The story of Sir John Hotham 'the traitor at the gate' is well told in the city of Hull and being a local I have heard it many times before. However, there is a whole year between Hotham refusing the King entry to the city and his capture and it turns out this is the most interesting part of the story. I don't understand why all the best bits have been discarded over the years.....so I aim to change that. This is a story of plot, intrigue, spying and double crossing that will follow John Hotham and the residents of Beverley as we discover the events surrounding the start of The English Civil War. As Robert the Bruce wrestles the Scottish Kingdom back from the English,  it would be the north of England that would take the brunt of the long  conflict. This tale takes you to Yorkshire, where a small town,  preparing for the arrival of a rampant Scottish army relied on a  peculiar and untested method of  defence. This is a complete overhaul of an earlier story, I am hoping to tell this tale from the locations in the story for my you tube channel, head on over for that and more.

It still surprises me after writing it that such a roller coaster tale takes place in a period spanning less than 40 years. I hope you enjoy. Just a little snippet from my next big story and I've thrown in the life of John Fisher as a cheeky bonus too....now I will get back to writing it. It is rather good even if I do say so myself. UPDATE this is taking much longer to write as I have found so much out that it is taking quite a while to formulate it in to a coherent and tight narrative but it will be worth it I promise 😃

Aldfrith is a Northumbrian King rarely mentioned, rarely written about and often confused with others.  Despite this I have researched his life and I firmly believe he is far more important and influential than the records show. After a period of military powerhouses like Edwin, Oswald and Oswiu dominating the Anglo_Saxon Heptarchy, the scene was set for a Northumbrian Golden Age in religion and learning. Cometh the hour, cometh the man. So how does an unknown like Aldfrith fit in to it all? Within a month or two (hopefully sooner) of this release I will have taken my camera out to the locations mentioned in the story and will upload the video to my you tube channel. This a story showing one of the many events that took place during the long and arduous task of forging the Kingdom of England, which was by no means an obvious conclusion at times. Something new for a well trodden tale. I have found this incredible story whilst digging around my local archives. In the midst of his oppressive slaughter and destruction of Northumbria, William hears of slain knights who had crossed paths with a monster in the Church of St John, Beverley.....or so the scared survivors say. This is the tale of how one place gained a reprieve from the massacre that was the harrying of the north.
