A Brave Space
A Brave Space
Amy and Joni
How quickly do we judge others? We have found it is difficult to judge when we seek to understand where people are coming from. A Brave Space is a podcast dedicated to everyday people and their unique experiences. We do not claim to be experts. We are learning alongside you through these conversations. In a world where opinions are often stated as facts, we invite you to have an open mind to the various perspectives of our guests. We are based out of Utah. Therefore, many of the discussions include the pros and cons of LDS culture.
14. My Codependency and Recovery
Joni gets pretty open about her struggle with codependency within the context of her previous marriage. Jessica Miller, LCSW from Thoughts on Thoughts joins us to give us a helpful clinical perspective. We discuss what codependence looks like in romantic relationships, parent-child relationships, and a relationship with God. We talk about what a boundary looks like and what might happen as we put them in place. Finally, we talk about being a whole, happy person regardless of the time and season of life we are in. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

12. A Mixed Faith Marriage
Alyssa and Joseph both grew up members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Joseph had questions regarding the church as a young man, but he continued to be an active member of the church while searching for answers. He did all the "right" things. He read the scriptures and prayed to God. He served an LDS mission. He was married in the temple to Alyssa yet the questions remained. A couple of years into their marriage, he shared his feelings with Alyssa and began distancing himself from the LDS religion. They tell us of their resulting journey which includes entering into a new marriage, shifting expectations, and learning to navigate two different faiths within their home. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

11. Victimhood in Motherhood, Marriage, and Religion
Paige Clark is a life coach whose mantra is “choose love over fear.” She talks about how she has played the victim in her life, and how she has shifted out of that role by identifying her “blind spots.” She shares with us a little of her journey including a divorce, and how she has been able to take control of and fall back in love with her life. She discusses her constant struggle with positive self-talk and her trick to fix the "biggest fat lie." Furthermore, she talks about how she has been able to gain faith in men again following her divorce.  Some books Paige recommends: The Magic Radical Forgiveness The Learning to Love Yourself Workbook The Abundance Project The Grief Recovery Handbook If you would like to connect with Paige, you can reach out to us for her information or search CoachingWithPaige on Facebook. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

10. Our Experience with a New Kind of Therapy, Shame, and Processing Trauma
No guest this week y'all! Just your two favorite hosts, Amy and Joni. We discuss our personal experiences with sand tray therapy (previously taught to us by our guest JaNae). We bring up the benefits of sand tray and what to expect if you decide to go. It's definitely not your normal therapy, but we both found it was the therapy we needed at this time. We also talk about shame and processing life at our own speed and not against anyone else's pace. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Jessica Miller is a LCSW who teaches us about attachment styles (anxious, secure, and avoidant). Attachment is often the first thing that she teaches her clients when they come to see her. It is essential. She also discusses trauma, it’s impact, and when to address it. She specializes in EMDR, and describes how it works. Jessica has her own podcast, Thoughts on Thoughts, with two of her therapy friends that we highly recommend. Book Recommendations: Attached by Amir Levine and Rachel S. F. 8. JaNae's Adoption Story
Round two with JaNae! We talk with JaNae about discovering her birth parents' backgrounds and the need to process new information each time she learns more about them. This episode needs to be listened to all the way to the end because of an unexpected twist you won't see coming. Like for real. Joni's jaw was on the floor at the end.

7. Healing Through Movement
JaNae Goodrich is a therapist who works with children, teens, and adults. She uses play, sand tray, and expressive arts therapy throughout her sessions. We discuss the benefits of using visible mediums to unravel invisible struggles. We were both skeptical of it but were totally sold on the idea by the end. She also briefly explains attachment and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).  The second portion of our conversation with JaNae will be released next week. As a side note, we bring up the podcast Thoughts on Thoughts a couple of times throughout the episode. Three therapist friends created it and are essentially offering free therapy. We’re kind of obsessed. GUYS. 6. Effectively Communicating Differences
Justin is Back! And he is joined by his long-time friend, John. We discuss some differences between extroverts and introverts, reasons why someone may not go to therapy, and how to talk to someone with an opposing view.  As a special treat, Amy and Justin talk about a recent argument they had and each of their takeaways. Their experience is helpful to couples --one being an introvert and the other an extrovert-- who struggle to communicate during conflict.  --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

5. Therapy Sesh on Postpartum Depression
When Amy was enduring postpartum depression (PPD) and postpartum anxiety (PPA), she met with Lyndsey Proctor, LCSW. Lyndsey is a maternal mental health therapist as well as the founder and clinical director of Serenity Recovery and Wellness. Lyndsey’s clinic is unique in that it offers childcare along with therapy. She understands how hard it is to seek help without burdening others and has worked hard to make it a safe place for women and children. We discuss the signs and symptoms of PPD and PPA, the top three problems Lyndsey seeks to remedy when starting therapy with a new client, and the toll perinatal mood and anxiety disorders take on the mother’s partner. Lyndsey also addresses each question submitted by our listeners. Ultimately, her advice? Mama. If you are questioning whether or not you need to see a therapist, you need to see a therapist. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
