Collagen Protein is back in vogue or popularity once again. There are dozens and dozens of collagen supplements, pills, capsules, and powders for skin available on the market. This is an attempt for people to try to maintain their youthful appearance and retard premature aging.

Unfortunately, ingesting collagen protein orally is of little value. When collagen protein is ingested the stomach breaks this protein down into individual amino acids just as it does with any other source of protein, making the whole collagen unavailable. Procedures such as collagen injections and implants would likely provide more benefit but even these are not permanent as the body will break down this protein over time and the procedures will have to be repeated over and over.

One of the best ways to maintain adequate collagen within the body is to provide the raw materials that the body needs for manufacture of collagen internally. This means consuming a diet of high-quality proteins that provide all of the essential amino acids necessary for thousands of bodily functions, including the manufacture and maintenance of collagen protein structures. In addition to quality bio available protein the body needs several nutrients in the manufacture of various protein structures including collagen. These include the B complex and several minerals. So, in addition to ensuring adequate protein intake we must also provide the body with the 100+ nutrients that it needs every day in order to build these protein structures. Another factor to consider is digestion as we age our digestion often decreases, resulting in gas bloating, heartburn, and even acid reflux. When this occurs, digestion is often impaired and the breakdown of proteins into the individual amino acids is greatly retarded. If this occurs, it can result in inadequate amino acid availability and building protein structures such as collagen would be greatly hampered.
