Modesto golfers have lost their only dedicated practice facility with the sudden closure of Nor Cal Performance Golf Center this month. The north McHenry Avenue facility, which had a driving range as well as putting and chipping greens, closed at the beginning of November.

It’s Thursday, November 14th. I’m Natalie Gray, and here’s your local news from the Modesto Bee. Modesto has wrapped up its investigation of the April 2018 on-the-job death of electrician assistant Tyrone Darnell Hairston with a final report and firing one of his co-workers. Modesto expects to terminate one electrician as soon as this week. Hairston’s other co-worker retired effective Monday. His supervisor retired in August.

Modesto attorney Frank Carson, who has been acquitted of murder, was in court yesterday asking a judge to dismiss charges against his co-defendant, a former California Highway Patrol officer who is set to stand trial in the homicide case. Walter Wells faces charges of conspiracy to obstruct justice and acting as an accessory in connection.

It’s Tuesday, November 12th. I’m Natalie Gray, and here’s your local news from the Modesto Bee. Modesto showed its support for veterans yesterday as folks turned out to take part or watch the annual Veterans Day Parade. Several veterans’ groups took part, either walking or riding through the downtown Modesto parade route. The Grand Marshal was Salido Hernandez, who is a Korean War veteran. Also participating were more than 200 band members from Modesto City Schools campuses.

Stanislaus County has agreed to pay $7 million to the husband and young son of the woman who was fatally shot in her vehicle by one of its sheriff’s deputies, in Ripon. The attorneys for plaintiffs Hanibal Yadegar and his son, and defendants for the Stanislaus County and Deputy Justin Wall, came to the agreement during mediation in June.

In the span of just a couple of hours yesterday morning, the lives of 12 students at Lucille Whitehead Intermediate School were destroyed. As their 4th- through 6th-grade classmates watched, the kids stole drugs, were convicted and sentenced in juvenile court, and were put on probation.

High school-age mountain bikers in Modesto now have the opportunity to become part of a team to race against other students, in Northern California. An initiative 3 years in the making, the Modesto Composite High School Mountain Bike Racing Team will begin its first season in December, and preseason training this week.
