As we have pondered the question through John’s letter - how can I be sure of my faith, John draws to the end of his letter with a statement of the threefold Christian certainty. A Christian is free from the power of sin, a Christian is on the side of God against the world and a Christian is someone who ‘knows’ God and is known by God can be certain of His promises because of this relationship. What is the test of faith for the Christian? Is it what we do, what we believe, how we act? There is a way to be a Christian of course, because there are expectation for those who profess this faith - and the first test is to understand the reality of the teaching received about God - Father, Son and Spirit and to realise that not all is of God. It's an eternal question and one so much has been written about, sung about, moves made about - yet in our wordl and sociaty love is often assocated with romance and feeling.
