Deep in the wooded hills of Randolph County, North Carolina, lies Purgatory Mountain, a place whose troubled history and unsettling folklore stretch back generations. Today, much of the mountain is home to the North Carolina Zoo, but according to an old local legend, its forests are haunted by the restless spirit of a ruthless Confederate bounty hunter whose cruelty terrorized the surrounding countryside during the Civil War. Known simply as the Hunter, this mysterious figure is said to wander among the trees, his eyes glowing with an unnatural light as he searches for those who escaped his grasp more than a century and a half ago. For generations, the story of the Hunter has been passed down among local families, but what makes this haunting tale particularly intriguing is the possibility that it may have originated with a real act of violence during the final years of the Civil War.This episode is made possible through the support of our sponsor: Thanks to Article for sponsoring this podcast!
