Welcome back to Season 2 of Survivor Series Stories. In episode 4, we sat down with Shabaka Shakur. On January 11, 1988, 2 men were murdered in Brooklyn. Shabaka Shakur was brought in for questioning the next day. Although there were several loopholes in many of the witnesses stories, as well as alibis that could prove Shabaka did not commit these crimes, one crooked detective's story landed him in jail. On February 15, 1989, Shabaka was convicted of two counts of second degree murder. He was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison. After more than 25 years locked away, and much hard work and anguish, Shabaka's charges were dismissed in 2015. This story is a wild example of how JUST ONE crooked cop could be a detriment to the lives of so many innocent young Black men in America. Welcome back to Season 2 of Survivor Series Stories. In episode 3, we sit down with Cherry’s uncle, Rocco Cherry. Rocco was introduced to the game early in life, seeing hard drugs at the age of 14, and not much later, selling them. Growing up in Indiana it wasn’t hard to get your hands on work to move, but it was hard to stop once you got a taste of some profit. This is a story about a man who couldn’t get enough, and still sort of lives to that mentality today. A true OG, we bring to you, Rocco Cherry. Trapped in the System.

Welcome back to Season 2 of  Survivor Series Stories. In episode 2, we learn about the origin of Brandyn McGee, aka Cosi. Being born in Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. Growing up in London. Living in Chicago, DC, Baltimore, and of course Brooklyn, NY. He spoke about how hard it was to transition from London to Brooklyn. He was tired of standing out; in those days, that wasn’t the “cool” thing to do. So, he had to adapt and blend in with his environment in order to fit in. Brandyn was arrested at the age of 13 after being falsely accused of sexual misconduct. He spent 6 months in holding at the Oak Hill Youth Detention Center in Maryland while waiting for trial, where he was ultimately acquitted.Going through that as an innocent minor was traumatizing, and he describes those conditions as well—including how the entire ordeal has affected his relationships to this day. This episode is big for people listening that have similar struggles with identifying with themselves and being open about who they are. The Survivor Series is meant to showcase the human side of our friends, listeners, guests, and even ourselves particular to the theme of the given season. Each season we will focus on a subject matter. Our last season was centered around Cancer and the effects it’s had on the patients and loved ones that we’ve interviewed. We strongly encourage you checking those episodes out as well!This season of The Survivor Series is called “Wrongfully Convicted”. We sat down people that have been accused of a crime which, in the result of subsequent investigation, proved erroneous. We were not able to finish this season due to COVID-19, however after the year we’ve had to experience in 2020, we felt it only right to get these stories out to you guys and delay no further. In episode 1 of this season, we sat down with Tahoe Jenkins of the “So Shameless” and “Hard or Soft” podcasts. Tahoe tells stories of living the street life – growing up in the jungle while trying to earn a place in society. Working on Wall Street. Hustling. Drug dealing. Shoot outs for territory and respect. Police chases on motorcycles up and down Fulton and Nostrand Ave on the opposing sides of traffic. He recalls the living conditions for inmates on Rikers Island, and what his experience was during his time there. In Season 1 Episode 6 – the Season 1 finale of Survivor Series – we interviewed the creator herself, Lashondra Cherry, better know as Cherry Poppins. Cherry has been sharing her story with us for over a year now, since episode “Hunna”, but we haven’t heard it all. This time around, she goes deep. Tune in to learn the story of how she was diagnosed, the struggles she had with becoming comfortable with her voice again, and the journey she’s been on to help spread awareness by starting her blog “From Radio to Radiation”, and creating this very series itself. Cherry’s story is truly remarkable, and one that we hope will encourage and enlighten others.

In Season 1 Episode 5 of Survivor Series: The Cancer Chronicles, we spoke with Charles Jay, who was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 2 years old. In addition to being a survivor, Charles is also a stylist, fashion enthusiast, and owner/designer of the clothing line URBANE. During the interview, with the help of the stories his family has been sharing with him all of his life, he recalled what he could about being diagnosed, as well as the treatment process that he underwent. He also spoke about his clothing line, why he started it, and how he’s using it to tell his story. He even shared a cool story about meeting Swizz Beats. Being 25 years cancer free, Charles’ story exemplifies how hope, passion, and determination can be the recipe for success in any facet of life. In Season 1 Episode 4 of Survivor Series: The Cancer Chronicles, we sat down with Minerva Guerrero to discuss the story of how she survived cancer. Minerva was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. She talks about spending over a month a straight in the hospital, losing her hair and hating it at first, but then owning her look and feeling beautiful again. Minerva showed us that even some of the strongest of people can need crutches to lean on, and to live your life to fullest, as tomorrow isn’t always promised. Tune in to this great story, and enjoy.

In Season 1 Episode 3 of Survivor Series: The Cancer Chronicles, we spoke with Cleo Lebron from the recently discontinued podcast, The Danny and Cleo Show. Cleo was gracious and kind enough to share the story of her father, who recently had succumb to cancer. She stresses the importance of not taking your health lightly, and the significance of having a strong family and support system by your side. We felt extremely fortunate to be able to help celebrate the life of her dad, Tony Samad, and share his story with you all. We hope you share this and enjoy as well.

In Season 1 episode 2 of Survivor Series: The Cancer Chronicles, we sat down with a long time friend of Cherry, and new found friend of the show, Winteer Sancho-Joseph. Winter was diagnosed with Leukemia in January of 2013, when she was just 20 years old. She goes into detail about how she was diagnosed, having to get bone marrow transplants, getting rid of the cancer only for it to come BACK in her eye, and more. She dealt with all of that on top of being a young parent to a 5 year old son. Her story taught us what being a fighter looks like, and has motivated us to fight for the betterment of our health. Our goal with this series is to spread awareness, motivation, education, and hope. We hope that you can continue to learn from these stories as well. Enjoy.

Welcome to the first episode of our new derivative of The Officially Street Podcast, “Survivor Series”. That’s right, we’ve taken one of our original segments of #TOSPodcast and created something so much bigger! The Survivor Series segment is meant to showcase the human side of our friends, listeners, guests, and even ourselves. We tell stories of struggle, pain, comedy, near death experiences, etc., but we aren’t as consistent with it as we should be. So, since we’re DOPE ASS INTERVIEWERS, we decided to look at this segment from a new perspective, and interview people about their stories.This season of The Survivor Series is called “The Cancer Chronicles”. We sat down people that have either beat cancer, or been affected by loved ones having cancer. Them sharing their stories has opened our eyes to being more health conscious, it’s taught us ways to be more supportive of people in their time of need, it’s given us motivation, and shown us how to be fighters.In episode 1 of this season, we sat down with none other than Jonathan Mena of The Loud Speakers Network. He was diagnosed with Testicular Cancer almost 2 years ago. He walked us through how he found out about it, and the changes he made in his lifestyle after going through surgery and recovery. We learned from this episode to trust your body, not to wait until the last minute to see a doctor, (or put all of your faith in Web MD) and to cherish the time you spend with your loved ones.
