In our continuing series about the role of nutrients and our immunity we would be amiss if we didn’t discuss the effects of excess stress on your immune system. In this, one of the worse colds and flu seasons in many years, it’s a good idea to consider the potential of excess stress during this time of year. Excess stress can make practically anything or any condition regarding your health much worse. The effects of stress hormones are far reaching and can negatively affect not only the central nervous system but virtually all other hormones and their relationships. For this reason, it is essential to take whatever steps are necessary and will work for you to better manage excess stress. Whether it be meditation, prayer, or visualization, it’s unimportant what you call it but it’s very important that you practice it. In addition to these spiritual and philosophical procedures we must also consider the role that key nutrients can play in not only helping to manage stress but more importantly to lower the potential side effects there from. When we discuss stress nutrients the very first that come to mind are the B complex vitamins, especially vitamin B12 and pantothenic acid. While these vitamins are essential to ingest in relatively high doses for those under significant stress, there are other nutrients and especially herbal extracts that can also help. These might include valerian and melatonin. A high potency multifaceted stress support formula would include these and other factors as well. During this particularly stressful holiday season it would be wise to consider the use of stress supportive nutrients not only for your overall health but to potentially enhance the enjoyment of the season as well.
