In a world rapidly evolving with technology, artificial intelligence (AI) stands at the forefront of this change, especially in the realm of writing and authorship. As an A-4 (AI-Assisted Artisan Author), a term coined by indie author and podcaster Joanna Penn, I've embraced this evolution, viewing AI as a tool that, when wielded ethically, can enhance the creative process for authors.
The Scalpel Analogy
My perspective on AI stems from my days as a small animal vet, where I frequently used a scalpel—a tool of precision, capable of healing or harming, depending on the hands that wielded it. AI, I believe, shares this dual nature. It is a powerful tool that can be used for immense good or significant harm. The key lies in the intent and ethics of the user.
As authors, we are constantly seeking tools to refine our craft and reach wider audiences. AI offers unparalleled advantages in this regard. It can assist with language processing, plot generation, and even provide insights into reader preferences. However, the onus of using it ethically lies with us, the authors. We must navigate this new landscape with a commitment to uphold the integrity of our work and the well-being of our readers.
The Importance of Ethical Use
Shying away from AI due to its potential for misuse isn't a solution. Instead, we must actively engage with these technologies, using them to promote good and maintain a balance in the digital ecosystem. By using AI ethically, we set a standard, showing that technology can coexist with human creativity without compromising it.
Joining forces with visionaries like Joanna Penn, I proudly identify as an A-4, utilizing AI to enhance my storytelling while keeping my moral compass steady. I encourage my Write On Purpose clients to explore these tools, not with fear, but with a sense of responsibility and optimism.
In fact, I address the use of A. I. in the introduction of my soon-to-be-released book, Write On Purpose: Authoring Your Legacy in the Second Half of Your Life:
I would like to introduce you to my A.I. team members who have been instrumental in the creation of this book. First and foremost, there's ChatGPT, whom I've affectionately renamed GePeTo. GePeTo has been the lead A.I. team member, providing invaluable assistance and insights throughout the writing process. I've also had the pleasure of working with Claude and Gemini, two other remarkable A.I. entities that have contributed to the development of this book.
However, I want to make it perfectly clear that this book was not solely written by A.I., as has been the case with many recently published works. Every word has been meticulously considered and reviewed by humans, starting with me, the human author, and then further refined by my human editors. Many sections of this book were written entirely by me, without any A.I. involvement, while other sections were crafted in collaboration with one or more of my A.I. teammates.
If the idea of A.I. assisted writing is something you're not comfortable with, then this may not be the book for you. That's precisely why I've chosen to address this topic upfront, before we embark on the hero's journey from aspiring author to published author and, ultimately, legacy builder.
I firmly believe that the judicious use of A.I. in the creative process can lead to remarkable results, enabling authors to push the boundaries of their craft and explore new frontiers in storytelling. By embracing the potential of A.I. while maintaining the essential human touch, I believe we can create works that are both innovative and deeply resonant with readers.
NOTE: Write On Purpose: Authoring Your Legacy in the Second Half of Your Life is now for pre-order on Amazon at a 50% saving off the retail price. Pre-order bonuses to be announced soon. Now, back to the topic after this shameless commercial. :-)
As A-4 authors, we stand at the crossroads of a new era in writing. By embracing AI tools ethically, we are not only future-proofing our craft but also ensuring that the heart of storytelling remains human. This path may not align with everyone's views, but it's a journey worth undertaking for the sake of creative evolution and ethical balance.
P.S. I know this subject is perhaps one of the most controversial ones to hit the literary world in my life time which is almost three-quarters of a century—a century where controversies have flourished. I’d still very much like to hear your thoughts on the subject…preferably in an open, honest discussion as though we were in the same room together mulling this over with a glass of wine.
