Two stories yesterday of workers vs. billionaires. One of them played out on Capitol Hill, and the other on baseball diamonds far from the cathedrals of the Major Leagues. Former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz lied, denied and weaseled his way through his testimony before the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee on Capitol Hill. Later, it was announced that Minor League baseball players–among the lowest paid workers in the country–paid as little as $7 per hour by billionaire owners– have reached a first union contract that will more than double the pay of all players.
Baristas and baseball players: an unlikely pair in any other context, but this one.
