Southern Gothic
One of my favorite podcasts. I love all the different stories from the South as I am a Southern myself and I have learned a lot about the folklore of the South. Brandon has a great presentation of the material he covers and the perfect voice for a podcast . Keep up the great work!

Great to get away from the world
I’d call this the best escapism podcast out there. Politics in the modern sense is never brought up, just historic context and fun stories. We lived close to the Gaines Tavern in KY for a decade and I have to say that episode was spot on and was so much fun to listen to! Easily my top 3 favorite podcasts! Keep it up!

Carpet baggers
Heard an ad for this show. They mispronounced Appalachia. They list Carolina as the northern edge of the South, then go on to talk about Virginia. The music is generic Western slop.
About as southern as JD Vance, using stereotypes and summaries of others wok to make a buck.

Love this Pod. Especially the older mysteries ., I set the mood and listen. Candlelight, cider , kick back, relax and let your voice take me back to a time my ancestors lived. I have my own mystery (1908 ish) My Grandmothers brother was supposedly dismembered, burned ,parts thrown into a well. Two other murders followed.
, the murdered turned out to be my Great Uncles cousin. All in the Western North Carolina.

Love the pod, but regret supporting
They say you should never meet your heroes; I say you should never support your favorite pods on Patreon…
I supported SoGo for a year on Apple Pods then dove into a year (annual payment) on Patreon.
All the “feel good” stuff for supporters that was promoted was not, in fact, what was delivered.
Is this all about money? No, it’s definitely not, but as a full-time student, I do kind of hope that the creators I support are being truthful about their appreciation for their supporters.
This has just been a disappointing experience.
If the promise was “send us your money and we’ll never acknowledge that we’re here because of your support,” I would have likely still supported them because I’ve always appreciated the content and honesty goes a long way…but there were promises…then nothing.
It’s just been a learning experience. Great content. Horrible experience supporting a creator I believed in.

Perfect mix of history and lore!
This podcast explores those southern stories of ghosts, hauntings, and the supernatural. The stories are interesting, but things aren’t just taken at face value. Research into the facts behind the tales is presented, and when there’s a lack of evidence, this is presented as well. A great exploration of myths and historical events.

It just keeps getting better!
I can't believe I haven't rated and reviewed this show before. My sincerest apologies for that. I think I originally found it via The Ghost Story Guys and I've been listening for a couple years now. It's one of my favorites!
I was just stopping in to add extra praise for the Nottaway Plantation episode. Brandon, you and anyone else who worked on this episode did a fantastic job. You took a complex and fraught topic and presented it in a way that was sensitive and engaging while giving the true history its due, lifting up the enslaved people whose story has been suppressed for far too long. And you compassionately held accountable those who oppressed them, murdered them, erased them, and knowingly profited from their pain. You did all of that with top notch writing, artful performance, and a captivating soundscape. You are a consummate professional and a gem of a human. Keep up the great work and I'll keep listening to everything you do. I'll also vote for any awards you may be eligible for so let us know when it's time!

Excellent podcast
Thank you so much for your recent episode on plantation history. Having grown up in the south, I didn’t see a plantation tour that discussed slavery until I was in my 50s. Interesting to hear what was behind that. An episode on the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery Alabama would be welcomed.

Great content but….
I love the content of this podcast. It’s right up my alley. However, I find it hard to listen to because the narrator pauses his speech in awkward places, often mid sentence. It’s very distracting and annoying.

I love this podcast, please don’t ever stop recording it ❤️

Love this podcast!
I heard about this podcast on the Ghost Story Guys. I live in South Carolina. Absolutely love to hear about the gothic and haunted lore from the south. The podcast is very well detailed and narrated. That’s important to me. I’ve been listening to it for a little while here. Today I listened to “The most hated woman in Virginia.” So far my favorite. I’m trying to get caught up on all of them. Great work! Absolutely recommend this podcast!

Recommended from another podcaster
I’ve been looking for another paranormal podcast to listen to. This was highly recommended by Darren Marlar of Weird Darkness. He posted an episode on his channel a couple days ago of fear daily and I was instantly addicted. Started my journey through the library of episodes. Great podcast!!

An old story, well told.
I loved the story of Robert Johnson.

Unexamined Misogyny
The first episode I listened to was the “Headless Woman” episode, and I’m hesitant to continue… (SPOILER!) it’s a story about a woman murdered by her husband in a jealous rage because she was getting ugly and old…?! and she was aging prematurely because she pridefully didn’t want help cleaning the house… (she needed the distraction!!) and he found her in the attic writing letters to her ex-love… like what kind of narrative is this pushing! None of this woman’s actions make sense, it seems like it’s told with sympathy to the murderer. Listened to another story where the villain was a 16 year old orphan girl, who wickedly tempted a poor innocent twenty something man…
The host needs to really think about what morals he is putting out into the world by repeating old stories like these without any analysis or reflection on social contexts. It’s the difference between propagating the status quo and keeping things the same vs. trying to make the world a less painful place for marginalized people.

love it!! 💘
just when i thought i couldn’t enjoy this podcast more… im listening and hear their ad break to sponsor a non-profit organization that the narrator’s family supports. not only is the cause wonderful, but someone using their platform to encourage others to help those in need really struck me. as a podcast lover and animal rights advocate, and volunteer at my local animal shelter - this was amazing to hear. keep doing the good work, i love it! southern states struggle the most in the US, where shelter-capacity and euthanasia rates are the highest. every little bit helps ❣️ very inspiring! thank you!! pls adopt don’t shop people, for every dog u buy from a breeder = a dog euthanized in shelter. u can help by supporting your local animals shelters!!

enjoy the show buy
I enjoy the show, the issue I have iis with the subsciber episodes. I have no problem with the idea or that it is done. My issue is with the fact I cannot filter them out of my feed. I listen to podcast on my comute and trying to do things on my phone while I am driving is not good.

Great show!
My family is from the south and I love this podcast. And for everyone complaining about adds… go pay some money and go add free. Why y’all so entitled you can’t appreciate a FREE awesome show without complaining about adds???? If you’re still complaining…welp, BLESS YOUR HEART ❤️

Love this podcast!
One of my favorites! Everyone criticizing the “lisp” has perhaps not considered the fact that a microphone is being used to record this I guess?? And as far as ads go, you can literally just skip them. They have to make money to continue providing the podcast somehow. I love the story telling and Brandon is an excellent host. Very knowledgeable and great at telling these stories!
KaylaBerry09
Nope. Not this.
Too many ads and awkward writing, editing, presentation.
This is the podcast equivalent of triple spacing a book report to pad the page count. Host seems like a nice guy, but it's not enough to counter the cringey, half-baked, overwrought subject matter.
MaughamsBoy
It’s an ad network
It started out fairly good, but by 2022 ads took over more and more of the podcast. Over 5 mins of ads in the beginning, short intro, more ads, and on and on. At some point it just wasn’t worth it.
The Real Zen Boy
Too many ads
Too many ads.

You’ve gotta listen to this podcast y’all…
Southern Gothic is a well-produced, objective exploration of the interplay between “local lore” and historical narratives. From the recurring melodies to the high interest subject matter, every episode has something unique to offer. Bryanne and Brandon’s enthusiasm for the genre as well as the attention to detail in their research is both infectious and authentic. This is a must listen podcast!

Stories I haven’t heard
No useless chatter- straight to the story-I love how he includes history- thumbs up

Interesting!
Really love the historical knowledge. Sometimes feels one-sided but not too often. I do wish the host would pronounce “subsequent” correctly for once. The mispronunciations kill it for me at times. But all-in-all an entertaining podcast.
Pheiress
I really like the topics
It’s so well done. I just wish the host could work on his lisp of s to sh. I get so distracted. My sister had speech lessons and I feel like I wish I could run pronunciations with him. No shade.

Best haunted history podcast and host
I love this podcast! The dulcet tones of the host’s voice soothe me to sleep where I can dream about ghosts, murder, and all things spooky about the south.

Good stories!
Love the stories but hate the long silent pauses. I end up thinking there’s been a malfunction but just in time, the story resumes.

So glad I heard your interview on Sinisterhood! Been listening to several of your episodes a day! So entertaining and informative.
PoesyGirl
Trying to like it, but…
While the content is interesting, the delivery could use some work. Tighten up the pace a bit. Be careful of your pronunciation. It is definitely funky in terms of basic vocabulary. Also, anything starting with “str” is not pronounced “shhtr”. Example: “straight”, not “shtraight”. This might sound picky, but if you’re going to be podcaster, this stuff is important for your credibility. And lastly, even though you are reading a script, put some enthusiasm into it. Add some feeling!

Subscriber Getting Screwed
I paid extra to become a subscriber to get subscriber only content but mostly to get ad-free episodes. Nope! Brandon and Bree still making us listen to the obnoxious ads like the nasally loon-lady poffering her aristocracy history. Don’t become a subscriber for they lie.
CaughtByGrace
Excellent show. Atrocious editing in the most recent upload.
This podcast is excellent but the most recent Franklin Masonic Hall episode is so garbled in the last 10 minutes of the episode, it’s unlistenable which is a shame since that’s where the ghost story portion of the episode was located. I don’t understand how this episode got released in the state it’s in.
