WiMP
Jesse Draper
A podcast where I talk about life, experience and my thoughts about our world in an effort to demystify the white man of privilege, break him down, and take what's left to build others up. If you catch me trying to take myself too seriously, the gig is up.
9. Change and Relationship
Episode 9 of the WiMP Podcasts features a meditation on change and relationship. Change is constant and relationships are central to who we are and who we are becoming. Change is also something that we're often afraid of or resistant to. How might we consider these things and the relationship (see what I did there?) between them in new ways? Bryan is off this week and next week is still up in the air, so Beats with B will return in two weeks. 8. Emotional Sobriety: Feeling the Feels
This week on the WiMP Podcast I'm flying solo and diving into a glass case of emotion. First up, in What Deserves a Platform This Week, I talk about a recent CNN article exploring new studies on the trauma experienced by a growing number of Evangelicals brought on by "rapture anxiety."  Then I talk about why it is so hard for me, not only to express my own emotions, but to be present with others expressing their own. There are a number of reasons why expressing and experiencing emotion is hard for men in general including, hyper-masculinity in American culture associating emotional expression with femininity and weakness fear of vulnerability and the effects of substance abuse At the end of the episode I'm joined once again by Bryan as we explore emotions in the lyrics of Kendrick Lamar's "Father Time" from his 2022 album, Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/wimp-podcast/message

7. War of the Flea - Xicano/a/x Activism with Dr. Ernesto Mireles
This week on the WiMP Podcast I'm joined by Dr. Ernesto Mireles, faculty member in the Cultural and Regional Studies undergraduate program and the Social Justice Community Organizing Master's program at Prescott College. In this episode we talk about: Dr. Mireles's work with the Raza Unida Party Growing up in a racially diverse family in a predominantly privileged white community. Awakening his Xicano identity and the role models that led him into activism. The fight for Xicano/Latino Studies at Michigan State University. The War of the Flea - Dr. Mireles's new documentary film about that struggle at MSU. This week we're excited to present another fantastic Beats with B segment, where Bryan introduces us to a new release from D Smoke, El Rey, released in honor of Hispanic Awareness month and Mexican Independence Day (September 16). We also take a listen to the original song it was inspired by from José Alfredo Jiménez. 6. Two Lies and a Truth - Why Are Honesty, Vulnerability and Transparency So Hard?
I wasn't able to schedule a guest for this week so it's just me. Here's how the episode breaks down: In What We Learned this Week: the tragedy of factory farming. In What Deserves a Platform this Week: Patagonia saving the planet and Europe's exportation of misery. And for the main event:  Why it's so hard, particularly for white men of privilege, to be honest, transparent and vulnerable.  Why fear of the appearing weak is so crippling to men and constantly undercuts our ability to be vulnerable. And how power and shame play such important parts in all of it.  Bryan was under the weather this week, so look for Beats with B to return next week when I'm joined by Dr. Ernesto Todd Mireles in a discussion about Xicano studies and activism. 2. Weakness in Strength
This week I talk about the hypocrisy of celebrating Pete Rose, a professional baseball player who was not only banned from Major League Baseball for betting on games as a player/manager for the Cincinnati Reds, but who also admitted to sleeping with a 16 year old in 1975. We also spend some time talking about the irony of the "strong white man" in American Evangelical culture. As always, you can reach out to me via the show's email address: [email protected].
