Somm for the Day
A fun, engaging, super unpretentious podcast to help make wine more approachable. It's just fermented juice!
Ep. 1.8: How to Go to a Wine Tasting and Not Get Sh*tfaced
We have all been there. The best of intentions, clear eyes, full stomachs, can't lose. But alas, by the end we spent a TON of money on wine we never actually wanted - or honestly couldn't even afford.  Let's take a step back and revisit that approach. I will still be fun! I PROMISE! But maybe just take a minute to get those stars aligned to make sure you remember what you liked (write it down) and do a tiny bit of math to know what you are about to get yourself into. And remember, it is OK to dump out your wine. Wine I enjoyed during this episode: Sandlands Vineyard Lodi Zinfandel 2019 Glass I used to enjoy this wine during this episode: Riedel Vinum Riesling/ZinfandelYes, I used my Coravin. Ep. 1.7: Rose All Day Everyday and Twice on Sunday
Rosé is so freaking popular these days and I love it! There are two things I really want to make sure you take away from this new episode - 1. You are legally allowed to drink rosé all year long and 2. Rose is not made from the rose grape. It is made from all sorts of different red/black skin grapes. Pinot Noir? Yep. Cabernet Franc? You better believe it! Cabernet SAUVIGNON? HELL YES!I'll take you through some ways to make sure you are picking a rosé you will actually enjoy and impress all of your friends when you start using French terms like saignée. Let's get pouring!Wine I enjoyed during this episode - Rarecat Jennifer Rosé 2021 (Grenache)Glass I enjoyed the wine in - Riedel Vinum New World SyrahWine Connoissaurus Rex Podcast brought to you by Somm for the Day. Ep. 1.6: Wine Label Says What?
One of the most frustrating experiences in drinking wine can be figuring out what wine is actually inside that bottle! How the hell can you read a label that often is in a foreign language and you don't know if it is telling you who made it, where it was made, what it was made with, or what sandwich the winemaker ate while making the wine. Or worse, you went and told your wine friend that you love the Chablis grape or the Rioja grape only to get a giggle and an odd look. Damnit, those aren't grapes are they?  I'll spend the better part of an hour talking through some better ways to read a grape, some tricks and tips around popular regions and grapes around the world to help you navigate the shelf. What I enjoyed during this episode: Domaine J.A. Ep. 1.5: F*ck Around and Find Out
There is a fun meme/topic going around the internet these days that can be applied to loads of different situations. It’s called Fuck around and find out.Today, let’s look at what that means in the wine world and have some fun. There are rules. But we aren’t just here to talk about breaking rules, there are also accidents and mistakes.  And the wines we are about to check on are fun wines.Let’s start with the rule breakersIn the older world of wine, places like Europe, there are STRICT rules about how to make a wine. These rules are in place to manage quantities, quality of production, consistency, representation of a region. They need to proudly wear their region on their chest.More broadly, in Italy you have the Designation of Origin laws that break wines into tiers. It is often seen as a way to assist in identifying quality. Keep in mind though that quality is measured in consistency and following the rules. Even within the tiers, some wines are better than others but each tier is following (or not) the rules put in place. And now, you know what we have? We have Super Tuscans! And what about our friend Bob Ross and happy accidents? There are plenty of stories that have been shared but Dom Perignon wasn’t a random guy who walked in on a second fermentation and blushed. But the process of sparkling wine came about by accident due to the weather of the region. When wine is chilled to a low enough point, fermentation stops. When warmed up again, it can start a second fermentation – this is literally part of the champagne method.Naturally, this was not a controlled experiment and was in contrast to wines of the time – still. Wine I enjoyed - Tenuta San Guido Le Difese 2018Glass used - Riedel Vinum BordeauxEnjoy the whole episode, cheers!Wine Connoissaurus Rex Podcast brought to you by Somm for the Day. Ep. 1.4: GRAPE Madness
As the Men’s and Women’s NCAA tournaments kicked off, I decided to create a little bracket challenge of my own… GRAPE Madness! Pitting 16 red and 16 white grapes against each other, IG followers voted every day. This podcast will talk about some of what I learned along the way. Why did I do it? I like the structureIt gives at least a little organization to chaosI love the arguments it createsMakes you pick sometimes between your favorites early in the processOver the episode, I will talk about how I picked the grapes, the trends I noticed, why I thought it was a good idea, and ultimately reveal the winner! Tune in to learn more about the whole process and a slightly long-winded explanation of the importance of the Riesling grape.Wine I enjoyed - Domaine Jean Marc Bernhard Riesling 2016Glass used - Riedel Vinum Riesling/ZinfandelCheers!Wine Connoissaurus Rex Podcast brought to you by Somm for the Day. Ep. 1.2: Believe
You will quickly realize that I like to do two things in many of these podcasts. One – use analogies – it always helps me and hopefully it helps youTwo – reference pop culture stuffAs I record this episode, the world is just hours away from the release of Season 3 of Ted Lasso. Holy smokes, this couldn’t be more of a perfect time and topic. Now remember, this is a WINE podcast first so I will try to be a little heavier on the wine topics but good golly, I love Ted Lasso and this could end up being a 50/50 blend. This episode is full of Ted Lasso-isms, wine references, and just a lot of good fun. I promise, although there are absolutely Season 3, Episode 1 similarities (I wrote this after recording but ALSO after the first episode of Season 3 of Ted Lasso premiered) it is all coincidental.I spend some time talking about deduction in wine decisions and tasting, how it is ok to not know everything and rely on others for help. Use your words, not someone else's. I love this approach and it is always found in my Somm for the Day tasting notes. The lesson is all about taking in the aromas around you. It isn't rocket science, I swear!Wine I enjoyed - GD Vajra Langhe NebbioloGlass used - Riedel Vinum New World Pinot NoirCheers everyone, enjoy this episode!Wine Connoissaurus Rex Podcast brought to you by Somm for the Day. Ep. 1.3: I'd Like a Wordle with the Somm
Today, as I enjoy another delicious glass of wine – to be named shortly, I want to connect wine to wordle, the puzzle game that has taken the world by storm. Why?Pop cultureI play it every dayWithout realizing it, I have drawn on it for my approach to tasting wines. It is a global phenomenon that a LOT of people have played at least once.Starting to get a feel for today’s episode? The episode is somewhat split into the two different ways Wordle can be applied to the wine world: 1. Comparison of communities engaging in it and 2. Tasting wine.It is a fun comparison and continues my love of pop culture, wine, and analogies. Do you hate wine and wordle? Maybe this is the worst episode for you. Or it could be the best?
