Life Science & Breakthroughs, The Interview with Dr. Andre Isaacs, Chemist & Professor at Holy Cross
What is your ticket out of Poverty? Is it Education? Yet Education is not cheap and that’s a problem for society; that’s according to Professor Andre Isaacs whom I interviewed for the podcast episode today. It was quite powerful as usual. In retrospect, sometime ago I wrote an article in the Jamaica Gleaner saying “Science & Technology” are keys to Jamaica’s competitiveness in the global world and so, this interview In https://anchor.fm/theneoliberal a former Jamaican, Dr. André Korrie chemist/professor of Holy cross University was quite necessary and important to the discussions there. In fact, he indicated that he was not as as involved in Jamaica but would like to share his work and help them anyways he can. That’s something we will work on. He explored his work which started at U-Penn having to do with developing compounds that addressed certain types of cancers as a way to proliferate so as to disrupt a pathway. He then went on to UCLA Berkeley to work on synthesis that no one had worked on before. He is currently leading his students at Holy Cross to develop methods for making heterocycles or new structures. He revealed that this is important as over 80 percent of pharmacies and drugs that we use have these structures embedded in them. He stated emphatically that he and his students do not make drugs, just ways to make them better. Note: side effects come from structures and his work involves ways to develop structures to minimize these side effects. We discuss ways to make more global south and Caribbean or black and brown people more interested in science. He stated that people are choosing careers that can help them climb out of poverty and they don’t think about pure science - Chemistry, Physics and Biology; maybe medicine or Business but that’s it. He also alluded to the point that our education system and that the funding is not available for science in this regard. He stated that India and China have invested in their peoples so that they’re in STEM fields. But for Black people in Jamaica and the US, there are disparities and lack of interest. Example: Facial recognition are not properly black peoples due to this disparity. I asked “what’s happening in the industry and how can we become more effective in responding to new diseases and viruses?” He stated that science is powerful and that after COVID was identified, they sequences the genes and within a few months was able to develop a vaccine. This was due to MRNA technology. Nevertheless he confessed that science literacy is lacking and absent from curricula and that people don’t understand complex concepts which created the suspicions in science and the Breakthroughs; people just couldn’t understand why it took so quickly to develop a vaccine when they do not understand that science is at its pinnacle in terms of how we quickly Scientists can develop drugs to dealings with new diseases and viruses. Further, he stated that science communication is what is needed to help with breaking down these misunderstandings and of course we are the Neoliberal are always talking about the aim of communication is to make popular what was the monopoly. We delve into these and much more on the show. As we celebrate one year Sunday July 17th, we are giving back to community by raising awareness about a sport that has the potential to re-establish & strengthen community. That is what Steve Chagnon and the Tennis League Network, located in major cities in the US, is all about as they engender engagement and networking at the community levels while popularizing the sport and providing opportunities for tennis players and interests to get together to play at the non-professional level. We here at The Neoliberal Round Podcast and The Neoliberal Corporation are working to do our part in promoting & developing tennis by facilitating awareness and providing free tennis racquets to children & young people in communities such as Philadelphia, where racquets are very expensive and tennis is seen as a "white/privileged sport," but it is not. We have been going to basketball courts to demonstrate tennis visibly among these groups so that they can become interested, aware and motivated to want to play. We also give racquets to these interests who eventually begin learning to play the game. But we need your help to do so & have given out over 100 racquets already, that we have restrung and re-gripped for prospects we meet at in these communities at parks. We discussed this with Steve who indicated during the interview that he will donate some racquets to our efforts. The interview with Steve was about one hour long and we learned his motivation for starting the Tennis League Network which is running in 44 cities: Boston, Philadelphia, L.A., New York, D.C., etc. He stated that the Tennis League Network is celebrating 17 years and is about to begin its Summer Flex league tournament in several cities beginning July 20th. There is also the fall league which will begin in September. The winners and top players will square off in Miami in December. In fact, over 125 players compete in Tennis Philly alone, while New York, Boston and L.A. have even many more competitors. In the interview, Steve stated that he does not get any support from the USTA and that they have a different idea about tennis and how to develop the sport which is not necessarily ideal or working. Steve explained that while the women are doing well, men's tennis in the US needs help as there has not been much top players from the US in recent times. However, he stated that the USTA's team tennis is effective in developing tennis and developing competitors who can compete and win but that more can be done at the community levels and that programs like the Tennis Leagues Network can be supported in a more effective way by the USTA which may help to boost awareness among younger people & rediscovering its growth & popularity which has lapsed or slowed over the years. His vision for the Tennis League Network is to move beyond just having singles tournaments and having or adding tennis socials; whereby more than just two people meet up for any given match. He is hoping to have tennis parties and networking events that hosts several competitors and players in one meeting. We concluded by talking about the current top players in the league and he explained that each top players from the various leagues will meet up in December to compete against each other. All are invited to come to the event in Miami, December 2-4, 2022. For more information about the Tennis League Network, you may visit them at www.tennisleaguenetwork.com. You can register there for tournaments, meet other players in your city and or become a supporter by donating and visiting any of the tournaments coming up. Also, you may also register for the competition coming up in December where all the leagues in the network get together to compete against each other. The Neoliberal Round & The Neoliberal Corporation will cover some of these events when we can and will join Steve and the league to promote tennis by sharing opportunities like these and doing a tennis racquet drive. The Interview With David Fair On HBO’s “Eyes On The Prize,” Dealing with AIDS in the Black Community
This is the Audio Podcast interview with David Fair, Deputy Chief at TP4C, regarding his part on the HBO documentary series “Eyes On The Prize,” which is a continuation of the 1980's PBS film; the award-winning documentary series telling the stories of the civil rights movement in the US. The first two series were broadcast in the 80s and covered up to 1985, and the new series will be released next year and pick up from there.
The episode begins with an excerpt from the opening sounds of the original Eyes on the Prize series by PBS. I then share a song that I sung to transition into the discussions entitled: “You’re My Brother, you’re my Sister,” as David embodied this need to demonstrate love that does not include color. Here’s a white gay man in the 1980’s who was defying his community! The interview was extremely informative and powerful. He discusses why he was interviewed for the new documentary by the HBO crew recently and talked about his work as a Union Leader and then Spearheading the setting up of funding programs to combat HIV/AIDS IN THE 1980S. We explored how the epidemic speaks to the issue of race & inequality as there were racism within the white gay community towards black gays which didn’t have any agency of such & lack funds to get treatment or access education about HIV/AIDS. He explored how it wasn’t until 1987 that city government in Philadelphia provided funding as most of the available funds were within the white gay community (private funding); Blacks were poor. The interview is available in audio (and video only on the Spotify platform). It was one hour long & we even touched briefly on other topics such as Child Youth & Family in Philadelphia, homelessness & the efficacy of documentary films in purporting truth.
In the interview, David said he uses his white privilege to create or effect change in a positive way by working to advance the lives of black and brown people affected by HIV/AIDS in the 1980s when he went from a union leader/organizer to pressing for help to support these vulnerable group to eventually becoming one of the person instrumental and the mastermind behind the setting up of funds and created organizations that are funded to support poor black community that includes those affected by HIV/Aids; and these agencies still exists today.
The podcast is free and does not require any subscription to access, but you’re welcome to subscribe for free, Https://anchor.fm/theneoliberal/support, as we celebrate One year July 17th and so as to get updates on our newest shows. The interview will be available on #Anchor #Podvine #RadioPublic #googlepodcasts #AmazonMusic #applepodcasts #Spotify, the #alexa and at renaldocmckenzie.com and theneoliberal.com. The Neoliberal Corporation serving the world today to solve tomorrow’s challenges. The Neoliberal is a not who we are, instead it’s a strategy in society that we study along with other strategies of power.
Note from the Interview: Today 1 out of every 7 young black and brown males are affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. And it wasn’t until 1987 that black and brown gay people got any agency to deal with HIV/AIDS, thanks to #philadelphia’s #firstblackmayor. Moreover, Reagan wasn’t providing federal funding to assist black and brown people to fight the disease. And black and brown peoples living with HIV/AIDS were poor and stigmatized more heavily than their white counterparts who were also discriminated against but was said to be racist towards black gay people. The white gay community had money, so that they never needed federal funding but did not care much for black gay people and did not share their funds with black gay people who were poor. This attitude is what defied these vulnerable groups. They are all subjugated and discriminated against but weren’t as united as they still practiced a form of racism and discrimination themselves. We explored these in the interview with David Fair on #theneoliberalround podcast season 3, episode 19

We have been provocative and controversial but informative and interesting but never disrespectful. Continue to support us by subscribing for free and donate to us at https://anchor.fm/theneoliberal/support. Today’s episode is entitled: We Are One Year Old: Moore Threatens To Give Up US Citizenship Over Roe & “It’s Crazy What’s Happening in Philadelphia; Everybody is Dropping The Ball on their jobs!” We present these as two segments. But first we do another “Breaking The Ice” Segment with Donte Nelson as a warm up excercise that you can participate in. We then go into Segment one entitled: And there are those like Michael Moore who can afford to give up their US citizenship but most are not as privileged to do so. The New York Post said that Michael Moore “vows to give up his ‘privileges’ of US citizenship…” (@nypost via Twitter — see the NY Post article here https://nypost.com/2022/07/05/michael-moore-pens-woke-independence-day-declaration/). I responded: This is Nonesense! Doesn’t he still have his #whiteprivilege after he gives up his so-called privilege of #uscitizenship? That trumps all privileges. And maybe he should instead use the power that comes with his US citizenship privilege to undo the practice of (white) privilege. In order to help fight to end slavery, the abolitionists did not abandon their fealty or esteemed positions, but used it cleverly to support the emancipation of slavery—A practice that was ambivalent to their declared independence that all men are made equal, free and have the rights to life, self government, independence pursuit of happiness and rights to life. But for Moore, his rant and threats to give up his us citizenship stems from his anger surrounding the conservative values that are imposing on liberal values, and to add insult to injury, the Supreme Court overturned Roe and seem to be teetering towards more injunctions that may overturn more liberal values. You can read the rest of this in my blog at renaldocmckenzie.Blogspot.com or listen to the episode. In the second segment entitled: “It’s crazy what’s going on in Philadelphia, everybody is dropping the ball,” I explore the reason behind the statement and other issues surrounding and leading from this. I then conclude the episode. Thank you for listening and reading. The Neoliberal is a production the The Neoliberal Corporation, https://theneoliberal.com, https://renaldocmckenzie.com. Breaking News: Castro to File Complaint Against The FEC On Trumps Candidacy, & The Roe Conversations
Today’s episode is a long episode as we report on a Breaking News and also continue the Conversations surrounding the overturning of Roe (Part 2). This episode will feature two guests: Mr. John Anthony Castro, a US 2024 Presidential Candidate and Dr. Nolan Fontaine, Social Scientist and a brother from Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. The episode has several segments: the first is the breaking news: John A Castro a Republican vying for the Presidency in 2024 will be in Washington D.C. in July 25th 2022, to file a federal lawsuit in Federal Court against the Federal Elections Commission (FEC) to declare Former President Donald Trump an ineligible candidates d to have him regulated as such. The complaint will bring into question Donald Trump’s constitutional eligibility under section 3 of the 14th amendment to even be in the ballot or to be a candidate. Following the filing, Mr. Castro will have a press conference in D.C on that same day to discuss the filing and next steps. Mr. Castro has already filed a federal complaint against Mr. Trump and July 23rd will mark the 120th day since he filed the complaint against Mr. Trump and because he is a registered Republican candidate he has the green light to file the Complaint to file this federal lawsuit against the FEC on Trump’s candidacy. Mr. Castro submitted several comments on this issue and also explored issues surrounding the January 6 hearings that’s underway and responded to questions we had about the overturning of Roe. In other segments of the episode, I presented other arguments about the overturning of Roe and the issue of population change and population control and how the issue of abortion and life must also be situated within population strategy and the preservation of the status quo wept with the prediction that the majority will form the minority between 2020-2025 from studies conducted by SRBI. Dr. Fontaine joined the show to discuss these and to provide other comments on important issues in the news, such as the carjackings in Philadelphia that continues to be a sore issue. In fact, while traveling to our studios to do the podcast, Dr. Fontaine’s car was stolen but he managed to get it back. Part of the problem of rising crime and theft stems from rising poverty and falling median incomes. We commented that we need to deal with social issues and poverty in these communities such as Philadelphia where poverty is spiraling out of control. But another problem is that the District Attorneys office has not been following through on cases and dropped the ball. We discuss how the DA’s office in Philadelphia is slow to act and has allowed cases to be dismissed due to a lack of competent workers who follow up with witnesses and victims. This episode will be available as an article in renaldocmckenzie.com, theneoliberal.com and my LinkedIn News Commentary feed via LinkedIn on the Neoliberal Commentary. This podcast is brought to you by the Neoliberal Corporation serving the world today to solve tomorrow’s challenges. Is abortion a Woman's Right? What Rights does the man have and what about higher order ethics?
This was supposed to be a Podcast discussion with John Castro regarding the supreme court's decision to overturn Roe. But he was unable to join us and will do so later in the week. So we have turned this Audio/Video Podcast episode into the beginning or introduction of a series on Roe Vs. Wade where we will lay out some opening arguments and pose some questions. We will have Mr. Castro to respond or comment on these later this week on part 2 and we will also have Ms. Outland, Right’s Activist and Women’s Advocate to comment and respond in Part 3 of the series. We will then conclude with final thoughts in part 4 of the series later next week.
The Supreme Court recently overturned Roe vs Wade, thereby negating women a right that has been on the books for over 50 years. For many, Liberals and pro-abortion and rights activists, this is conservatives taking away women's rights; so, of course I’m looking forward to actually delving into this, and asking my guests about this. The fact is that the justices’ decision to overturn Roe has affected a lot of people on various levels, and it will have implications—financial implications as well—for those who depend heavily on funding that is attached to the former Law or Right in which the Federal Government was assisting with subsiding abortion and reproductive health programs, such as Planned Parenthood.
But one may ask; why should the federal government allot federal funds from taxes for a woman to execute their individual rights to abort a fetus? This question stems from the argument that if it is their individual right to abort a fetus, then that should not be subsidized.
Furthermore, the overturning of Roe for many is significant because it is a right that has been on the books for over 50 years and for many liberals and pro-abortion and rights activists, this is conservatives taking away women's rights and liberties. But Is the right to abortion an inalienable right of every American? Is it a right that is shared by all Americans? Is this right rooted in tradition, history and culture? The answer is what helped to shape today’s decision of the Supreme Court to overturn Roe Vs. Wade. We all have a right to life and we must also protect the right to life not just for self but the right of others to live. But when that right to life clashes with the right to choose then we must ask what is the highest ethic? Is it not the right to life? But is abortion of a fetus tantamount to killing a person? Well, it all depends on your value as a conservative or a liberal and this is the sticking point. But if truth be told, the fetus is part of the continuation of life itself. So then one may argue that the fetus’ life must be protected as in doing so one is protecting life itself and its continued existence.
My Pastor the Reverend Michael Caine of the Old First United church of C Christ in Old City Philadelphia said that “many were in tears over the reversal, but I was pissed,” arguing that the Supreme Court was essentially taking away woman's guarantee of self-determination which he asserted was half the public and the population rights to decide what happens with their bodies, which is now “no longer protected by the US Constitution And lurching and lurching toward states’ rights never bodes well for justice or democratic nation,” Rev. Michael Caine of the Old First UCC Church, Philadelphia. Mr. Castro said that "Men can walk away from a pregnancy. Women cannot. This biological difference creates inherent inequality that can only be remedied by granting women the equal right to walk away from an unwanted pregnancy. This is about individual liberty, personal responsibility, and equality." President Biden stated that, "The cruel truth is that overturning Roe will hit poor women and girls the hardest." We will make comments exploring these in this episode.
