Finally found a pod revisiting religious trauma that can come from a high control, high demand fundamentalist White Christian childhood. I too thought the “secular world” would be far better organized. 😂 Thank you for making a safe space to unpack Purity Culture, anti-LGBT “love of Jesus,” and the rest of the mess that comes with being a queer girl in a strict heterosexual, gender complementarianism environment. Wow! Just listened to the podcast with Eddie Kristan.

I was raised without religion, so I really appreciate the hosts continually unpacking what things mean. I am slightly less ignorant having listened to this podcast.

If podcasts had been around when I was a kid, my homeschooling mother would have banned me from listening to this one. But really, finding this podcast changed my life. Hearing from other queer folks who escapes the world of homeschooling and right-wing cults has given me new context with which to unpack my trauma. Thanks y’all

Been listening for awhile now-maybe 2 years-and have yet to find the words to write a review because this podcast hits so close to home for me as as a former fundy evangelical homeschool kid. Kieryn and Eve, I wish I could tell you all the ways your discussions and stories have supported, challenged, and awakened me as I’ve been both pulling apart and piecing together my upbringing. I appreciate how you’ve repurposed all the mental and emotional weapons as well as the advocacy training they used against us to point out the endless abuse of the many kitchen table cults, climb out, and create our own lives.

You both are awesome! Keep up the good work. As a person whose siblings were homeschooled we need more podcasts like this!

This podcast would have more legitimacy if there weren’t cattiness and personal attacks of religion in general. Obviously its a podcast of countering the “far right” and religion, but you could do that respectfully. So really, the hosts are just linked into the same category of the “bigoted” groups they’re trying to resist because of their personal attacks and clique-ness of cruel jokes. Also, their interviews have lulls in them, as in the hosts don’t know what to say to the guest at times. There is dead silence at times. Maybe I’m just used to more sophisticated podcasts where the hosts come prepared. So if you want to join a high school clique where you cruelly talk about things or people you don’t like, follow along!

I had hoped that this would be more informative, but it’s just two people blathering and not really delving into the topic. More time was spent on their personal issues and gripes than the subject of the podcast.

“Oh, I’m in the market for a new former-Christian podcast, I should check this one out.” “Oh, they just spent the first 15 minutes of the episode making halfhearted excuses for their guest using an anti-trans slur, never mind.” There are better options out there.

pros: - eve and kieryn are both fascinating hosts, and knowing what goes in inside the Christian rightwing fundamentalist echo chamber, and talking and debunking some modern myths started by these cults. - kieryn and eve are both INCREDIBLY charming and witty, and have chemistry that day time talk show hosts WISHED they had. cons: - the audio can be a little rough, esp the first few episodes. - the podcast can be really rambling and unfocused. at times, going on unrelated tangents best suited for patreon bonuses, twitter threads, blog posts, or could just overall be summarized up in a cleaner way. > the souring part of this whole show for me. - A LARGE MAJORITY of season one and the first 12 episodes of season 2 are locked behind a paywall, which, come to about 10 months of paywalled content shut behind a patreon shaped lock, preventing people who may be looking into this from getting large parts of the stories. obviously, kieryn and eve are allowed to dictate which things are free and paywalled, and they do deserve to get paid for their work, its hard to recommend this podcast, especially with paygated content that takes away ~10 months worth of context and information, and stuffs it into a place that people who may not have access to credit cards / bank accts / or who are minors can not access the show or its information. overall: - would i recommend this? Yeah, bit only if you’re okay with incomplete pictures. while the show is a decently heavy topic matter, i will admit its nice to glean some information about this world, that frankly, is hiding in horrifyingly plain sight.

This has been a fascinating exploration into extremist Christian rhetoric. Not caught up to the present episodes yet, but I’m learning a lot. In future episodes, I’d like to see some more balance between voices, especially with guests. But otherwise, I’m find this helpful!

This podcast has been so helpful for my journey in recovering from my fundamentalist and homeschooling background. The hosts know what they are talking about from experience and have done the work to name the harmful ideologies with which they were indoctrinated. I wish all my former fundamentalist/homeschool alum friends could listen to this podcast - I think it is an important step toward healing.

I’m a new listener. The subject matter is fascinating and right up my alley, but I think the pauses/casual remarks where they are waiting for things to load, etc could be edited out. And Eve does talk over Kieryn quite a bit as other reviewers have mentioned.

This is an awesome podcast covering some very important topics. It will often describe very emotional and traumatic experiences, so be prepared for that. Can also be trying at times to listen to because—especially in the more recent episodes—literally every third word the hosts say is “like.”

First of all, the audio quality is rough. More importantly though, these people obviously grew up in extremely dysfunctional families and may have some interesting stories, BUT, it doesn’t sound like there is much to be learned here about any movement as a whole (whether it be extreme Christianity, cults, extreme politics). Both admit that their families were not really accepted into the religious organizations that they were attracted to, that they didn’t follow the customs very closely, and that they were pretty new to religion in general. So it sounds like they had f’d up parents that were seeking extremism. These hosts are certainly not a viable information source about political conspiracies and truly don’t seem very knowledgeable about any of the subject matter advertised.

This is a fascinating look into the experiences and perspectives of people who grew up in a very controlled and conservative Christian homeschooled environment. Hosts are honest, well spoken, and a very enjoyable listen. Keep up the good work!

Happy to be hearing season two of Kitchen Table Cult! Such an informative and emotionally compelling take on fundamentalist Christian America. That said, I’m starting to get frustrated with Eve’s tendency to talk over and interrupt Kieryn and their guests. Narrative balance, y’all!

Always thoughtful, always on point. Points out the harm religion can cause while at the same time being sympathetic to those still trapped inside.
