Outside Inside Out
Outside Inside Out
Rain Weigel/Jacob Kollar
Exploring deconstruction through story. We are two people that have always felt like Outsiders even when we were working on the inside of arts, the church and corporate America. Our 1st series explores the connection between the Church and alcohol. Did you know that nearly every kind of alcohol we drink was either created or heavily influenced by the Church? We even found modern examples of how people of faith have started to re-embrace the production of alcohol. How these people, knowingly or unknowing, have mirrored the methods and motivations of monks and nuns of 500 years ago.
C*vid Debrief- Best laid plans
Rain and Jacob travelled a lot during the pandemic. In those travels they noticed that nationalistic stereotypes and cultural identities played a large roll in how you either accepted or pushed back against lockdown rules. Also they discuss Michael Lewis book The Premonition. In that book Lewis finds that America had a Pandemic plan but failed to follow it. What is more, a lot of other countries used America's plan to good success.  See Michael Lewis podcast Against the Rules at Pushkin.  https://www.pushkin.fm/podcasts/against-the-rules/the-person-who-knows

"This" "And"
In the final episode of the series Jacob and Rain talk about their upbringing in the Evangelical church. They remember some of the laughable sermons that tried to explain away alcohol in the Bible.  They also discuss how our society as a whole does not do well with ambiguity or differences. They talk about how modern veins in the church are embracing beer and wine but are also fully aware of its distructive nature in some people's lives.

Drunk monks and cavalcade of Saints
Rain and Jacob take a hard look at the genesis of modern brewing, the medieval ages, monk nuns, and the Abbey system. They find that the church was dealing with the same issues we deal with today.  That is the fragmentation of the community, the lack of basic necessities, and poor health. What they were not expecting was to find that the monks and nuns took this opportunity to explore their creativity and art.

How did we get here?
Rain and Jacob started making a documentary film about the church's influence on the production of alcohol.  They found a church in London and a Christian cloister in Amsterdam that started to brew beer to help meet the needs of their community. They discuss how Christians, or the church, have been antagonistic to drinking and how it got there.  https://www.stmarysprimrosehill.com/welcome https://brouwerijkleiburg.nl/
