#45: Ryan Harris | Daily Habits and Mentality of a Super-Bowl Champion
Ryan Harris on The MindMill Podcast Ryan Harris is retired NFL offensive lineman, talk show host, author, and motivational speaker. Ryan is a Super Bowl Champion, who protected Peyton Manning during the Denver Broncos most recent championship season. After retiring from professional football, Ryan shifted his focus to public speaking and sharing the lessons he learned from decades of elite athletics. Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning (18) poses for a photo with teammate Ryan Harris following the AFC Championship game between the Denver Broncos and the New England Patriots, Sunday, Jan. 24, 2016, in Denver. The Broncos defeated the Patriots 20-18 to advance to the Super Bowl. (AP Photo/Charlie Riedel) Today is the final episode of the Habit hacking series here on the MindMill. Early in 2019, the MindMill teamed up with an event to promote the understanding, impact, dissection, and mastering of our personal habits. The summit, Habit Hackers, was a massive success; bringing hundreds together to learn from top performers, entrepreneurs, Super Bowl champions, and elite coaches. The day-long summit was packed with presentations and workshops to aide in mastering routines that shape our lives. I had the pleasure of interviewing the creator, David Blutenthal on the podcast to discuss his inspiration for habit hackers. We also dove into our own trials and tribulations surrounding our personal habits. Great episode, be sure to go back and give it a listen or refresher. David is expanding Habit Hackers this year with a series of mini-workshops before the next big summit in early 2020. These workshops will give people hands-on opportunities to tackle their habits in different areas of life with accountability and social support. Whether you desire to transform your personal finance habits, create a more effective communication, or build new structures for your health and fitness, you’ll find something to take on with these workshops. You can find more information about all things Habit Hackers at https://habithackers.co. Ryan Harris on The MindMill Podcast This episode absolutely flew by, and I'm so excited to share it with you. Today we are with Super Bowl Champion, talk show host, author, and motivational speaker Ryan harris. Ryan is a retired NFL offensive lineman who protected Peyton Manning during the Denver Broncos most recent championship season. After retiring from professional football, Ryan shifted his focus to public speaking and sharing the lessons he learned from decades of elite athletics. Ryan completely embodies his positivity and excitement for life. From the beginning of our interview, we couldn’t help but laugh and joke around. I don’t get too many chances to talk about football on the show, so I took the opportunity to hear from an absolute expert. After some obligatory college football trash talk, Ryan opened up about how his attitude and dedication to incremental improvements led to his longevity as a top competitor. We then move the conversation to his routines for success post NFL. Ryan has learned so much as a family man and businessman. He opens up about the daily habits that keep him at his best; as a father, a husband, and as a public speaker. Ryan Harris on The MindMill Podcast I gotta put it out there. I was only one of the multiple interviews Ryan gave this day. He got his names mixed up, and called me “Terry” towards the end of our conversation. haha while slightly embarrassing for both of us, the quality of our interview more than made up for it. I mentioned it after we wrapped up, and got him back on the air to smooth it out.

I’m Eben Pagan. I got my start in business over 10 years ago after my best friend showed me how successful he was selling information products online.  I can still remember locking myself in my bedroom for three straight weeks to write my first ebook.  When I finally finished writing the book, I put it online and went to bed.I woke up the next morning and couldn’t believe what I saw… I had my first sale. It was only one sale, but more sales came in over the next few days and that’s when I knew I was on to something…I kept growing my company and after a few years, my little ebook quickly turned into a multi-million dollar a year virtual business employing 75 people around the world. That’s when I started getting emails from people asking me for business and marketing advice to teach them how to be successful starting and launching their own businesses using my techniques and formulas.  I’ve been very fortunate to work with some amazing people like Tony Robbins and Sir Richard Branson.  I’ve devoted several years of my life to create trainings that teach entrepreneurs all my best strategies and tech...

This episode is with Julie Penner (@soulofstartups), former director of the famed Techstars business accelerator program in Boulder Colorado.  She has worked with hundreds of diverse companies; challenging, empowering, exposing, and propelling them into new arenas of success.  Despite the endless metrics and data-points of analysis, Julie maintains that its always human development that governs the success of a company.  The Techstars accelerator has expanded to over a hundred global programs, but started in Boulder.  There are few people who have the collective knowledge and experience Julie possesses.  Julie now works as COO of Halp. Julie is one of those people who I immediately felt connected to.  She has incredibly demanding schedules and responsibilities, yet I have never had an interaction with her where she has come off rushed, uninterested, or not present.  This interview was much different than i expected.  I had prepared a series of analytical questions surrounding startups, founders, and processes.  While we touch on these topics,  the resounding theme of our conversation is on intentional self-growth and genuine connection.  We discuss the emotional challenges that founders face, embracing humanity to propel teams, the power of self-reflection, and strength through vulnerability.  We also touch on intentional ways to celebrate holidays, the Burning Man festival , and the Danish lifestyle of Hygge.  Julie is a fantastic individual, i learn so much from her every time we speak.  Im proud to share this conversation with Julie Penner on the  MindMill podcast.    https://youtu.be/HVULp7oG0Dw SHOWNOTES ABOUT JULIE PENNER BIO From Linked in I am currently the COO at Halp. #39: Ayahuasca | A Life-Altering Experience
Seth's Ayahuasca Experience on The MindMill Podcast Ayahuasca is an ancient psychedelic plant medicine from South America.  Seth shares his personal relationship with Ayahuasca, how he prepares for a ceremony, and a recollection of his most profound experience, to date. I’ve been hesitant in releasing today’s episode. Not because I doubt its quality, quite the opposite in fact.  I was a bit uneasy to share this story with you because of its extremely personal and exposing nature.  There are a handful of episodes that have never made it to the airwaves, and this one could've easily collected the metaphorical dust on my metaphorical shelf.  However, in listening back to this episode, Im reminded how impactful this event was on my life, and how I still tap back into this experience for guidance and direction.  Also, my episode cohort Brian Tirey has been on my case for months to release this.  Seth's Ayahuasca Experience on The MindMill Podcast Today, I speak candidly on my own experiences with the psychedelic plant medicine ayahuasca.  Specifically, this is a recollection of a recent 2-night ayahuasca ceremony I attended.  Brian Tirey and I discuss how I prepare for these ceremonies; physically, mentally, and spiritually.  I then attempt to discuss the events and experiences that absolutely changed my life over these two nights. I say “attempt” because psychedelic experiences are near impossible to describe in words.  The word ‘ineffable’ defined as  "too great or extreme to be expressed or described in words”; is the commonplace explanation for many of these experiences.  With that disclaimer, I do my best to tell the story of what happened to me over those two nights. Seth's Ayahuasca Experience on The MindMill Podcast Ayahuasca is in a legal gray area here in the US… like many plants these days.  I say this because it’s important to understand the risks and responsibilities associated when considering taking ayahuasca.  Plant medicines such as Aya have exploded in popularity over the past decade, and many people are rushing to experience them.  There are some amazing resources out there, I encourage you to use them.  Be sure you are medically fit to ingest these substances, and that you trust the integrity of the practitioners you consider. While my own experiences with psychedelics have been overwhelmingly positive, they have also been some of the scariest and most difficult moments in my life.  This stuff is no joke, it’s unlike anything you have likely experienced.  When people ask me about Ayahuasca, I like to say that its like having a backhoe in your garage.  Its an incredibly powerful tool; but it can hurt you if your not prepared to use it.  Furthermore, it’s still a tool, not a cure-all;  it requires the user to apply what they learn to their own lives.  A couple side notes on this episode we before we dive in.  First,  I preface this story as one of the two life changing events that occurred in the Fall of 2018.  I do not touch on the other event in this episode, but it was the tragic breakup of my last band, DARKARTS.  If you are interested, I highly recommend you listen the “the story of Darkarts” episode.  While your there, leave us a review on Apple podcasts, its the best way to help the MindMill podcast.  I also recorded another podcast episode on ayahuasca.  Titled “Before & after Ayahuasca with Chip Baker.”  Go back and check out that episode if you are curious and would like to learn more about plant medicines and first-time experiences.  Seth's Ayahuasca Experience on The MindMill Podcast Alright,

#38: The Music & Story of DARKARTS
DARKARTS Band on The MindMill Podcast DARKARTS is a Psychedelic Alt-Rock band from Denver Colorado.  MindMill host Seth Marcus performed in and managed the group.  Seth and lead-singer Liat Arochas debut the ‘Mountain Sleep’ album, share the story of the band, and discuss the complexities of collaborative creation in music and life. Today's episode is very special to me.  Today we debut the album and discuss the story of my most recent musical project, DARKARTS;   Although this is just one bands story; the themes, successes and struggles echo for many of us when working creatively with others.  There are few things more difficult than building a successful band.  Just like any side hustle, it takes dedication, honest communication, late nights, and plenty of uncomfortable work.  DARKARTS was very special to me.  The music was unique and catchy, some of the best ive ever had part in writing.  Furthermore, the moments shared with these remarkable humans will shape me for the rest of my life.  Although many parts of this episode are sad, the overarching emotions i feel introducing the episode is pride and gratitude for experiencing this chapter in my life, and creating music I'm so proud of. As long as I can remember, I've been a music lover. I remember singing Beatles songs with my mom on the way home from school in 2nd grade, signing up for school band the first year it was available, my first concert (DC talk for all you christian rock purists out there), and (most importantly) my first time jamming and writing music with others.  For those out there not familiar, jamming is musical improvisation.  Getting together with other musicians and spontaneously creating songs and grooves.  It is any extremely popular style of collaborative writing, and requires music theory knowledge as well as a keen listening ear.  The result is a type of musical conversation, unique to the musicians involved and that time and place.  The beauty of jamming is that it is a universal language, it provides a glimpse into each players soul, unachievable in verbal communication.  A good jam can make great friends; and thats what made DARKARTS so special.  Each of our unique musical voices came together to write beautiful music. In this episode, I am joined by my co-write and lead singer of DARKARTS, Liat Arochas.   We get together over coffee to reminisce on the story of the band, as well as to introduce our finished album, Mountain Sleep.  Liat and I have spent a lot of time together, our candor is quickly demonstrated via our slaphappy energy at the beginning of the conversation.  Comedy is an absolute must when working together in such intimate creative setting like music.  Liat is like a sister to me, and it was very therapeutic to celebrate DARKARTS with her in this fashion.  As I mention in the conversation, DARKARTS had an abrupt and emotional ending.  Because of this,  I hadn’t spoke about the band or listened to the music in months.  Revisiting this story was challenging for me, but Im so glad I faced it, and am sharing it with you guys. Our album, Mountain Sleep, along with a live concert release is available on Spotify and other streaming platforms. Listen away, I hope you enjoy DARKARTS as much as we did.  Ok, long introduction Seth, lets get into the episode! #37: Lisa Dannen | Marketing the Cannabis Industry to a Diverse Nation
Lisa Dannen on the MindMill Podcast Lisa Dannen is the Marketing Director for NCIA (National Cannabis Industry Association).  Lisa works with companies, lobbying groups, government officials, and the public to further national cannabis reform and change of opinion. She believes no plant should be illegal and that federal cannabis policy reform is imperative to reduce social and economic inequity. Today we are with Lisa Dannen, Marketing Director for the National Cannabis Industry Association.  Lisa plays an integral part in advocating the cannabis industry to the public and the government.  Perception is everything, and in this crucial time in Cannabis reform, Lisa harnesses the facts to keep fighting for the advancement of legalization.  As we agree in this episode, cannabis reform has evolved from a controversial state law to the champion and pacemaker for all alternative medicines and therapies.  Without the stigma shift inspired by Cannabis legalization, acceptance of substances like CBD and psilocybin would never be considered today. Lisa helped me get started, she gave me some crucial advice on what to do and (more importantly) NOT to do when starting a podcast.  When starting any project, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the challenges and uncertainties.  So a huge thank you to Lisa for her aid and encouragement in getting the MindMill off the ground. Lisa and I hadn’t caught up in over a year when we met for this interview, and we had a lot to to talk about.  In this episode, we discuss how Lisa’s early interest and compassion for the homeless inspired the trajectory of her career, how she harnesses facts and data to sway public opinion and government officials, and her predictions for the future of alternative medicines. https://youtu.be/HRCD4lnD_vE SHOWNOTES Lisa Dannen Bio Lisa is the Marketing Director at NCIA and has extensive experience changing what people know, think, and do about controversial issues. Her career in communications, marketing and public policy began during her tenure at Colorado Coalition for the Homeless where she worked with the state house lobbyist to protect the housing rights of low-income individuals. Lisa then spent a year volunteering with the Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms program in New Zealand and honing her photography skills. She has also directed marketing at a start-up, The Financial Health Institute, while teaching Behavioral Economics to adults experiencing financial stress. I first discovered Nikola Power at the TechStars Sustainability Program Demo Day, where their presentation blew me away. For clarification, Techstars is an elite accelerator program for promising young companies.  It has an unbelievable success rate, and thus is an extremely prestigious and competitive program to be accepted in.  While all of the companies demoing that day were remarkable, Nikola stood out to me.  Nikola Power builds software solutions to help bridge the gap between grid power, batteries, and renewable energy sources.  The future of power is in renewables, and Nikola power provides the crucial platform for its users to switch seamlessly between optimal energy sources throughout the day.  This industry is clearly complex and rapidly developing, enter Evan Hung.   Evan is an absolute wealth of knowledge, and shares with us an insider look into the world of renewables, batteries, and sustainability in the workplace and at home.
