Back on the cast this week is our collaborator through time and space and ERAS of our lives, singer-songwriter and wizard of discernment, Sofía Campoamor! We get an inside, retrospective look at Sofía's most studio project, "if you knew, i couldn't tell," including turning Wordle games into songs (and content!), world-building with friend of the pod Chris Peters, and an early ideation of this album that was all-oatmeal concept. Hopefully listening to this episode strengthens your instincts, or at least flexes your listening muscles. And we can't think of a better workout than that!

So much culture today! From swapping to catching up, there's culture all over the place. And there was music, and there were wonderful roses... speaking of standards and melodies! Jerome listened to Judy at Carnegie Hall, and Kenyon listened to A Strange Loop, and both have prepared book reports on their subjects. The two also remark on the simplicity of Tár, the complexity of Everything Everywhere All At Once, and Kenyon shares a tribute to his penpal and yours, Ryuichi Sakamoto. This may seem like an ambitious setlist of topics for the pod, but we pull it off stunningly.
Fact Chequé:
While Lydia Tár canonically conducts the Berlin Philharmonic, it was the Dresden Philharmonic who played and appeared in the film.

Are you ready for a true masterclass?? This week we have multi-hyphenate and MUNA-stan Matt Goldstein on the podcast, and yes, we cover all the topics you’d expect three iconic arrangers to discuss: key change theories, Eric Whitacre-inspired social media usernames, and facilitating from the page. We also dive into Matt’s work creating and leading the Gaia Music Collective and learn about how circle-singing and vocal improvisation guide him as a music director. We’re calling all the sensitive listeners, all the choir and a cappella nerds, all the preschoolers revealing their inner selves out there: it’s time to be free, wild, silly, and emotional! Join the #MattPartyParty!

What is a singer if not a voice? And what is this podcast if not two voices, who happen to belong to singers, picking apart yet another Rolling Stone All-Time list. We take umbrage, embrace vagueries, and rail against this list's many mistakes -- which is not surprising, because we famously hate hierarchies. The episode kind of writes itself in that way. But we keep things both expressive AND effusive throughout, without ever hiccuping or choking up even once. After all, we do have to live in a serious ethos.

We're Blaaaaaaaack!!! You know we couldn't stay away forever. Your two favorite gals are Black in the habit and back to all their old chestnuts -- Marianne Williamson's "Girlfriend, you are so on," Elastigirl's "I don't think so... I don't think so," and all the rest. In our grand return episode, we're celebrating the culmination of Black History Month by being iconic in these streets, finding the difference between lexicon and anthology, thanking VFX studios, the backbone of Hollywood, and recapping the many many things we missed: Tár, Avatar, Ruth Paul's Drag Race, Amber Riley on the Masked Singer, and much more. Plus, Jerome reveals his secret past life as a Boy Scout, Kenyon goes karoling, and we assign each other a bit of an assignment... Girlfriend, it is so good to be back on the air again!

This week, we are not talking about that thing. No, really. We're not. Instead, we remark on the prevalence of clowns, do another round of Pixar predictions, and think about how the metaverse will distort our perception of distance. Because when you think about it, the Oscars are a Civil War of their own, right? ... anyway, social media has made us audience to everything which includes you being audience to this podcast. Going live in three, two...

Summer looms, winter unends, and your two favorite crazy old ladies are back to discuss all the news that's fit to print: what's been going on at the library, queer bullies on television, and making money off of RuPaul's Drag Race. It's taken us a...moment to get this episode out, but you can just chalk it up to moving slowly! You should try it sometime. These are the best years of your life, after all.

There's so much happening in this episode, it will be hard to give this description a structure! But let's start with the content: firstly, we've got special correspondent hopeful and one of our favorite lyricists Chris Peters on the pod this week, which is its own special treat. And we're talking about tons of things, like why Chris wasn't a music major, how he would format his Genius page, and the surprising similarities between a song and a falafel sandwich, all while we discuss lyrical structure. So if you're debating between a bridge and a third verse, or just not sure what chiasma is, tune in! And as a special treat, drink every time you think, "Well, it's contextual."

With Oscars on the brain and some s'wintry weather overhead, that can only mean one thing: it's Black History Month! After we get swept up in the mess of the Academy Awards and white people accepting apologies, we dive into some texts by Black authors to reflect on history, memory, and how we exist after death. If you've been grappling with the messiness of the diaspora or other people's versions of ourselves or the elasticity of history right now... well first, take a deep breath. But then listen to this episode!

This episode kicks off a series we're beginning on the podcast all about lyrics. And today's theme: rhyme! Don't you love a good rhyme?? We're putting a lot on the table, from our personal definitions of rhyme (in addition to some more famous ones) to the non-universality of pronunciation, and others of the many ways words can connect. Also included: Oklahoma slander on Euphoria, Rihanna's baby, and anti-rhyme sentiment in pop music. Rhyme is about organizing attention, and it's time for you to organize your attention toward this episode!
