While legacy-worthy books can have a global impact, their influence can be just as profound closer to home. Writing for family, friends, and community can create a personal legacy that resonates deeply with those you love and perhaps while you’re still alive. Today, we'll explore how such books can create lasting memories and impart valuable lessons today and for future generations.

The Personal Touch of Legacy-Worthy Books

Books written with family and community in mind carry a personal connection that adds layers of meaning and significance. Here are some key attributes:

Personal Connection: Tailor your stories to the unique interests and values of your loved ones. For example, I’m writing the Zak Bates Eco-adventure series for my grandchildren, Logan and Piper, and for the children in their generation, which as far as I know has yet to be named. (Logan is three and Piper is one). These stories reflect my lifelong love for animals as well as my passion for environmental stewardship. It is my hope and intention to inspire the readers of the series to become caring and responsible stewards of the Earth and all its inhabitants.

Tailored Content: Address themes that resonate with your family’s values and experiences. Include adventures and lessons that you want your grandchildren to learn and cherish. For example, Zak Bates starts out quite shy, especially around girls (as was I growing up) but his love for animals calls him forth to finally speak up for the entire animal kingdom before the world leaders. (And I’ll do my best to not share anymore major spoilers in case you decide to read the series.)

Emotional Resonance: Evoke strong emotions and connections through personal stories, memories, and messages. Share heartfelt notes and dedications within the book, expressing your love and hopes for the future. So far, all four of the Zak Bates Eco-adventure stories are based on real life situations that occur in my own life or that I learned about as a lifelong animal lover, so it’s not surprising that Zak’s best friend’s mother happens to be the local small animal veterinarian. Remember the old adage, “write about what you know.”

Preservation of Family History: You may also want to document and preserve family stories, traditions, and values, including adding photographs, letters, and memorabilia to create a rich tapestry of your family’s legacy. The closest I’ve come to this so far are a series of personal essays that have appeared in several of the Chicken Soup for the Soul book series. (You can read several of these including my favorite one here that appeared in Married Life, the true story of how I met and married the love of my life entitled Sneaking Up On Commitment.)

Educational Value: Impart important lessons and knowledge in an engaging way. For children, use stories to teach values, life skills, and important knowledge about the world. My wife recently shared the Zak Bates books with one of her accounting clients who’s a former middle-school teacher. After reading the books, she commented how much she enjoyed the life lessons I had cleverly woven into the stories. I was surprised and pleased by the comment because I hadn’t realized I had done so, but sharing from my personal experiences as a lifelong animal lover had those lessons spring forth naturally.

The Impact on Family and Community

Creating legacy-worthy books for your family and community can have a profound impact, fostering connections and preserving your legacy. Here are a few ways these books make a difference:

* Strengthening Family Bonds: Sharing stories that reflect family values and history strengthens bonds and fosters a sense of belonging.

* Inspiring Future Generations: Books like the Zak Bates Eco-adventure series can inspire children to adopt positive values and behaviors, such as environmental stewardship.

* Creating Lasting Memories: Personal stories and messages become cherished memories that family members can revisit, providing comfort and inspiration.

* Fostering Community Connections: Sharing books within your community can create a sense of unity and shared values, fostering stronger connections. I recently made a connection with one of our local bookstore owners, and now I’m pleased to be able to tell my friends and acquaintances that they can purchase my books at Off the Wall Books N Cafe including the Zak Bates books.

Thoughtful Questions for Aspiring Authors

As you create legacy-worthy books for your family and community, consider these questions to guide your work:

* How can I tailor my stories to reflect the unique interests and values of my loved ones?

* What themes and lessons do I want to impart to future generations?

* How can I evoke strong emotions and connections through my writing?

* What elements of family history and traditions can I include in my writing?

* What personal messages and dedications can I include to add depth and meaning?

By reflecting on these questions, you can create books that resonate deeply with your family and community, leaving a lasting legacy of love, values, and cherished memories.
