Greg Caplan, co-founder and CEO of Spot Meetings, had what he calls “a predictable suburban upbringing” in the Chicago suburbs. Except that throughout his childhood, people from all over the world lived with him and his family.
In 2014, the hankering to explore for himself got the best of him. He asked his friends if they wanted to join his adventure, but they all turned him down. So Greg turned to the internet.
He made a website — which eventually became concierge-service Remote Year — asking if anyone wanted to travel while working remotely. The first day, 5,000 people signed up.
After leaving Remote Year in 2020, Greg is now beta-testing his latest project, Spot Meetings, an audio-only meeting platform.
The year 2020 also saw many people become accustomed to working remotely. After not commuting to an office for almost a decade, Greg says that the fact remote work is now the rule and not the exception will play into decisions made by today’s workforce.
On this episode, Greg explains why we’ll see aggressive breakout success from distributed companies, why the hybrid workspace is the most challenging option, and how cryptocurrency plays into all of this.
