Big news on the labor front this past week, as reported by Politico: Michigan on Friday became the first state in more than half a century to repeal a right-to-work law.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed legislation passed by the Democratic-controlled Legislature, overturning a 2012 GOP law that allowed workers to choose not to join unions or pay union dues as a condition of employment, even if the union represents them in negotiations.
That last part is the kicker. You work in a unionized workplace, you’re not in competition with your colleagues. You’re not on a pedestal. You can’t bargain your own contract. You’re subject to the contract the union negotiates on your behalf. Don’t like it? Talk to the negotiating committee and suggest changes. Get involved. Or, just give up your benefits.
