“Retriever” by Sara L. Godwin
There are spaces within me I keep blank.
Thoughts I push out.
Ideas my right and left brain use to play keep-away from my consciousness.
I rearrange the furniture to cover up spots of recollection.
I hang pictures to hide events.
I dig holes, deep and dark,
to bury,
to forget.
But memory is a dog.
It hunts what I hide,
plays fetch,
lays at my feet all things I secret away,
like an offering.
Then he happily waits, tail wagging,
to start the game all over again.
A short story of Sara’s, “Afternoon Tea,” can be found in the September 2020 issue of www.brilliantflashfiction.com

“Gone Too Soon” by Heidi Wehrmann LaMarr
I look at her and think of you.
Flourishing in the moment,
Surrounded by an ocean of sky and clouds.
Strength beyond size.
Wisdom beyond years.
She smiles,
Innocent and bright.
You smile,
Secrets hidden behind your eyes
sadness,
loneliness,
emptiness.
I look at her and wonder if she
will make a similar choice and be,
before we know,
without a warning,
gone too soon.
In memory of L.J., N.W., D.R., J.E., B.B. and all the others who were gone too soon.

“Moth Silver Shimmer” by Tim Reisert
The night we packed
the car a moth
fluttered around the
bright kitchen,
had slipped inside
before the screendoor flap.
I followed in chase
with open but slow
palms and when
I swooped underneath it
and closed my hand,
felt its wings
against my fingers
now held tight
not tight enough
for it flew again,
up by the cupboards
and the fruit bowl,
its flight crooked, its
moth silver shimmer
on my hand.
