Former University of Michigan field hockey player Kragen Metz ended her career on the highest stage in college sports- the national championship game. After a canceled fall season in 2020, Kragen talks through the ups and downs her team experienced as they trained for a season they weren’t even sure would happen. But fate would allow the Wolverines to compete in spring 2021, where, against all odds, they managed to make it to the final game against UNC. While they did not end up winning the game, Kragen will forever remember these final moments on the field, and how special it was to end her career fighting for a national championship alongside her teammates.

During Kragen’s time at Michigan, the field hockey team won 3 regular season Big Ten titles and 2 Big Ten Championships. Before playing in the national championship as a senior, Kragen made one final four and two elite eight appearances in the block M. Kragen discusses the key factor to her team’s success- everyone knowing their roles. Very early on in her career, Kragen learned how to contribute as a supporting player. It was never about herself, but about what she could do to help her teammates. Kragen’s grit, humility, and self awareness have not only served her well in her athletic career, but continue to guide her in life after college athletics.
