*Trigger warning: this episode heavily discusses acts of abortion. Listener discretion is advised*
On June 24, 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled to overturn Roe v. Wade in a 6-3 vote. The ruling eliminates the constitutional right to an abortion after almost 50 years. States are now free to restrict or ban abortions. About ½ of all US States are expected to ban or further restrict access to abortion.
Not only does this takeaway our reproductive freedoms, it sets the dangerous precedent that from the moment of fertilization, we cannot choose. A state can force a person to carry a pregnancy to term, even at the greatest of personal, medical & familial costs.
Women of color will be most impacted by this overturn. Black & Latina women are respectively, 3 & 2 times more likely to have an unintended pregnancy than white women. WOC are less likely to have access to contraceptives or reproductive services. WOC are more likely to be uninsured v. White women. And Black women are 4 times more likely to suffer a pregnancy-related death v. White women.
This week's episode features a panel of women I've met as we share our personal experiences with having an abortion(s). It is a heavy episode & can be triggering to hear, however it is shining a light on a very taboo topic that many don't have the courage to speak on, yet happens more often than we think.
Abortion happens every day. Millions of people around the world have an abortion each year. But the majority of those people will never talk about their abortion experience. What if we broke our silence and told the truth about our lives and our choices? The most important conversations aren't always the easiest to have, but always worth having. Here at the Watch Us Thrive podcast, we're dedicated to creating a safe space for women to share stories they haven’t been able to talk about, and listen to stories they haven’t been able to hear. Many thanks to the women who came on to share their vulnerability!
