「So the Lord said to Joshua:

　"Get up! Why do you lie thus on your face?」　　Amen.

Joshua took the city of Jericho without losing a single soldier, but was defeated at the next town, Ai, a small town. This was because some of the people had sinned and hidden it. God commanded Joshua to "arrive and cleanse the sin that caused the defeat." As a result, Achan's sin was exposed and he was destroyed. The next morning, Joshua went out to battle and was victorious. If Achan had repented sooner, I believe there would not have been such a great sacrifice. Let us keep in mind the cry of the Valley of Achor.
