Hmmmm….
As a parent and mental health professional who works with children I generally find the ideas presented in this podcast to be current and spot on. However the last episode on competitiveness references all ‘he’ and ‘his’. I know the question involved a boy, but it became very irritating. C’mon, guys! It’s 2023. This is an issue with girls now, too! Let’s move out of that box!

Not So Random
When I work up wide awake and saw that it was only 11:44pm, there was nothing else to do but stay up. I “stumbled” upon this podcast and found it helpful for a few reasons. First, unity in parenting is important. Addressing behavior appropriately is equally important (redeeming v. punishing). Having a support system is valuable. Using the right language is key to helping, rather than exasperating a situation. Thank you Tim and Michael. Being from the era when these issues were dealt with inappropriately, I am thankful for sound education. God bless you for all the good this podcast will do for so many.

Interesting!
Interesting to hear a little of the brain science behind certain behaviors. Love that they take listener questions and really do a deep dive for that person, but also make it relatable to all listeners. Looking forward to hearing more.

Dad of Three Boys
For me, this podcast has been enormously helpful on a number of topics. As I raise three boys under 10 years old, the information and insights have been practical and helpful to this chapter of life for me. Please continue to keep up the important work. Thank you!

Not brain-based, pro time out and spanning
Not worth your time. There doesn’t seem to be much science backing this up. Primarily the same parenting advice from a generation ago: boys will be boys, put them in time out, etc.

Not impressed
Not sure how episode 131 is going to inform or help parents in any way. I’m a mom who was looking for something interesting and refreshing to listen to. I thought the topic was suiting for me as a mother of a 9 year old doing virtual learning but their advice was just redundant. I don’t care to listen to any other episodes based on that impression.

Refreshing
I am currently reading Michael Gurion’s book, “The Wonder of Boys”. I heard him on a podcast previously and loved his perspective on raising our boys—was super happy to find this podcast. It’s refreshing to listen to someone that is an expert in his area and does not seem to be as extreme as these other parenting gurus. With so much conflicting advice out there I feel I have finally found someone who truly understands the beauty and messiness of parenting. Michael Gurian emphasizes the importance of allowing our boys to develop as they are biologically intended to and how we as parents can foster this development. I am so glad I stumbled upon this podcast!

Longtime listener
I’m elated to see this podcast still going. It’s educational, entertaining, and something I like to refer to when I need some perspective on a new situation. Excellent resource suggestions-people, books, etc.

Great at first
I really enjoyed listening to a few episodes until I heard the one on spanking. Shocked and disappointed in the promotion of healthy “spanking” and how to do it right by surprising the child. I will search for more parenting podcasts that treat and view children as worthy of basic respect.

A podcast every parent should hear
Outstanding. I have learned so much, from every episode. With two boys, and today’s societal challenges, I find this podcast more than helpful- it offers a glimmer of hope for the future generations of young men. Thank you Tim and Michael for all you do.

Very biased
I enjoyed this podcast with some skepticism until I reached an episode that is very clearly denouncing feminism as being anti-male. If you think this, you clearly have no idea what feminism stands for. It’s not anti-male, it’s anti-toxic masculinity. It’s not asking a lot. In the same couple minutes, one of the hosts stated that human society survived because of the patriarchy. I highly disagree with that and it’s clearly only in line with western worldviews. I’d really encourage the hosts to host a guest speaker of a different race, ethnicity or gender every once in a while so the hosts and listeners may learn something outside the worldview of the “majority”. Honestly very disappointed. I very much believe men’s mental health is disregarded, but stating extreme views that are offensive and under-researched won’t help your cause.

Good info, not an authoritative source of diversity advice
As a scientist, I certainly appreciate the evidence-based intention behind this podcast, and the effort it takes to break research down in a way that can be discussed on a podcast. However, I listened to several episodes where the hosts seem to minimize experiences and perspectives of maligned populations. As an underrepresented minority who has seen the reality of gender pay parity, microaggressions, and fear by parents of color that their coming of age children may fall victim to rampant police brutality, I felt that these hosts have major sociocultural blind spots (as far as diversity and inclusion goes), and no ground to dispute other people’s experiences. In these particular topics, I would respect these hosts more if they owned their privilege (like many other respectable professionals of their ilk), and brought in colleagues from relevant ethnic or cultural backgrounds who research such topics empirically and without personal biases.

These men are not qualified to give nutrition advice!
I was interest in this podcast until you started talking about removing gluten from a child’s diet. This is dangerous advice. People don’t always know how to do a major diet modification like that while still providing a balanced diet. Not to mention it’s expensive, difficult, and there really is not good evidence for it as it relates to ADD or ADHD. This type of modification should be overseen by a dietitian who practices evidence based nutrition, not a naturopath.

Modern parents, steer clear!
These two male hosts are extremely focused on traditional gender roles, speaking almost exclusively about gender differences in every episode and using the podcast as a platform to push their personal gender-essentialist views. They use “brain research” to reinforce their opinions that boys and girls don’t just have a few differences, but that they are completely different and need to be parented differently ... often coming very close to glorifying toxic masculinity. Don’t listen.

Good thoughts and bad
I found a lot of helpful info in this podcast but I was really turned off when a guest said we are living in an “anti male era”.

So far so good! Respectful approach!
I’ve only listened to a couple episodes so far, and I’m really liking their approach to the topics they bring up. Nothing about this podcast has seemed misogynistic to me, but I’ll update my review if I hear something that is.

Wanted to like it
Had this recommended to me by a friend. But started in on the “traditional masculinity” episode and was very disappointed. They obviously have no respect or understanding of feminism but are intent on saying they’re wrong. Spent the first 10 minutes just saying that rather than going into the science I thought they were going to talk about. You don’t need to trash feminism to talk about masculinity. And honestly their idea of traditional masculinity: stoic and aggressive really doesn’t give the full range of what masculinity is. They don’t understand the terms they are talking about which makes me highly sceptical of them.

Biased, not super scientific, but still good
I’m not surprised to see all the review that say this is a gender biased podcast. For me this podcast, while having some definite biases, offers some new ways of thinking and understanding issues of parenting. It is not as scientific as the name suggests, though they occasionally quote a study or two. Mostly they quote the cohosts books. And at least one time they quoted someone else but drew an unscientific correlation from the quote. That being said, I was quite interested in the series about how men and women parent differently. I’ve mostly heard you need to have a “United” approach (read: same), which seems impossible in my experience as my husbands instincts in parenting are far different from mine.

Biased, gendered, misogynist
Not much science here, just two men resentful of women’s progress.

Worth the listen!
After browsing through the reviews, obviously most are very positive but then some give 1 star ratings, which I think are very unrealistic. Here are my two cents: Listen to more than one episode before making an opinion. Yes, the show is broadcasted by two slightly older white guys, so yeah, there will probably be a little bit of bias. However, they are very knowledgeable and try to refrain from biases or let you know when they may not have the perfect answer. If you’re looking for something that is based on science rather than anecdotes, you’re going to get a lot out of this podcast. Is some of the science controversial or one-sided? Sure, but it’s still more than I ever knew, plus they always encourage you to be a citizen scientist on the claims they make so you can understand for yourself. People act like there should always be a set-in-stone answer for things, but that is simply not the case, and this show does a good job of providing a general foundation to positively raising your child/children.

Not much actual science
As a scientist, I am disappointed. This podcast seems to present opinions as science.

Weird First Episode
The potty training episode was very confusing. There weren’t any answers to potty training. A lot of talking in circles

Some interesting parts but lots of assumptions
I really wanted to like this. I want a science based approach to understanding my kid but they just kill me with the “moms parent this way and dads this way”. Just not my experience as a mom or as a daughter.

As a father of two boys
As a father of two boys I’m sometimes concerned that boys are underperforming in school at every level, and our culture seems afraid to acknowledge this out of fear of risking progress made with girls. This podcast gives great actionable advice for parents of both boys and girls, paying particular attention to the unique needs of each. If you want great advice that doesn’t gloss over (or entirely omit) differences between boys and girls, this podcast is highly recommended.

Was All For This Until...
Bummer, I wanted to like this. It was the episode on Children’s’ Brains and Screen Time that helped me decide. Claims that the future of university education is under stress because due to our “safe space culture”; specifically that less men will go to University out of fear they will be accused by a woman for behaviors that make her uncomfortable. That doesn’t sound like a lot of brain science to me. That sounds like the willfully ignorant musings of someone whom I don’t care to spend my time listening to (especially as it concerns raising my son). It’s all small component of the podcast, but it gives me greater insight into how this podcast regards gender and behavior as a whole.

Informative, interesting and helpful
The title says it all. I love the backing of scientific evidence on their positions, and what they advise is based on realistic expectations for families. I have recommended it to all of my mom friends!

Thank you!
My favorite parenting podcast! I’ve tried so many different ideas and the science based approach feels most true to me. I also wrote in a question and had it answered on the podcast! I appreciate everything these two do!
talkin to myself
Okay if you keep your skeptic hat firmly on.
Some good stuff here, but ultimately a very biased. I have an issue with people presenting things as scientific facts, when really they’re little more than opinions. There are a lot of claims here that aren’t really backed up by evidence. Or have conflicting research and aren’t as clear cut as they make it out to be. You can point to a study that shows one thing, but you need to mention if there are several other studies that show the complete opposite. That’s the case for many of their claims. Lots of sweeping generalizations regarding gender. The gender fluid episode was really cringe. It wouldn’t bother me so much if they didn’t act like these were hard facts, rather than opinions. Brain science my butt.

Amazing
Love this podcast. They get to the point, use scientific information to back up their reasoning, and it’s just like nothing else out their. I really enjoy and love it and share each episode with my husband!

Insightful
I love this podcast! They talk a lot about the brain science behind normal and abnormal development in boys and girls. It’s educational but presented in such a way as to be easily understood and relatable. There is so much out there about the nurture aspect of raising kids and this focuses a bit more on the nature aspect. Listening has really helped me understand my kids better and realize the difference between healthy and unhealthy behavior. As the mother of a very active boy I especially love their distinction between aggression and violence. I highly recommend this podcast to anyone who wants to better understand their kids behavior.

A little biased
Good information from a scientific angle but it’s clearly male research because you can see the bias. It also isn’t as helpful if you don’t have a traditional family

Awesome!
I am only a few episodes in and am really enjoying the podcast so far. Learning more about how children’s brains work, and the difference between boys and girls brains, is really helpful. This is just what I have been looking for. I have four kids (two boys, two girls), a boy and girl in upper grade school and a boy and girl under 5. So I’m dealing with all age groups, both genders, and I really appreciate this perspective. I am all for gender equality and empowering girls/women, but I feel like more focus needs to be put on our boys. Positive role models in media (especially tv shows for young kids...hello Disney) are a lot harder to find for boys. Until I listened to the podcast here about boys, I had never heard about some of these differences in the ways boys bond (at least in recent memory) which I think will be very helpful. I read and listen to a lot of parenting info, and a lot of emphasis is put on talking and emotions which I think is wonderful and important, but I really appreciate this more rounded perspective on what boys need as well, and of course learning more in depth on what girls need as well. Looking forward to getting caught up to the latest episodes and listening as they are released! Thanks for such a well researched and informative podcast!

Finally!
As a mom of two boys, I so appreciate the information and perspective of this podcast. It’s tragic to see our current societal trend trying to wash over decades of clear, vital and relevant research, and I love how refreshing and scientifically insightful these podcast discussions are.

Wow
I’m a mom of two boys and it seriously opened my mind to maybe I’m wasting my time trying to talk to my kids not in a bad way obviously it just made me realize that it is true my kids respond better to me when I play around or when their dad plays wrestle with them, but until today I didn’t see it that way, so thank you 🙏🏽 loved all the information

Launch your podcast on Amazon Alexa.
This is a great podcast but it is missing one imortant thing. We can not access it on Amazon Alexa with voice command like other parenting podcast Zen Parrenting and Janet Launsburry unruffled podcasts. If you don't know how to launch your podcast on Alexa you can use any popular platform like GoVocal.AI to launch your podcast on Alexa. As a new mother I have really enjoyed listening to the podcasts on the differences in moms and dad as well as boys and girls. It really give clarity to the differences. I have learned so much and become a more understanding parent because of it! These are truly some awesome educational resources and I highly recommend this podcast!

really problematic perspectives on gender.
the gender fluid episode was super problematic, and really awkward, and filled with minimizing and skeptical language. i found nothing actionable for parents within, and what’s more felt an erasure of the grey areas of gender altogether.

Male perspective
I appreciate the insights and science but it is a bit too clearly a male perspective. They continue to discuss how moms have a hard time with the dad’s way of parenting. What about the dad’s having an issue with the mother’s way? I appreciate them noting that there are always exceptions to their findings, but sometimes their info and examples are too far to the extreme of the stereotypes.
