N1) Japan now has a system in place where you can receive government money if you become sick or diabled from the covid-19 vaccine. In the case of death the deceased's family would receive the relief funds.

N2) There have been cases where people have had adverse reactions to the covid-19 vaccine. In Japanese this is called “fuku-hanno”. It is caused by your immune system trying to protect your body from the virus at the time of the vaccine. Those who have allergies or regularly take some medication are more likely to have a reaction. But most people recover from the side effects within several days.

In rare cases, some people still feel sick after several days or have some prolonged symptoms. In extreme cases, they might feel seriously ill, sometimes suffering neurological damage. If you feel sick or are having a severe reaction, go to the hospital for a medical examination.

N3) If you have side effects from the vaccination, please take advantage of this relief system. You can get a full or partial refund for all or some of the expenses for treatment or hospitalization. Please consult with the government office where your residence is registered.

N4) If a doctor authorizes that you were sick or admitted to the hospital because of side effects from the vaccine you could get a refund. For example, all medical costs accrued because of the reaction to the vaccine will be paid back. If you are hospitalized you could get a 30,000 yen allowance for that month. If you are left physically or mentally impaired, you can get 3 to 5 million yen a year. In the case of death your family will receive the relief money.

N5) Please be aware that while helpful, the screening process can take several months if all paperwork has been received and the doctor has confirmed your illness was due to the vaccine. In order to be considered for the relief money, make sure to keep all documents associated with the vaccine. For example, your vaccination certificate which you’ll receive after having both doses. You will get one certificate by mail which you will receive from the local government and one you get at the hospital at the time of vaccination.
