The Bright Muse
The Bright Muse
Suzanne Barker
My name is Suzanne Barker and welcome to The Bright Muse where seemingly ordinary people share their extraordinary stories. Basically, if I find someone fascinating, I interview that outlier and share it right here. This podcast delivers inciting content while increasing listener empathy...and adds a splash of humor wherever possible.
Episode 6, Laid Off Life & First Generation
This episode is 2-fold...if you find yourself jobless in 2020 OR struggling with first gen identity, then this episode is for you.  First, the Laid-Off Life podcast offers empathy, knowledge, and resources from the moment one is laid-off to the acquiring of her next employment.  Second, who exactly is considered "first gen American" and what is like to have that label? This gets DEEP, y'all.  Thank you to these ladies for their hearts and perseverance and determination to help others along the way. https://www.facebook.com/LaidOffLife1/

Giving Fire and Knives to Juveniles
My interview from 2019 with Chad Houser, the founder and owner of Cafe Momentum - a restaurant in downtown Dallas that employs interns from a juvenile corrections program. He's pretty damn awesome. Times have been hard on so many eating establishments. Click on the link to check it out and donate.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLWZGIBJrHs&t=247s https://cafemomentum.org/

It Could Happen to You
Colleen Michaelis has experienced a mother's worst nightmare--the death of child. Tommy was/is (we believe he lives on in another way) a magnetic, fun, hard-working, athletic risk-taker. 2 years ago, he tragically passed away from an accidental overdose.  So many people love this family and have rallied around Colleen while she continues to speak out and educate in order to prevent this happening to other kids and their families.  She references this book. You can see our original YouTube interview from last year here.

Colleen Episode Trailer
Full episode coming 8/23, 7pm. She lost her son to the opioid crisis 2 years ago and has since been speaking out about this national crisis and ending the stigma attached to its victims and their families. She is also my kids P.E. teacher and they know all the Bon Jovi and MJ classics because of this woman, so I am eternally grateful.

Homeless Hero
Ray Rose/Santa Claus/Homeless Hero...all names this Dallas homeless celebrity responded to. Sadly, he passed the day before I first aired this episode on my YouTube channel, https://youtu.be/jq-7JJYmsfw, RIP. Hear how he went from a "normal life" to homeless to hero status to murder to jail to 300+ corporate big wigs getting him out of jail. This may challenge your preconceived ideas of the homeless...
