In this episode, Nate, Andrew, and Ivan continue to discuss The Logic of The Body by Matthew LaPine. Here, the focus is on his chapter providing a model for how emotions work.Rather than providing a summary of the chapter, the focus is on topics that sparked interest. The discussion starts with our unconscious mind and how it must be accounted for, then moves to how our bodies qualify our emotions, before ending with how we use language to govern our internal worlds. You can listen to Nate interview Matthew LaPine about his book here, and read the earlier edition of the newsletter where the book is discussed here.Connect with us here:NateAndrewIvanThe intro music to this podcast is from one of Nate’s albums and the outro music is from one of Andrew’s. In this episode, Nate, Andrew, and Ivan continue to discuss The Logic of The Body by Matthew LaPine. Here, the focus is on his chapters on the body, both in the book of nature and in Scripture. They discuss how the best understanding of ourselves is holistic (we are a unity), but also dualistic (we have both an immaterial mind and a material body). Our minds are oriented toward language, but our bodies are oriented toward experience. While the discussion may be technical at times, this episode, and the last, are preparatory for the next two where the discussion will turn toward the nature of our emotions and how we can best cultivate emotional health in our daily lives. You can listen to Nate interview Matthew LaPine about his book here, and read the earlier edition of the newsletter where the book is discussed here.Connect with us here:NateAndrewIvanThe intro music to this podcast is from one of Nate’s albums and the outro music is from one of Andrew’s.Thank you for reading Where Soul Meets Body. In this episode, Nate, Andrew, and Ivan discuss The Logic of The Body by Matthew LaPine. They explain why they think it is important, and give a brief overview of the introduction and first chapter. In the course of the discussion, they unpack a dominant narrative in Christian circles about how we understand emotions and our responsibility for them. In this view, we have a responsibility to think our way into feeling correctly, and emotions have a strong moral component to them. This is in contrast with the dominant narrative in psychological circles, which can sometimes treat emotions as biological states merely relating to health. Both of these views miss the mark.Instead, we have to understand how the body qualifies our agency and our experience of emotions. The metaphor of a car and driver can be useful, as well as how the passengers of the car are construed. In the next episode, Nate, Andrew, and Ivan will move farther ahead in the book and discuss how we should understand ourselves as holistic beings with a tiered psychology. And hopefully, they’ll be another metaphor to make that more comprehensible. In this episode, Nate, Andrew, and Ivan discuss a couple of changes they’ve made over the last several months that have had a significant impact on their personal lives. For Andrew, it was saying no and setting boundaries, as well as leaning into more intimate friendships, which requires a certain openness to vulnerability. For Ivan, it was setting a regular bedtime and being willing to ask for help when he really needed it.For Nate, it was prioritizing the gym first thing in the morning during a season of stress, as well as putting boundaries on what and when he could eat.In all of our cases, boundaries have proved crucial, but so has been willing to be vulnerable and attend to our bodies as a way of attending to our mental and emotional health.Through the course of the episode, we mention several upcoming episodes we’re preparing to record. Until then, you can connect with Ivan through his website, and Andrew through his Linktree. The intro music to this podcast is from one of Nate’s albums and the outro music is from one of Andrew’s.Thank you for reading Where Soul Meets Body.
