On Part 2, Episode 4 or Episode 9 of Season 4 (however you are keeping track), we welcome another Brooklyn native and a Syracuse University alum Judah, a.k.a @iamchefju, a.k.a @sellf_made, to talk about his cooking journey and where it's been taking him, and a shoutout to his homie Omar for coming through and adding on to our convo.
We start with discussing his start at selling food with his co-founded idea and brand, It's For The Culture, that took over Syracuse U by storm and how it was just something they wanted to do and did it. ATM was a constant supporter and we discussed how within the friend group, they were the main advocate when it came to the eats 😂. We later speak on the process of making the menu and the food to go onto the menu, as well as his favorite things to make the made it on the menu.
We also just go into the craft of cooking and how that started for him. We continue into little tangents of cooking and when it comes to truly building that craft, "it takes time." ATM and O reminisce over broke days during sophomore year and O's plethora of PB&J's.
We continue into a grocery shopping convo because ATM and O noticed a common issue with us is 1. shopping for longevity and 2. finding solid supermarkets in Syracuse to buy our products at (which comes back up later in the episode). ATM brings up culinary school, which takes us on a college process tangent and how that process looked like for Judah and how Syracuse not only made the most sense, but worked out perfectly.
We speak on go to meals to cook and overall thoughts on knowing how to cook and learning that process. It's really tough for those who don't know how to cook and can't take the time to be patient and learn what you're making. Speaking of cooking, we start talking about our mothers and the stuff we learned from either cooking with them or just watching. We all relate on the point of hating people micromanaging us while in the kitchen, even our mothers 🤧.
We speak on his chef business now post-grad and how balancing that with work and the real world has more so led him into catering rather than individual plates. We then go onto a culture conversation on what Bajans make best (since both homies hail from there) and then an overall convo on Caribbean cultures and foods overall (with a solid tangent on curry 😂). Somehow the three Caribbeans (everyone except ATM) go into a debate on buss-up shot vs. dhalpuri and O ends up on the dhalpuri island all by himself 😅.
We of course wrap up with a Lingo Talk with The Lingo and our Brooklyn born chef, after getting stuck for a while, gives us "no funny shit" or "nfs" and that's on the money. We also get some Bajan lingo so tune in and get in tune!
