Natasja Laurie is a software engineer based in Australia. She creates applications at A Cloud Guru, an online training platform for people interested in information technology. Natasja is also a teacher at General Assembly, and tutors at Code Like a Girl, an organization that encourages girls to pursue technology and computer science. It was a pleasure to talk to Natasja about how she got into programming, her experience with sexism, and her advice for her thirteen year old self.

I am so excited to introduce my guest Shana, the owner of shop narcissus, a jewelry brand that sells high quality pieces inspired by greek mythology. It was a pleasure to talk to Shana about how she started her jewelry brand, what it’s like being a small business owner, and the advice she’d give to other young women interested in going into business. 

Amelia is a singer and musician based in Los Angeles. With a lifelong love of music, Amelia has been writing songs since her early teen years. She has posting covers and original songs on Tik Tok, amassing over a hundred seventy thousand followers. It was a pleasure to speak with Amelia about how she got started in music, sexism in the industry, and how she’d like her career to progress in the future.

Saboria is an academic and future doctor based in California. With a background in psychology and public health, Saboria focuses on family health, public health and health policy and advocacy. It was a pleasure to speak with Saboria about her experiences in academia, sexism in medicine, and the advice she’d give to her thirteen year old self.

Maude Latour is a musician and singer-songwriter based in New York City. Maude writes songs for the college generation, being a junior at Columbia University herself. Her most popular songs include One More Weekend, Block Your Number and Furniture. She recently released Walk Backwards, a song dedicated to her love for her best friend. She’s been featured in Spotify playlists like Indie Pop, Lorem and young & free. As a specialist in collision repair, Dani fixes cars that have been damaged by crashes or fender benders, and makes them look like new. It was a pleasure to speak with Dani about being a woman in the trades, the misconceptions people have about her job, and the advice she’d give to young women and girls interested in going into auto work.

This week we have Cliona, the neuroscience phd. Cliona is a phd student who is combining neuroscience and virtual reality to study autism and joint attention. Joint attention is the ability to focus on the same thing with a peer. This can be an object, a person, or an event, and it begins to develop during the first months of life. It is especially important for communication and language learning, and for people who have autism, they have difficulty developing this. In Cliona’s research, patients with autism are required to interact with a virtual human in order to complete a puzzle only using their eye gaze, exercising their joint attention. Cliona is also the co-founder of Black in Neuroscience, an organization that highlights and empowers black academics in neuroscience, and provides resources. It was a pleasure to speak with Cliona about her research, the best and most frustrating things about her job, and the advice she’d give to young women and girls who are interested in neuroscience.

This week we have Abigail, the attorney. Abigail is a litigation associate based in Chicago. She specializes in commercial law, and posts about her work, and life on her instagram. It was a pleasure to speak with Abigail about the best and worst parts of her job, her advice and so much more.

On this episode of Women In: we have Jennie, the biologist. Jennie is a research associate working at a bio-pharmaceutical company in the San Francisco Bay Area. On her instagram, Jennie posts about her passion for science, advice for other girls interested in STEM, and her weight loss journey. It was a pleasure to speak with Jennie about her daily life as a scientist, her role models, and how she’d like her career to progress in the future.

This week on women in, we have Paulina, the EHS engineer. Paulina Castrellon is an environmental health and safety engineer in aerospace based on Los Angeles. In her work at Lockheed Martin, Paulina works to keep the environment, our communities and her employees safe. Paulina is a first generation Latina/Chicana college graduate, and is extremely passionate about helping other women of color achieve their goals in STEM industries such as hers. On her social media, you can find her speaking about the daily life of an engineer, the challenges that women of color face in stem, or just a cute picture of her and her dog, who popped in a few times during the interview. It was a pleasure to speak with Paulina about the best and most challenging parts of her job, the mentors who helped her along the way, and where she sees her career progressing in the future.
