13:18: “I always like to be vulnerable in my classes and say to people, this is my practice too. When I say that during the class, many of those times my mind is wandering and I love just to bring it back to the body and, and do it gently, you know, without the criticism or, Oh, how come I can't, you know, but just gently bring it back.”
20:05: “I have to be honest. It took me six months to feel the energy. We're not all trained to slow down, and feel energy. It's a training and a practice and being able to feel it that took me some time.”
21:07: “It’s a practice. It's process driven, it's not goal driven, and the more you practice anything, the more you adapt. So if you want to practice breathwork or mindfulness or weight training, our bodies adapt to what we throw at them. The more you slow, like for Qigong, I feel like it's slowing down, the sensing, the feeling, slowing down the mind, and then all of a sudden, you know, you begin to feel something.”
24:54: “So it's this, this ability to take a breath, to let go of the thoughts and the stories that the mind has created over whatever you're experiencing for a moment, to get present that we’re cultivating in Qigong.”
26:29: “I think Qigong as a practice helps to clear your mind so you can open to your creativity, so you can manifest your desires and your dreams and not get stuck in the emotions and the past and the rigidity.”
34:13 “You're integrating the posture, the breath and the intent, the three energy centers, you're moving them in connection. You're connecting back into this body, this home, you know, that you're cleansing, that you're clearing, that you're paying attention to for a moment. “
36:57: “ I would say consistency is very important in anything that you put your mind to, or your body to.”

9:56 - “The goal of somatic therapy, and somatic healing, is to get the body into a felt sense of safety and connection and attunement… really feeling, at the biological level, this sense of safety.”
11:42 - “When the body feels safe enough, it’s inside the window of tolerance. And, in that state is where homeostasis is and relationships can happen and connect and curiosity, compassion, love. It’s a very relational space because the body feels safe enough to be in connection.”
12:15 - “In our biology, if there’s more threat and our body senses more threat than safety… when we receive enough threat, our brain state and physiology profoundly and almost instantaneously changes. We go from this brain and body that was full of connection and choice, to a very narrow simple menu. And that menu is flight… fight… freeze… fawn or collapse.”
18:18 - “When we’re in these states of overwhelm, burnout, dysregulation. The body in order to feel safe, really needs another witness that has the capacity to hold what we’re going through and not be dysregulated. as the compassion, warmth of just allowing it to be there without fixing it or healing it… In the presence of this empathic witness the body really innately knows how to heal, it really just needs that present empathic witness, and then the body knows what to do.
24:36 - “I think it takes a compassionate sober look at one’s window of capacity, and level of resourcing, and evaluate if it’s an act of kindness to stay and work on widening one’s window of capacity, or if it’s an act of kindness to oneself to leave and take another path.”
29:28 - “This goes beyond burnout. This could be applied to any challenge, trigger. You don’t want to face it head on when you’re still in a state of distress. Resource your body, come back into your window… it likely will take support from a friend, colleague, a coach, a therapist, and then you can face it head on with that resourcing on board.”
34:23 - "The mind wants to make healing so complicated… so dramatic… but really the body’s way of healing is so simple, and sweet, and loving, and compassionate.”
35:39 - “I think that’s one of the most beautiful parts of enlisting someone else: when we’re in that state of threat, our options get smaller, we don’t see all the options available to us. And so it takes that empathic witness that can see where we’re at, have compassion, but also see all the paths and options we have to take and point those out to us.”
37:01 - “It’s really just providing the right environment, the right conditions for someone else’s innate healing to happen.”
43:37 - “Healing is bringing back that innate drive and rhythm of the nervous system that’s been interrupted by burnout, chronic stress or trauma… and coming back into connection with one’s body, to another and to the here and now.”

With a career that began in physical therapy and eventually included practices like Hellerwork and Osteopathic Manual Therapy, Emily Lou understands the importance of addressing the entire body and its interconnected systems for healing. Emily shares how Manual Osteopathic Treatments work to help people open to their body’s innate healing capacities. She explains the four foundational principles of osteopathy, and clarifies what the differences are between a Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) & a manual osteopathic practitioner here in the United States, as well as what to expect from a session with her. Both fascia and fluid flow take center stage in the discussion, along with the primary respiratory mechanism, a marker of vitality and health. This episode highlights the potential for self-healing with the right support and care, offering valuable insights into exactly what osteopathic manual treatments are and what they can do for you
Emily’s Bio: Emily Lou is an Osteopathic Manual Practitioner who integrates physical therapy, Hellerwork, movement analysis, traditional osteopathic methods and recognition of a mind body connection into her work. She graduated from Texas Woman’s University with a Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy in 1986. Since then, she has migrated to an increasingly more holistic approach to helping patients. In 2020, Emily received a Diploma of Osteopathic Manual Practice from the Canadian School of Osteopathy Manual Practice in Vancouver, BC, Canada, and traditional osteopathy has become the scaffolding for her healing practice. Emily's “whole person” approach is hands-on, individualized and follows a set of guiding principles that serve as an organizing force to bring the body back towards its optimal function.

14:59 “ In a state of health, there is this inherent energy that is always there and can be felt, and it creates a predictable motion in every part of the body. So a lot of times what I am doing is trying to feel for the presence of that.
15:16 “I love the idea that we are all created perfect, and sometimes there are just blocks to the expression of that perfection. So my treatment plan is just to try and remove as many blocks as I can, and get people closer to that state.”
28:42 “I heard one time that if you dissolved everything in the body, except for the fascia, you will still be able to recognize a person.”
29:47 “ It’s very common. It might be more the norm, than the exception, that I might work somewhere else to affect the area of complaint.”
33:50 “Very commonly people will come in with back pain, and I’ll work with the diaphragm, and the guts and do some musculoskeletal work, and all of a sudden they can travel better, or they can hike better. And that to me is the ultimate: when they can improve their function and enjoy life better.”
37:40 “When we’re talking about this inherent energy, a lot of people talk about chi or prana, and I feel like it is sort of the same thing that we talk about when we say vitality. We also have this thing called the primary respiratory mechanism, and I feel it is how the vitality expresses itself in the body. You can feel it at every part of the body in a state of health, it’s predictable and should have a certain degree of motion. And I feel for that.”
40:21 “Once I can tell where that is happening and where it’s not, then a lot of my job is removing the restrictions that are blocking it.”
42:26 “I really believe in the power we hold in ourselves, so I think the best healing is when we can get to that (our self-healing capacities), so we can work on just creating joy and living from our essence. That would be the best way for me to be healing.

Kalden Kho joins us today to talk about his unique journey and perspective on life. As a former Tibetan monk, Kalden gives u details about escaping from Tibet to the sanctuary he found in India. Through it all, Kalden kept his Tibetan traditions with him and still lives by them today. From Tibet to the U.S., Kalden has utilized sound work to heal and unify those around him while appreciating the comforts of Westernized society. Kalden now resides in Santa Cruz, California where he brings the best from both of his worlds of experience and is able to share his sound work, breath work, and Tibetan astrology practices with his community.
Kalden Bio: Originally from eastern Tibet, Kalden Kho brings a wealth of Tibetan cultural and spiritual background to his sound work, breath work and astrology offerings. He became a monk at the age of 5 and continued his monastic studies until the age of 23, when he completed a three year retreat. He subsequently escaped to India in the winter of 2000 and joined his Tibetan community in exile, under His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. He moved to the U.S. 10 years ago. Journeying across the U.S, he came to meet people from all walks of life. He discovered that people more and more are seeking connection and serenity to offset the stress and isolation of modern lifestyles.
Kalden’s goal is to create a community here that will combine the best of both cultures, Tibetan and American. To this end, he has dedicated his Sound Work, Breath Work and Tibetan Astrology offerings to introducing America to the warmth and spiritual strength of Traditional Tibetan culture while working to ensure the continued robust existence of Tibetan traditions. 22:40 - “When I traveled through this beautiful country and the states and the different parts of the country, I noticed that this is one of the most developed nations on the planet. Just in many ways, especially in the physical world. But there is something missing about this culture which is everybody has so much and so people just automatically develop a destination that is not necessarily healthy.”
23:47 - “I think loneliness is dangerous and it’s a very unpleasant place to be.”
26:10 - “Life is too short, life is extremely precious and we need to have good times and a good life so happiness depends on each other. We know how to make each other happy and we just have to open the mind and the heart to express to each other.”
36:32 - “The truth is that life is extremely short and we will come in here with nothing materially and then we will leave with nothing. So we have to remember that daily life so that way we can be more relaxed and calm and at peace and less attachment, less desire and less jealous, less competition. Life isn’t permanent and you never know when you’re going.”
38:17 - “You can prepare for this and you can build a very good karma. So you can take it with you. You come with the karmas and you leave with the karmas.”
39:25 - “Success is happiness. If you’re able to live happy and be kind, thats the meaning of life.”

9:18 - “Bringing awareness to your body, and then to therefore bring awareness out into your life is what's most important and to me that's the start of sensual movement.”
10:01 - “When we think about sensuality, we always think about it from this really broad place. And in some cases, even when I first started sensual movement, sensuality was very connected to sexuality and it was like, no, no, no! Let’s take it down to the basics. How are you connecting to your senses?”
10:52 - “I believe that every woman and every body needs to connect to their sensuality to have a more full and rich life.”
13:26 - “Taking up space. Be gentle with yourself. And can you honor where your body is?”
16:30 - “When you’ve had a really stressful week, I’ve been told it’s been really great to just take some time for me. Carve out this time to just breathe because I realize all week I haven’t been breathing.”
19:19 - “Confidence is one of those things. And especially as a shy body, we can always, we tend to slouch our shoulders, just kind of cave in. And that’s okay, but I know even having those poses of power. Even feeling the stretch of your spine or pushing your shoulders back, your chest forward, those simple things can also make you feel confident.”
24:20 -”But how can we change the messaging from your brain? Like how can we heal that and also make peace with whatever that messaging is? And how can we get to the other side so we can really tap into and listen to the messaging that we need and that’s going to take us further in life?”
27:00 - “I think it's really important to give language to whatever (emotion) it is that might be there.”
32:00 - “To go further to actually work with them I have to feel a certain way in my heart about them which feels a little interesting to say. But I have to, the things that really make me feel good about working with someone is how they talk to people, what their interactions with others are like and just the things they say.”
38:25 - “I would define healing as doing something that’s safe that helps you feel better than where you were before.”

7:15 - “Shamanism is about engaging, connecting with and engaging with the power of spirits to affect the healing, and healing in shamanism is making one helping one, whatever being it is, to become whole in its soul.”
8:55 - “A person experiences healing when they experience that feeling of being connected to all parts of themselves within one's own universe of self, and then of course, within the realization that that universe of self is inherently connected to the universe at large in all its layers and dimensions.”
15:42 - “The spirits are always turning me on my head in the way they respond to questions about life and what’s going on. The spirit helpers have a very interesting way of teaching. Mine seem to be pretty humorous.”
23:07 - “Shamanism is about taking from non-ordinary reality, from the spirit realms, and walking it with practical feet. Shamanism is very practical.”
23:25 - “I like to describe shamanic practitioners as housekeepers of the soul. We remove what doesn’t belong, in a lot of different ways, and restore and bring what can enhance and beautify and make whole.”
25:20 - “You just need to be present, be curious and be relaxed, and in a state of receptivity. That’s all that’s required of you.”
32:05 - “Shamanic practice is not necessarily something that resonates for everyone, but people do relate to the idea that they do have some kind of spirit resource that’s been helping them, or that they can appeal to… Shamanic practice hopefully serves to connect them to that. Spirits are real and they are really there for you. If you’ve made it this far in life, you’ve had some spirit help.”
33:33 - “The reclaiming of this particular spiritual inheritance, that we can access this through direct revelation. Through our own seeking. We don’t need a middle man, or a middle woman, to be describing for us what to believe and what to subscribe to. We can go directly to our own spirit helpers and be taught about that… is fundamentally what shamanic work is about.”
39:58 - “These are universal, global, common elements of shamanic practice that everybody all around the world can recognize, understand and has engaged these concepts. Once you become exposed to those basic methods and practices and concepts, you learn to recognize them throughout all the institutionalized religions, the religions traditions and any other spiritual tradition, and any other shamanic culture”
45:05 - “There is no one else that can proclaim you to be a masterful shamanic practitioner. It takes a certain degree of integrity and honesty within yourself to be able to state that…. I still to this day don’t feel 100% confident to proclaim myself that. I’m a practitioner.”
47:55 - “Staying very present. It’s not about being in the shamanic state of consciousness and spacing out, the whole purpose of going into the shamanic state of consciousnes, that light-altered state, is to be more present! When you have all these aspects of your soul retrieved for yourself, you can be more present in your life. To pay attention and to navigate it well.”
53:55 - “Whatever helps you feel delight and awe and gratitude and bring a smile to your face. Do that.”

Quotable:
7:30 - Yoga really means to unite. And what it means to unite is how can we reconnect back to ourselves to that deepest and truest part of ourselves. How do we reconnect with our essential nature? And when we are reunited with our true selves we are awakened too.
8:50 - Yoga Nidra, you can think of it as meditation and it’s almost like, you know how when you get to the end of a yoga class you are often cued to come to a restful pose, the savasana pose where you lie down for the last 5 - 10 minutes of class? So Yoga Nidra is sort of like a guided meditation in savasana.
13:54 - Maybe I’m relaxed but okay, what does relaxation feel like as a physical sensation? And they’re like, “oh, I don't know what you mean by that!” And so yoga nidra will give you some guidance as to where you're feeling it. When you say relaxation for example, do you feel it in your belly, do you feel it in your chest, do you feel it anywhere else? Is it localized, is it in your whole body? Is it heavy, is it light? Is there a temperature to it? And so it kind of just helps you to think of sensations in a whole new way.
26:35 - It (Yoga Nidra) has been shown to help with depression, it's shown to improve anxiety and even more so than other types of seated meditation.
30:00 - The yoga asanas were only done so that we can prepare the body to go into deep meditation for hours.
37:50 - We’re not trying to clear out your thoughts. We’re not saying you need to focus on this or you need to focus on that, in fact, our philosophy is “how can you be open to all that is around?” And curiously what happens is that when you become open to what's around, it becomes background.
43:50 - The whole point of the practice is how can we bring the practice into your daily life so that they are not separate? Because one of the things that people do is that “Oh I’m gonna have my life and then here’s my spiritual life and practice.” Almost like you take yourself out of life to have a moment of peace and tranquility and then okay, now I’ve gotta go back into life. And that probably happens to all of us.
52:15 - I think that all that I could tell her is that everything is gonna be okay and that to be honest I don't think I would’ve changed anything. And so I think I would've wanted her to go through everything that she went through because it brought me to where I am now, And so, I’m really grateful to be where I am now so I don't think I would change anything,
