Her answer to Maggie's question of, "If you could read any book again for the first time, what book would you choose?" was Einstein's Dreams by Alan Lightman, exploring concepts of time and imagining many different possible worlds - I have already bought my copy! Mahdiyyah first applied to medicine during 6th form, but at that time studied for a BSc in Neuroscience at Queen Mary University of London, where she received a prize for the highest grade in her cohort for two consecutive years. Mahdiyyah applied for medicine again during her final year, completing all three entrance exams, and securing a place at KCL on their undergraduate course where she is now in her final year. We chat about being grounded in yourself and your own achievements when often being reduced to a number in a system, creativity in medicine and the challenge of maintaining balance when having a lot of interests and passions! 🧑‍🏫 Mature Medic Platform Spotlights: Season 3, Episode 1 🧑‍🏫 We are kicking off our new season with the wonderful Maggie! Maggie first applied to medicine while studying for the IB in Poland and got to interview stage, but her path took her to a BSc in Biomedicine at Lancaster University, before going on to study an MSc in Stratified Medicine and Pharmacological Innovation at Glasgow University. After graduating she started work as a medical writer while working on competitive UCAT scores to apply to medicine again. Three years of improving UCAT scores and two interviews later, Maggie is now in her second year of undergraduate medicine at Glasgow University continuing to work as a Senior Medical Writer! We chat about all paths having their own advantages, the trade-off of working so hard to gain a place to study medicine but having to work to maintain that place and the feeling of not making the most of the opportunities, and all about her debut novel that will be available to read soon! 🧑‍🏫 Mature Medic Spotlights: Season 2, Episode 5 🧑‍🏫 Our next episode is with Dr Lauren-Jane!   Lauren went into higher education from the unusual background of no A-levels, after working for a little while she took an access course with teaching in mind and found a love for learning and education. From there she completed a degree in theology before a range of experiences, including volunteering for the Red Cross, inspired her to study medicine. She started on the Nottingham GEM course as a single mum and is now a core surgical trainee and mum of 2!   We chat about finding a love for studying and getting the education bug, being self-reflective in your study method and being open to change when it's not working and her path to surgery. 🎉 Welcome to the second season of Mature Medic Spotlights! 🎉 Starting off the new season we have the wonderful Dana!    Dana has a background in political science and political theory, completing a BSc and MSc in the field. She then went on to achieve her PhD in bioethics at Princeton University and continued on at Princeton as a lecturer. Before starting medicine Dana went back to college to obtain the right A-levels and worked as an HCA in a mental health unit.   Before her impressive academic achievements, Dana started her professional life as a ballet dancer! Our last spotlight of the season is with Evie! A second-year medical student at Brighton and Sussex Medical School.   Evie completed a BSc in Biomedical Sciences and had an amazing experience as an intern for The Brighton and Hove Food Partnership not-for-profit, even deferring her medicine place a year to work there longer before starting medicine!   We talk about intersecting inequalities and bringing knowledge of the challenges some people face into being a medical student.
