I recently had a conversation with a friend who said they weren’t going to be able to change everything in their company at once, so they instead implement minimal changes to start chipping away at the system. If we continue to just center ourselves around very small changes, we’re not addressing the root cause of the inequity that has been designed to take place because we're so busy looking at the surface. As you're diving into equity work and as you're really thinking about your own organizations, push for more than just the initial problem that's coming to mind.Oftentimes, what we initially think the problem is, where we believe the inequity is, is just a symptom of something else. That something else is what we really need to be searching for.Get committed to understanding, working on, and dismantling systems.Remember that one person in your company represents a story of many individuals over the years potentially in your organization that has perpetually been harmed by the same system. We need to really look at what we can do to dismantle the system, the process, and the structure. We need to look at the roots so that we don’t end up building another system that holds the status quo, but when you look at its core, it is just as broken as before. I know we can’t get to it all in one day, but if we’re going to make change happen, we need to address the root issue. Equity is not about all the books that you read and the articles that you consume. It is about what you do when you've read that book or that article and you say, “I'm ready for my mindset to shift.” You've actually got to get out there and do the work. You've gotta change the systems. You’ve got to address the structures. There is a myth that comes up in equity work: the idea that in order to do this work well, you either need to focus on the individual side or the structural side. The individual side causes us to ask ourselves, “What's the learning that I need to do? What are the behavior changes that I need to make? What are the mindset shifts that I need to make?”The structural side causes us to look at our systems, our practices, and what's going on in our organizations or workplaces, and take time to address it from a system side. There are two parallel tracks of work that you've got to do at the same time. There is a process to how we dig in and focus not just on one aspect but on both. We need to make sure that every day we’re committing to doing equity work and doing it with fidelity. We need to be committed to doing the work well and decreasing harm in the process. Remember that it's about changing ourselves, and it's about the structures that we change at the same time.Looking to build your own organization's diversity, equity, inclusion, and infrastructure in a way that's sustainable and lives across the organization? At first glance, equity and equality seem very similar. The reality is they're both focused on fairness and justice. But as you get a little bit deeper into their definitions, you'll find significant differences between the two. Equality is focused on providing the same resources and opportunities to everyone without taking into account individual differences. Equality is like a “one size fits all” approach.Equity is more focused on providing resources and opportunities based on the impact on individualsEquity recognizes that because of how systems have been designed and what they have been set up to do, there are situations where certain individuals are privileged to more fairness or justice than others. We have to talk about the individuals that are part of a system and how systems were designed to impact certain groups of individuals based on their identity, based on certain segments, and based on traits of who they are as human beings. We're not gonna do a “one size fits all”. Instead, we're gonna try to create equal outcomes by providing different resources to different individuals based on their needs and based on where the gap in the inequity is.So what do you need to do? You need to address the inequity before you can then say equality happens. I always say equity first, then equality. Because if you jump immediately to equality, you think you may have solved it, but there's a root issue, a root in equity that has happened, and if you don't solve that, you actually will never reach equality. This is why it's important to not just talk about equity and try to use equity and equality interchangeably. We've gotta know the difference. We've gotta understand that difference, and we've gotta talk about those differences in the context of larger system change. Ready to create equity, then equality in your workplace? In today’s episode, we are digging into what equity means, as both a noun and a verb. Before we dig in and actually talk to individuals who are creating equity in their workplaces, we need to first take a step back and build the foundation for what equity truly is. Equity is a term that has a lot of different meanings, but at the core of it, it is about:How do we make sure that things are both fair and impartial? How do we make sure that we are taking on the practice of providing what is needed to ensure that everyone has access to resources, opportunities, and outcomes regardless of their differences in identity, experience, and background? You should have what you need when you need it. But the reality is, we do not see equity come into play in a lot of places. We need to take the time to start to examine our actual workplace systems, our workplace practices, and how we live on a day-to-day basis to make sure that equity rings true across any different practice. We need to understand it’s not just about what seems nice on paper or what seems like it's the right ethical practice. It’s about understanding what individuals experience on a day-to-day basis based on their identity, based on their background, based on who they are, or what the system has developed. It's our job to start to break those systems and to start to examine and question those systems.Ready to shift your business’s workplace?
