In the past two episodes we chatted with Mr and Mrs Waye about them making the decision leaving their home country along with their career, identity, family; in order to provide a better future for their two daughters. They shared how they recouped, rebuilt and re-flourish in Canada, their new home. In this episode of Us Mommios, we are going to learn "why" Cantonese is so important and "what" it means to the couples. They are also going to share with us how they are enjoying spending time with their grandson. Listen to grandma and grandson recite the poem about Mulan together.
From the time I decided to create this mini series of "Hong Kong second wave of Immigration", to messaging Mrs Waye on WhatsApp, to chatted with the Wayes on ZOOM, to editing for this podcast; all these bring back many memories from when I was still living in Hong Kong. Although half of my life are in the states, my heart and root is till deeply tied to HK. To cure my homesickness, I take a daily does of HK drama and Canto pop. As popular as Keung To @Mirror in HK, I started listening and falling in love with one of his song. I find some of the lyrics reminds me of the Wayes story. You can check out the song here.

Although it might not be an official government language, Cantonese is still a unique dialect that can not be replaced. Many colloquial sayings and jokes can only be interpreted with Cantonese. I am a proud Cantonese mother working on passing our Canton culture and language to my son and the future generations. During this journey, I have met many other amazing Cantonese mothers, educators, and advocates who also share the same visions, missions, goals, and stories. This is one of the most special episode to me personally. Why? This episode I got to interview my "mami" mother who also was my postpartum doula! Bringing a baby into the world is so special. While everyone is full of joy and happiness, there are also many sleepless nights and sometimes tears in front of us. I personally was very fortunate to have a healthy pregnancy, fairly smooth natural birth, and to have my mother/doula with me for the first two months. Honestly I do not remember much of first month after giving birth, everything was a blur. However, I remember waking up to breast feed my baby, eat, sleep, and repeat. I didn't have to cook, clean, or even change a diaper. My mom truly spoiled me and I can not thank her enough. My mom, Apple, who has been learning herbal medicine from her mom (my grandmother) and reading books since she was young. After retirement, my mom decided to go back to school to learn more about traditional herbal medicine and to get certify as a postpartum doula. During that time, I found out I was pregnant and I was her first client right after her completion to the course.
I hope you enjoy the episode as much as we do and remember to share with mother-to-be who might find this helpful! Last but not least, there are many ways of postpartum care, what my mom shared in this episode is based on her own opinion and experience only, please consulate with your own doctors if you have any concerns.
Enjoy!

Do you know anyone who immigrated from Hong Kong to a foreign country before 1997? Maybe you were one of them. Did you get a cultural shock? What did you miss the most about Hong Kong after you moved? Was it the street fish balls? Was it your friends in school? Or was it falling asleep to the sound of mahjong? Our mommio, Phoebe, did not get a huge cultural shock when she was eight moving from Hong Kong to Vancouver. But definitely got her fair share as and adult moving to Seattle. From questioning her life to starting her own business, what was the transition and how did she tweak her mindset? It is all in this episode of Us Mommios.
