Ep 284 Experiencing Grief and Loss
Friends, I have news, my sweet Edie girl dog has passed.  This episode is an exploration of how I'm processing her passing and concepts that I use to make the grief and loss more bearable.  I also discuss that the pain from loss is not linear and we need to let go of timelines.  The most painful thing we can do is judge ourselves that 'we should be over' something when the grief pops through.  Thank you for listening week after week and getting to hear her snores, her collar shake and chime and even an occasional bark. She has been a part of this podcast for 6 straight years, there for me through all the changes, expansions, coaching calls with you and more.  She will be missed. Ep 283 Coaching Session with Client Rhiannon
My amazing client Rhiannon, generously offered to come on the podcast in exchange for a coaching session!  She posted in our Alive AF! private Facebook group about needing coaching around summertime and how to make her self a priority while her kids are home and they have a lot going on.  You MUST listen to this podcast immediately if summer time has you feeling like you can't possibly find time for yourself and your goals, you have any resentments towards family members, or you need a dose of inspiration.  This was the question that she posted in the group, tune in and hear the coaching I gave her:  '#coaching I have been wanting to post but have just been so overwhelmed and busy. School has been out for almost 3 weeks and that always throws me into a tailspin. That and the fact that I have been traveling solo with my kids 8 out of the last 14 days. All my choice of course but I find it hard to find time for myself when this happens. Same old song and dance about putting everyone else’s needs above my own.I was wanting to set a goal for myself for June that I would find time to just do the basics daily; journal, plan, read, listen to a workshop, drink my water and walk. With my kids out of school and being around me so much I have a hard time finding privacy and time to be alone to do these things and I have learned that I really need that. I have been getting up early and somedays it’s great but somedays they get up early too and I get annoyed by that bc I feel like that’s my only time to be alone. I realize I’m judging myself for that last fact. Edit to add that I do see an improvement from last year, I had already started back to very regular drinking by now from the same issue. So I am proud that part is sticking for me finally.'  I hope you enjoy this episode, and you take the coaching I gave Rhiannon and apply it to your own life! Ep 282 How to Protect Yourself From Over-drinking in the Future
Ep 282, How to Protect Yourself From Over-drinking in the FutureThis episode I discuss the importance of doing what you can to protect yourself from over-drinking in the future. You might be someone who has made great progress in stopping the over-drinking. Now, you might be lacking on 'doing the work' that you did in the beginning to get where you are now. This episode encourages you to invest in your self-care even when things are going well. Stress and taking on too many things takes a toll on our well-being and if you aren't investing into yourself you can feel on the edge and if this goes on too long it can lead you to over-drink. Over-drinking doesn't usually happen because of one event in one given day, it builds over time and this episode helps you understand how you can protect yourself from over-drinking in the future by taking care of yourself today. Tune in and hear a recent example of how I worked through this in my own life and choose to say no to something that was going to be too much of a stretch for me. Ep 280 Mental Health Awareness Month with Kim Jeffs
This is a special conversation I had with Kim Jeffs, Founder, Executive & Somatic Coach of Soma and Soul and Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counseling Supervisor. From Kim: ‘I'm licensed as a mental health counseling supervisor in the State of NC. Additionally, I'm a certified Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, focused on high-stress physiology. Over two decades, I've explored the connection between the mind and body, obtaining various certifications that enrich my practice. This continuous learning has allowed me to help individuals tap into their potential, both professionally and personally. Despite my professional journey, it's essential to remember that, like everyone, I am human. I understand life's challenges and the importance of connection. I believe that we navigate life more effectively when we're connected and supportive of one another. This philosophy drives me, ensuring that Soma & Soul isn't just a business but a place of genuine support and transformation.’ Kim and I dive into mental health and bring awareness in how to identify if you are struggling with mental health. She also discusses Somatics, which is our bodies, and how our bodies can let us know if we need help processing our feelings/emotions. We also discuss the symptom of over-doing anything that isn’t good for us like over-drinking, over-working, over-eating etc. We highlight the need to get mental health support and that everyone struggles at some point or even regularly in their lives. There is no shame in getting help and just because you think you ‘should be happy’ because of your life circumstances, doesn’t mean that you don’t deserve to find out why you aren’t feeling or living the way you want or think you could. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did and it helps you recognize if you need additional support. Ep 279 Assumptions
My husband and I went to NYC for the weekend and a theme emerged, ASSUMPTIONS. So many assumptions happened for both of us and one involving a complete stranger. Our mind likes to make assumptions to save us energy and time. An assumption is a thing that is accepted as true or as certain to happen, without proof. Tune in and hear 3 completely different stories on assumptions, from brunch to a phone charger to a stranger yelling at us in Central Park. What assumptions are you making about other people that are HURTING YOU? Like, 'they are excluding me.' What assumptions are you making about alcohol that isn't serving you? Like 'if I don't drink, it will be boring.' Assumptions can help you or hurt you. If you find out you were wrong for assuming something, can you learn from this, let it go, or laugh instead of getting angry or blaming your assumption on someone else? I'd love to hear what assumptions you make that you have found out aren't true. Ep 278 Mental Health Awareness Month and Alcohol Use
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being.  It affects how we think, feel, and act.  It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices.  Over-drinking is usually a sign that our mental health is in need of some help.  Over-drinking is a symptom. For a lot of my clients, it's a symptom of stress, high levels of anxiety, overwhelm, loneliness, grief, big painful life changes or traumatic events like a high conflict divorce or a major medical diagnoses.  Using alcohol as a way to cope is a sign that your mental health could use some support.  It's not something to be ashamed of or to keep a secret.  If you've been struggling with alcohol use and you identify as someone who is using alcohol as a way to cope (or another sign is, finding it very hard to stop automatic behavior and can't identify the cause of your over-drinking) it's time to get help.  Tune into this podcast episode and hear the intersections of mental health and over consumption of alcohol. Here's a resource I used in creating this episode:https://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/sites/default/files/2022-06/MHF-Alcohol-and-mental-health-guide.pdfAnother resource:SAMHSA’s National Helpline, 1-800-662-HELP (4357) (also known as the Treatment Referral Routing Service), or TTY: 1-800-487-4889 is a confidential, free, 24-hour-a-day, 365-day-a-year, information service, in English and Spanish, for individuals and family members facing mental and/or substance use disorders. This service provides referrals to local treatment facilities, support groups, and community-based organizations. In North Carolina:https://trosainc.org/finding-free-programs/MY LINKS: Retreat/coaching packages-https://www.angelamascenik.com/2024retreatsandcoachingJoin the Alive AF! waitlist-https://www.angelamascenik.com/aliveafApply to work with me privately-https://form.typeform.com/to/x8tcz6lm Tags: Stop Over-drinking, Angela Mascenik, stop drinking podcast, how to feel, how to overcome addiction, how to drink less wine, change your relationship with alcohol, coach for women who want to drink less alcohol, help to stop over-drinking, stop over-drinking, life coach to help stop over-drinking, self-love, importance of self-love, online membership to stop over-drinking, program to help quit alcohol, how to quit drinking, spouses, partners, food, overeating, moderation, sober retreat, how to prioritize yourself, make yourself a priority to drink less, mental health, mental health and alcohol use

Ep 277 My Goal for May: Allowing My Discomfort With Other People's Discomfort
What does this even mean? Have you ever noticed how uncomfortable you get when you perceive other people feeling some sort of discomfort or negative feelings? If you have noticed this and then tried to 'make everyone feel better' or 'try to diffuse' a situation so the peace gets kept or whatever it is, how does this work out for you? Does it exhaust you, make you feel anxious, overwhelmed, or edgy? And then what do you do? Drink, eat, scroll, avoid, fight...or cause a bigger issue than what actually existed? Well, I happen to have been aware of myself being really uncomfortable and tight and edgy and grippy when I perceive some else's discomfort in a whole bunch of situations. And that sucks because when I feel that way, I immediately want to 'make it better' for them and that feels graspy and honestly it's a big energy suck AND it doesn't work. DANG IT. So that's my work this month. And I invite you to come along with me and choose something that is a big discomfort for you. Is it urges for alcohol, snacking at night or something else? What do you have a big discomfort over? The key to being more comfortable in this area is to ALLOW the initial discomfort you feel right now.You have to be willing to go through it for it to feel better. That's the process. This episode dives into how to do that and I share a little bit of what I am working on as an example. Let's get uncomfortable together, friends!Join Say YES for Drinking Less:https://www.angelamascenik.com/say-yesHire me as your private coach: https://form.typeform.com/to/x8tcz6lmGrab one of the last two spots in the Seattle retreat. Ep 276 Do I Have a Problem?
This episode helps you discover if YOU have a problem with alcohol. Most people have an image in their minds about what someone with an alcohol problem looks like. And for most of my clients they don't match that description. Often people who want to cut back get pushback from their loved ones who don't understand why they are focusing on cutting back when 'they don't understand, you don't do anything bad, or nothing bad is happening from your drinking.' Sometimes these external messages confuse our desire to cut back or quit. You might then tell yourself, 'I work full-time, take care of the kids, take care of everything, surely I can have a couple glasses of wine at the end of the day!' And then you dismiss your own truth. This episode dives into this and helps you understand YOUR situation with alcohol better so you can remain clear on what you want and then can clearly communicate to others if you need to. If you are struggling and haven't been able to make the changes you want on your own, please get help. Ep 275 Navigating Skepticism: What to Do When Loved Ones Dismiss Your Desire to Cut Back
This episode dives into what to do when someone you care about shares that they don’t think you need to cut back or wishes you wouldn’t cut back or dismisses your desire to quit or cut back. Mostly, when people dismiss your desire to cut back it’s just because they don’t want to cut back. They don’t want anything to change. So when you say you are going to do something differently, it often will make them look at their own habits around alcohol. And they might unconsciously feel a bit threatened about their own attachment to alcohol. What really matters is that YOU acknowledge you want to cut back and that you do something about it. And that it’s not black and white. Just because you don’t present like a down and out alcoholic doesn’t mean that your alcohol consumption isn’t a concern to you.  If you think you drink too much and it’s been hard to cut back, it needs to be addressed.  Don’t let someone else’s opinion deter your desire to cut back. You know if it’s too much and that is what matters.
