What does it look like to continue to grow and learn, even in your 80s? In this episode, we’re closing out the “Seasons of Formation” series with our mentors Dick and Sybil Towner. The Towners share their faith journeys and vocational shifts–including Dick entering vocational ministry at 40, moving to Willow Creek in their mid-50s, and later taking over a failing retreat center in southern Indiana. They discuss rejecting “dropping out” retirement, leaning into gratitude amid physical diminishments, and focusing more on being present than producing. Influenced by Rolheiser’s Sacred Fire, they describe “giving your death away,” becoming true elders, and pursuing integrity through grieving, forgiving, and blessing, with Dick also sharing “Truths and Practices” he wrote for his family.CLICK HERE for your free resource on life stage questions.CLICK HERE for Dick’s 80th Birthday “Truths and Practices” resource.CLICK HERE to learn more about a personal download or subscription to oneLife Maps.00:00 Welcome and Series Setup00:46 Meet Dick and Sibyl01:54 Retreat Center Mission04:23 Early Faith Journeys06:38 Calling Into Ministry09:54 Family and Generations11:01 Move to Chicago Willow13:51 Inner Journey and Mentoring18:41 Midlife Challenges22:22 Rethinking Retirement25:03 Sacred Fire Story30:17 Giving Death Away32:00 Leap To The Springs33:53 One Way Ticket Faith36:29 Elderhood And Gratitude38:40 Letting Go To Lead46:13 Truths For Family53:29 Integration And Forgiveness55:21 Series Closing ThanksOther Resources:The Secret to Aging Well, with John and Nancy OrtbergLIFE MAPPING TOOLSGain clarity at life’s transitions and know yourself and God better through our visual life maps. S6, Ep. 09 Seasons of Formation: Lindsay's Story of Finding God in the Joys and Sorrows of Real Life
How do we embrace God’s invitation to come out of hiding and embrace the reality of our life? In this episode, Lindsay is sharing her spiritual formation journey and what God is inviting her into in her current life season. Lindsay, 43, is married to Tyler, a lead pastor, and they have 11-year-old adopted twin daughters. She also serves as Spiritual Formation Director at The REALIFE Process and recently completed spiritual direction training through Sustainable Faith. She shares how growing up in church as a “good girl” led to shame, hiding, and believing she had to have her act together, until a ministry training and seminary experience in Chicago invited her into deeper inner work and healing through a safe community. In adulthood, infertility, adoption, and motherhood became key places of surrender and receiving God’s grace. She also shares her current spiritual practices and rhythms for connection with God in her unique life season.CLICK HERE for your free resource on life stage questions.CLICK HERE to learn more about a personal download or subscription to oneLife Maps.00:00 Welcome and Series Setup01:41 Lindsay’s Current Season04:11 Early Faith and Shame06:40 Ministry Training Breakthrough10:23 Infertility and Adoption Journey15:04 Community and Safe People19:58 Marriage vs Deep Friendships24:24 Integration and Daily Practices29:46 Body Rhythms and Nature34:35 Resources and ClosingLIFE MAPPING TOOLSGain clarity at life’s transitions and know yourself and God better through our visual life maps. What does it look like to slow down and give space for both grief and creativity? In this episode, Teresa is sharing her story as we continue our series on seasons of formation. Teresa reflects on her faith journey and transitions from childhood to being exposed to more diverse backgrounds in college, and how ongoing experiences of grief, loss, and lament became a long-term theme in her formation. Teresa also traces a parallel theme of creative expression—music, worship ministry, entrepreneurship, and writing—now shaped by practices of slowing, deep rest, and “release,” including camping rhythms and her weekly “Rest Notes” writing commitment. She challenges those in their 60s and beyond to keep giving back as mentors and spiritual leaders.CLICK HERE for your free resource on life stage questions.CLICK HERE to learn more about a personal download or subscription to oneLife Maps.00:00 Welcome and Series Setup01:47 Teresa Today at 6505:17 Early Faith and Church Camp08:14 Infertility and Loss Theme09:00 What Grief Taught Me11:49 Creativity as Formation16:25 Rest and Slowing Down19:00 Creating With God25:14 Capturing Seasons in Writing30:10 You Are Not Done Yet32:05 Wrap Up and ResourcesLIFE MAPPING TOOLSGain clarity at life’s transitions and know yourself and God better through our visual life maps. What might God form in us when we walk in seasons we would not have chosen? In this episode, we continue our series on seasons of formation by talking with Lori Shoults, a spiritual director in her late 50s with three adult children and growing grandchildren. Lori shares how her early faith was traditional and knowledge-based, but a significant question from posed to her in her early 40s opened a new inward journey of vulnerability, self-knowledge, and experiencing God’s love. She describes how the Ignatian Exercises and the Paschal mystery shape her current formation, especially through a recent breast cancer diagnosis that required deep consent and trust. We discuss practices that sustain her now, and what God is forming in her through all of life's ups and downs. In this special REALIFE Practice podcast episode, we’ll walk through how to engage with your life story as part of our seasons of formation series, so you can gain insight and experience transformation in your life now. We’ll talk about our tool of oneLife Maps—especially the “My Life Story” map—and invite you to create a timeline of significant events, people, places, dreams, and losses, then go deeper by naming emotions, celebrations, what was lost, and where you notice God’s activity. We’ll explore how to identify repeated threads and core struggles, notice moments that still stir emotion as an invitation to revisit them with God, and title the “chapters” of your life to see bigger themes. We’ll also talk about practical next steps to help you engage with your own life story for yourself, and with others.CLICK HERE for your free resource on life stage questions.CLICK HERE to learn more about a personal download or subscription to oneLife Maps.00:00 Welcome and Series Context00:49 Start Your Life Story Timeline02:09 Go Deeper Than Facts03:06 Spot Threads and Core Struggles04:33 Revisit Stirring Moments05:25 Name Life Stage Chapters07:00 Practices to Explore Your Story09:18 oneLife Maps and Resources10:57 Closing and Next StepsLIFE MAPPING TOOLSGain clarity at life’s transitions and know yourself and God better through our visual life maps. How does faith and spiritual practice transition in later decades of life? In this episode, we welcome Mark Ross, a REALIFE Process® Certified Coach as he explores life with God as he approaches his 70s. He shares his story of coming to faith as a teenager through Young Life, experiencing renewed growth in his late 20s through Bible-centered church teaching, and discovering his gift of encouragement expressed through teaching. He reflects on thriving in chaos by bringing order and seeing discomfort as an invitation to growth. Mark describes his major pivot at 59 from a 30-year career in public park development into coaching and art, learning to trust God in the “land in between,” and expanding spiritual practices beyond compartmentalized quiet times. He also recounts years of caregiving for aging parents and an unexpected season of supporting his wife after an ankle break, emphasizing community, discernment, gratitude, and growing deeper into what matters most as he approaches his 70s.CLICK HERE for your free resource on life stage questions.Connect with Mark at www.nextthinggroup.com.00:00 Welcome and Series Intro01:06 Meet Mark Ross01:58 Career Pivot to Coaching05:03 Faith in 20s and 30s08:18 Gift of Encouragement11:13 Thriving in Chaos14:53 Retirement as Spiritual Journey16:59 New Spiritual Practices22:03 Caregiving and Community29:51 Aging with Open Hands31:15 Closing Reflections32:30 Resources and FarewellLIFE MAPPING TOOLSGain clarity at life’s transitions and know yourself and God better through our visual life maps.
