Once you start digging into the local political space, you realize it is ALL ABOUT THE MAPS!  It ends up every 10 years in coordination with the census we redistrict; I had no idea! All I knew was that we had a whole new set of House & Senate districts this year, and it made for a very stressful and confusing caucus prep!  I wanted to understand this more, so after attending a Leadership Program of the Rockies Retreat seeing Hunter Barnett present, I had to sit him down for an interview to break down the whole process. He is 1 of the 12 Legislative Commissioner who redrew the 100 General Assembly seats (35 state senate and 65 state house) and spearheaded the development of the state senate map. https://redistricting.colorado.gov/content/barnett We had an excellent conversation that really explained the process. I invited my friend Kristi Burton Brown the Colorado GOP Chairwoman to talk about the first steps in a citizen’s engagement with representative government- otherwise known as CAUCUS!  It's fitting having KBB on for this episode because I met her on day one at my own Caucus two years ago! In urban areas, this is generally “neighborhood” in size.   Precinct Committee Person or Precinct Leaders – There are typically two precinct committee people elected for two-year terms for each precinct, though many are vacant. They represent the precinct with the County Republican Party and perform other functions throughout their term such as Get Out The Vote they also have a voice in county party leadership as well. Delegate – Delegates are elected from each precinct to represent the precinct at the County and State Assembly to choose Republican candidates to appear on the primary ballot.  County Assembly – The delegates at the county assembly will select Republican candidates to appear on the primary ballot for county offices, and will elect delegates to go to other assemblies to select Republican candidates to appear on the primary ballot for statewide and federal races.  Other Assemblies – Other Assemblies (or “Higher Assemblies”) are assemblies that meet to select Republican candidates to appear on the primary ballot for offices that comprise a geographic region other than County.
