Join me and guests, Luna Bruno, Molly Hendryx, and Ashley Hamby, for a conversation about balancing life as moms and nationally ranked powerlifters. Get to know them as they share inspiring stories about their fitness journeys and motherhood and how going after their goals and carving out time for their mental and physical well-being has empowered them and made them the best moms and role models they can be for their children.
Meet Ashley. Ashley started using Pilates and home workout videos when her daughter, McKenna, now 3 and a half, was a year old because she wanted to lose the baby weight. She got her first set of 8 lb dumbbells a few months later and quickly discovered she really liked lifting weights and getting stronger. She joined her first gym a year later in July 2021 and competed in her first powerlifting competition in January 2022. She started with a free remote coach that did her programming for 12 weeks but then found herself on her own and did the meet prep by herself and went to the meet alone. Shortly after that meet she hired a coach and joined the Ironside powerlifting team.

Meet Molly. Molly is a 2x Submaster national powerlifting champion, a single mom of two girls, Tyra, 17, and Charlotte, 7, and a strength and cheer coach. In high school, Molly was a cheerleader and mid-distance runner. She didn’t start lifting weights until after having her second daughter. She joined a bootcamp style gym that also had a powerlifting coach. After moving to Portland, and falling into a period of depression, it was three years before she started lifting and running again to help move past this dark period. She started powerlifting seriously again and joined the Ironside powerlifting team mid-2022.

Meet Luna. Luna is from Southern California and has lived in the US, Mexico, and Canada. She is mom to Kira, who is three years old. She’s been a full-time single mom for 2.5 years and moved herself and her daughter from Canada to Portland in 2021. Luna has always been an athlete, playing water polo, softball, and volleyball in high school. She’s always processed her emotions through fitness and movement. She started powerlifting in 2020 after her husband left her and her daughter to help her get through a very difficult time. She is also on the Ironside powerlifting team and a nationally qualified elite lifter.

Join me and guest, Teya Humphris, for a conversation about disability and fitness. Teya is a certified personal trainer working full time for a disability non-profit, as well as part time as a class instructor and trainer for a small fitness studio in Berkshire, UK, where she lives. She aims to have her own training business working with disabled people and those that feel excluded from fitness.
Teya has cerebral palsy – specifically spastically hemiplegia which means that it affects her unilaterally, for her that’s her right arm and leg. In her own words, Teya became a personal trainer for the girl that would go home from school crying because she was never picked for sports teams; the girl who got laughed at for the way she ran; for the woman that felt like she had crossed enemy lines every time she entered a gym; for the woman who stopped trying and turned her back on sport and exercise because “it wasn’t for her.”
Until she realized it was. That she was never the problem, nor was her disability. That with the right support she could not only gain so much from exercise, but she could enjoy it and excel at it. So yeah, you’re damn right she’s participating – she got her own participation award in the form of a personal training qualification. She did this for that young girl and for every person that has been taught by society and the fitness industry that exercise isn’t “for them.”
I met Teya through social media many years ago and had the opportunity to meet in person when traveling through the UK in 2019. Teya and I share a love for lifting weights, training others, dogs, and travel. She is fluent in Italian and is the best London tour guide you will ever find.

Join me and guest, Marci Nevin, in a conversation about earning the right to enter into a calorie deficit. This is a difficult truth for many, especially when feeling a sense of urgency to lose weight, but dieting is a stressor on your body because you're giving it less fuel than it requires, and your body needs to be in a good place before dropping calories. The process will be a whole lot harder and more frustrating without having your health, habits, and mindset in a solid place first. Set yourself up for success going in and you will lose the weight and get out of that calorie deficit faster.

Join me and guest, Marne Minard, for a conversation about food as medicine.
To Marne, the idea of food as medicine is a concept woven like a thread into how she and others live their lives. It doesn’t necessarily mean following a dogmatic list of rules or a specific diet protocol, it can simply mean “eating well." What does "eating well" look like. It could be eating with the seasons, eating as locally as possible, supporting sustainable agriculture, eating balanced meals which include plant foods, and limiting consumption of processed and packaged foods. It can also mean turning to foods for their healing benefits when needed, such as bone broths for immune health and turmeric for its anti-inflammatory properties. Marne found her passion for nutrition and food as medicine while working for the University of Oregon Athletics Department and being immersed in the athletic world. She became very interested in the diets of collegiate athletes and was shocked to learn about the poor quality of many of the foods provided to them. Marne's passion led her to leave U of O and pursue her Masters in nutrition and eventually open Bastion PDX a gluten, dairy, refined sugar, corn and soy free restaurant in Sellwood, OR. Bastion PDX proves that "eating well" also means enjoying delicious comfort food. Bastion PDX is a place where everyone, including those with food sensitivities can enjoy a meal out with friends and family and without fear.
To learn more about Bastion PDX visit their website at www.bastionpdx.com and follow them on Instagram @bastion_pdx.

Join me, Joe Stephen, and Laurie Maranian, co-founders of Urban PowerHouse, for a conversation about their mission to increase exposure and participation of underserved youth and adults in strength sports through training, information access, and financial support.
WHO THEY ARE
Urban PowerHouse is a 501c3 organization bringing empowerment and self-growth to those in Boston’s urban centers through strength & power sports.
In a specialized training facility, Urban PowerHouse offers high quality coaching, training and competition opportunities in powerlifting and weightlifting, and nutrition education in a unique, affordable environment where people of all socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds are training and learning together as a part of the same community.
Their mission is to get a barbell into the hands of individuals of color living in and around Boston. They feel it is important to present an option other than the ball sports typically presented as the main means of acceptance, development, and opportunity.
THEIR STORY
In March of 2020, when COVID shut down the commercial gym they were training in, Joe and Laurie moved their equipment into a 250 sq ft storage facility space along with a few others they were coaching. Even in this tiny space, more and more individuals reached out letting them know they wanted to train with them too. To accommodate the growing demand, they knew they needed a larger place to train. As a result of networking and telling their story, they became aware of an opportunity for an amazing and suitable space. In May of 2021 they moved into a 3,000 square foot facility. Less than a year later, they have served 30 coached athletes, 14 additional gym members, and have welcomed 250 individuals into their gym for strength sports and community building events.
Help Urban PowerHouse make powerlifting and weightlifting attainable for everyone by making a gift today. Your donation will help them provide training, information access, and financial support to youth and adult athletes.
