The inaugural event, Women of Coast, launched on April 26 to honor six incredible women. Every day this week, Sam sits down with one of the Women of Coast honorees for a short interview highlighting their achievements and journeys.
Today's guest is MacArthur Fellowship Awardee, Elisabeth Turk.Turk has been described by art critics as “part artist, part scientist, part mathematician” for her astounding marble sculptures that defy gravity and make stone appear as delicate as lace. Critics might also add “part naturalist” to the list, because the wonder inherent in the physical world also underlays her other projects, including an intricate, ethereal work, the “Seashell Mandala Murals,” in which Turk has used X-rays and photography to reveal, as she says, “a central, natural architecture” in the shells.
She is the commissioned artist for Laguna Art Museum’s Art & Nature Festival 2018, part of the museum’s centennial celebration. For that Turk has been creating a multi-faceted work called “The Shoreline Project.”

Today's guest is Jennifer Friend, President and CEO of Project Hope Alliance. The nonprofit works to short-circuit the cycle that keeps people in a hopeless situation, with housing and education programs aimed at the more than 28,000 homeless children attending Orange County schools.Through much of her school years, she and her three brothers were among Anaheim’s “motel kids,” children who live in motels because their parents don’t have enough reliable income to secure permanent housing. Friend found stability in school and excelled, going on to attain her law degree from UC Irvine, eventually becoming partner at age 35 in a law firm as a high-powered litigator before taking the reins at Project Hope Alliance.

The inaugural event, Women of Coast, launched on April 26 to honor six incredible women.Every day this week, Sam sits down with one of the Women of Coast honorees for a short interview highlighting their achievements and work. Two hundred people attended the exclusive, sold-out luncheon held at Lido House Hotel in Newport Beach. The end of the event, however, started new opportunities for bridges to be built between people.
Today's guest is Kylie Schuyler. Kylie worked as a Wall Street trader, then earned advanced degrees in clinical psychology while she raised her five children. But an experience volunteering to build schools in Cambodia inspired her to create Global G.L.O.W., which stands for “Girls Leading Our World.” The organization aims to break the cycle of poverty by combining a literacy and arts curriculum with a mentorship program for girls from underserved communities in Orange County and internationally.
