Robert Randolph
On this week’s episode Kraz talks with Robert Randolph, frontman of Robert Randolph and the Family Band. Randolph is one of the most galvanizing performers in modern music. His band brings an invigorating swagger to the blues, and the way that Randolph combines gospel, funk, and high-energy rock n’ roll makes for an exhilarating listening experience. They have been critically recognized with four Grammy nominations, and Randolph was ranked as one of the top 100 Greatest Guitarists by Rolling Stone at just 33 years old- as a pedal steel player! Randolph throws the conventions of pedal steel playing out the window and completely redefines the role of the instrument. His touch is masterful- literally electrifying, and he’s one of those musicians who maintains such complete control of his instrument that he makes his craft look as easy as breathing. Paired with his soulful, impassioned voice, Robert Randolph’s musical formula is a recipe not only for a good-time night of grooving, but for spiritual, transcendent experiences. Check out Robert and Kraz break down Robert’s musical journey from playing in churches to rocking out in arenas, dive into his introduction to his diverse pool of influences, and discuss his thoughts on the social progress being made in America. Duane Betts and Devon Allman
On this episode of Plus One Eric talks with Duane Betts and Devon Allman, founding members of The Allman Betts Band. Devon and Duane each have had distinguished solo careers, but it was inevitable that one day the two would team up to revitalize their long-running familial musical connection. The Allman Betts Band formed in 2018 and kicked off their new musical endeavor with a well-received 2019 tour of the U.S., including several European dates. Having grown up on the road enraptured with rock n’ roll music, it’s fitting that the two partners have made a livelihood out of their infatuation with the art form. While you may hear the band’s name and think of their rock-legend fathers Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts, make no mistake- these two young-guns have given new life to the soaring southern rock melodies that their fathers helped to pioneer. In this episode Duane, Devon, and Kraz talk about growing up in the heat of the rock n’ roll daydream, songwriting chemistry between the two, Devon's incredible tale of meeting his father Gregg, and much more. Check out Kraz delivering another riveting interview with these two rockin’ reinventors. Dave Schools
On this episode of Plus One Eric talks with Dave Schools, founding member and powerhouse bassist of Widespread Panic. Widespread Panic has been an elite-level act in the jam scene for over three decades, and they are known for their lively fusion of southern rock, funk, and good time rock n’ roll. The band has gone through numerous lineup changes over the course of their lengthy career, and Schools has bumped the band along with his multifaceted six-string bass style since the very beginning. Schools has a unique ability to stealthily shift between hard rock-based and funk-oriented grooves. His acute, intuitive interpretation of his influences, which he and Kraz discuss extensively in this conversation, has been a driving force in the wild musical trail that Widespread Panic has blazed throughout the country over the course of their career, including each of their record-breaking 60 sold-outshowsat Red Rocks Amphitheatre. In this expansive conversation, Schools and Kraz discuss everything from the formative years of Panic in Athens and the way they developed their sound, to differences between playing and producing music, to touching tales about late musical companions M ikey Houser and Neal Casal. If you’re a Panic fan or are interested in the concept of musical evolution, you don’t want to miss this deep cut of an episode. George Porter, Jr.
On this episode of Plus One Eric talks with George Porter Jr., funk-master and founding member of The Meters. Porter is a New Orleans legend, but his slick playing and deep-pocket grooves have made him a 4-string-fable across the globe. While Porter has touched on many musical styles throughout his career, there is an undeniable hint of Crescent City soul in just about every word he speaks during this colorful conversation. In this episode, Porter and Kraz talk about the origin story of The Meters, Porter’s discovery of the bass guitar, playing with Bill Kreutzmann and The Dead, and many other fascinating tales of his extraordinary musical life.   Porter’s passion for music is undeniable, and it’s on full display when Porter talks about the “double-edged blade” of The Meters’ music being sampled in rap and pop songs- his playful and light-hearted attitude towards missing out on critical and financial recognition from others using his music is an earnest confirmation of his love for his artform- he’s just happy that these grooves still fill the air.   This podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. On this episode of Plus One Eric talks with bass-extraordinaire Oteil Burbridge, who is best known for his playing with the Allman Brothers Band and Dead & Co. Oteil’s musical resume is next-level; in addition to playing with the aforementioned groups, Oteil is also a founding member of The Aquarium Rescue Unit and Tedeschi Trucks Band, and has worked with Col. Bruce Hampton, Trey Anastasio, Page McConnell, Bill Kreutzmann, and many other legendary artists. The conversation is too lively to be summed up in a few sentences, but in this episode Oteil and Kraz go deep on joining the Allman Brothers, learning the Grateful Dead’s songbook, new discoveries on the bass, and Oteil’s beautiful relationship with his late brother Kofi. If you’re a musician or simply a lover of music, this is a can’t-miss conversation between two longtime friends. There’s nothing like an artist who approaches their craft with absolute passion and sincerity, and  Oteil’s spiritual connection with music is on full display in this jam-packed episode. The way he talks about music makes you want to pick up an instrument yourself and start jammin’ away! Cory Wong
On this episode of Plus One Eric talks with guitarist and songwriter Cory Wong, whose intricate rhythmic style and eclectic solo projects have propelled him to prominence in the jazz and funk world.  Widely exalted for his ambitious and genre-fusing solo projects, Wong has also received critical recognition for his playing with Vulfpeck, who have erupted through the underground indie scene to plant themselves as a modern-day staple for funk music listeners.  In 2019, Vulfpeck became the first band without a label or manager to sell out Madison Square Garden, and throughout 2020 Wong has worked to continue to push new boundaries with his music.   Musically nurtured in Minneapolis jazz clubs by former members of Prince’s band, Wong has developed a uniquely percussive rhythm technique. In this episode, Kraz and Cory talk about the influences that lead to Wong’s stylistic development, dive in-depth on songwriting and recording, and deconstruct life as a musician.
