Munition that has not or has only partially been detonated – for instance because it has landed in water, snow or soft earth – is called unexploded ordnance. Both unexploded ordnance and munition remnants are usually found on former and current shooting ranges, in mountain target areas and on glaciers. However, they can also be found when clearing out houses, as military service mementos. Such ‘mementos’ are prohibited because unexploded ordnance is highly dangerous, especially in the hands of amateurs! What was once dangerous, possibly still is. For 30 years, the PC-7 Team of the Swiss Air Force has been synonymous with Swiss precision, dynamism and elegance. All nine team members carry out their duties in addition to their daily tasks as F/A-18 pilots. For defence against air-to-air or ground-to-air guided missiles, military aircraft deploy countermeasures known as "chaffs" and "flares". For the very first time, a scientific study is being made of how the fire from flares spreads under real storage conditions, as encountered in munitions boxes on military air bases. The film shows the preparations for and the main three-day experiment on the Hinterrhein tank firing range.

For over 150 years, the federal government has been collecting decommissioned military equipment in one form or another. As our armed forces continue to evolve, the collection will also continue to grow. Those interested can visit the individual sections at various locations in Switzerland. In Dübendorf – next to the airfield – the Foundation for Historic Equipment of the Swiss Air Force showcases the history of aviation in the armed forces.
