries that are essential to set:
Boundaries between work and family life
Boundaries between your own beliefs and expectations coming from others
Boundaries between your vision and feedback you receive from others
During the conversation, she explores:
What her non-negotiables are when it comes to being a mom and what she will absolutely not miss at the expense of her work
How she needs to get creative when it comes to defining her work schedule so that her priorities as mom and entrepreneur feel aligned and meet her needs
How comparison culture can affect our thinking and why we need to tune out what others are doing and focus on what’s right for us
How to stay grounded in our own beliefs when we’re being bombarded with expectations from others
How to filter input and feedback we receive from others in order to stay true to our own vision
As she grapples with these questions, she shares the things that have helped her gain clarity on her own priorities and vision, so that you can put these practices into place in your life as well.
Do you have any tips that have helped you get clear on the boundaries you need to set? How has setting boundaries in your life helped you? I would love to hear! Share them with me on Instagram by posting a story and tagging me or DM me @_howimetmyself!

In ancient times, a warrior’s best chance at survival was a strong and healthy nervous system. Why? Because their brains, bellies, and bodies needed to work flawlessly in order to fulfill their role of protecting society from threats to peace. To do this, they relied heavily on self-care practices that strengthened their nervous systems and set them up to effectively process and digest physical and emotional threats.
Rooted in the tradition of ancient warriors in India, Marma and Ayurveda have been passed down through lineages for thousands of years and continue to be practiced today because of the profound impact they have on the health of our nervous systems, digestion and ultimately our longevity.
In today’s episode, Jessica interviews Katie Grossman, an Ayurveda and Marma specialist, about her own chronic health issues and how they led her to pursue a career in the healing arts. In the interview, they discuss:
Ayurveda as the science of longevity
How the ancient warrior tradition of Marma is applied in the modern world to help people transmute pain into power
Self-care practices to support nervous system regulation and digestion
The importance of understanding and connecting to your own ancestral lineage, including family recipes, remedies, traditions and stories
How detoxifying the nervous system helps us to come back to the truth of who we are
Katie also shares several practices that you can do at home to support digestion and nervous system regulation, including:
Self-directed Marma on the Solarplexus pressure point
Self-directed Marma on the Spleen pressure point
Belly massage
See the ‘Resources’ section below for links to how-to guides for each of these practices.

Jessica’s guest, Shana Rehwald, says that it’s her life motto “to be the me-est me. And that means showing up as the most comfortable, most authentic version of me in every situation and giving you the space to show up that way too.”
She’s been living her life this way for as long as she can remember, but it wasn’t until she found herself recently divorced, jobless and wrestling with what she wanted to do next during the pandemic that she realized this motto was also her life’s purpose.
In today’s episode, Shana shares how she hit the reset button on life, using journaling as a tool to help her manifest and transform nearly every aspect of her life. Combining the power of journaling with her life motto, she created the Me-est Me Journal - a guided workbook filled with self-discovery journal prompts and exercises to help people reconnect with themselves.
With her unique mindset and experience, Shana shares advice on:
How to use journaling to overcome imposter syndrome
How to manifest your wildest dreams with a journaling practice
