Can we choose to love someone? In this episode, we ask: Is love a feeling or choice? In trying to find an answer, we share our fairly strong and different points of view. Throughout our conversation, We examine the theory of one person who believes that love (or more specifically, being open to love) is always our choice. We discussed the role of love in an abusive relationship. We try to discover what we can choose in the relationship using logic and reasoning versus what our natural inclinations are regarding love as a feeling. We even touch on the way our primal instincts are triggered by attributes such as appearance and odor to influence our desire or willingness to mate. Is it possible to force ourselves to love someone when we don't actually feel it? Can we choose to avoid or stop loving someone? Do we have any control at all when it comes to love? We would love to hear your thoughts on the topic so join the conversation! “Does a man have to pay on a first date?” People on the street were asked this question by actors from a popular German comedy show but the answers they received in the actual segment were not nearly as interesting as comments under the video. One man had such a particularly grandiose justification of his position that we had no choice but to devote an entire episode to giving our take on his premise. This point of view surprised even ourselves! In this episode, we discuss the main question of who should pay on the first date, we reflect upon the importance of first impressions and, as usual, we share some funny stories from our own first dates. And now we turn the question to you. Who do you think should pay on the first date? Imagine yourself deep in love. You might want to tell your partner "I love you" every 10 minutes to make sure that they know how you feel about them. You want them to have absolutely no doubt about being loved. It's not quite realistic, is it? Your partner might even think you're crazy. But how else would you show your love? Some people come home every day with flowers and gifts. Some cook exquisite dinner meals to please their other half. Others may kiss and hug their partner at every opportunity. We all give what we believe is an unabashed and true expression of our love. And then, out of nowhere, you hear "I don't feel like you love me." But how is this possible when you have shown such an abundance of love and devotion? Clearly, they don’t appreciate all the loving things you’ve done.... And so begins the quarrels, tears and eventually parting. It's a pity, isn't it? In this episode, we will talk about the variety of ways we communicate love as described in Gary Chapman's book "5 Languages Of Love." We discuss how to recognize the different languages and how to "speak" with your lover in their “language.” We will tell our personal stories and consider if it is possible to make love last forever. We have touched upon the importance of communication and open dialogue in quite a few of our past episodes. In this episode, we decided to talk about it specifically and so we invited a professional linguist, Professor Tiffany Dyson (@tiffetzjiff) to inform the conversation. Tiffany shares some of the knowledge she has gained about communication through the language research in which she is involved as well as through her personal life experiences and travels. She also compares some of the notable differences in communication that exist between the United States, Korea, and Germany. Throughout this discussion, we were learning about the impact of the environment on our language, our vocabulary, and even our personalities. It was all very entertaining and informative, but then… something went wrong. Somehow, the conversation suddenly shifted (as they often seem to do) towards the topic of relationships. More precisely, open relationships. We began to share our views on the question of non-monogamy and trade experiences and theories. Listen to our quite “passionate” discussion and share your thoughts. Are you for them or against them? Are they to be considered normal? Or should they be regarded as a new disease plaguing society? Are you currently in an open relationship yourself? How did you come to the decision to "open up" your situation? Has it made things better or worse? We would definitely like to hear about it. "Hey, Daria, what's going on with you and Hollis?” “Are you dating Hollis?” “No?” “Why not?” “It is not possible that there’s nothing going on.” “After all, you met on Tinder!” You are a man and a woman! Clearly, you are deceiving yourselves and do not want to recognize the attraction between you!" And on it goes.... Is it possible to ignore our natural inclinations, respective gender identities and physical attraction to instead truly perceive and interact with each other in a strictly platonic way? In this episode, we will try to answer the question of whether friendship between a man and a woman is possible, and why there is nothing romantic or sexual between Hollis and myself. Maybe you can guess why... In discussing the possibility (or impossibility) of friendship between a man and a woman, we found that once it two people reach a certain point (intentionally or otherwise), it is extraordinarily difficult to escape the friendzone. Be careful! Listen to our stories! Draw your own conclusions! Do not allow yourself to be trapped in a zone of forced friendship and misery! Wow! Thank you all for the huge response and great feedback to our previous episode "Blitz Round #1: Answering some OkCupid Questions." We received many words of encouragement and gratitude for this Blitz-Round format. Almost everyone seemed to enjoy it, so obviously with approval and support like that, we will surely keep it going. But along with this, it seems that some people were particularly struck by Daria's statement that she doesn’t need a “nice” man around her. For context, we recommend that you listen to the previous episode: "Blitz Round #1: Answering some OkCupid Questions" Daria's answer seems to have caused quite a bit of opposition to this idea and so we decided to record a separate episode to clarify and expand upon the reasoning that causes her to draw that conclusion. In this episode, Daria will further discuss her interpretation of the words “nice” and “strong” and “smart. ” Is her view because she has russian mentality or because it's right way to think about relationships between man and woman? We will also share some very personal and intimate experiences from our lives, which served to inform our positions on the relationship between a man and a woman. Do you find intelligence more sexually appealing then physical beauty? 4. If you can choose only two qualities in the partner out of the following three: nice, attractive and intelligent, which would you choose? 5. Do you think smoking cigarettes is a gross habit? 6. About how long would you want your next relationship to last? 7. Could you date someone that was a slob? 8. Is Germany doing a good job in terms of environmental protection? 9. What are the most fun (and not so much fun) parts of dating? 13. Do you ever throw, kick, smash or hit things when you are irritated? 14. "No" means "No." Right? We had so much fun with it that we might even make it a series! Feel free to share your answers and send us your own questions for the next Blitz Round. Do people really evaluate us based solely upon our appearance? Are we treated differently by others when we don’t appear to fit their description of “normal”? Could it be that this often negatively interpreted thought is most often rooted within our own minds? In this episode, we welcome our very first guest: Tattoo artist Ina Bond (www.instagram.com/inabond). Honestly and openly, Ina describes how her desire to rebel and prove something to the outside world eventually led to an exploration and acceptance of herself through being tattooed and later tattooing others. Ina gives useful advice on what a person should consider before getting a tattoo and shares her thoughts on how to choose a design as well as the artist who will interpret it. She describes how tattoos can affect the body, why some people get addicted to this process and how one’s perception of the world can change once tattooed. All in all, we had a very entertaining and lively conversation filled unexpected discoveries and conclusions. Stay with us to the end and enjoy the frankness of our guest! Almost every day, we compare ourselves to other people. Often we take someone as an example of what we think we should be. We want to be able have what they have or do what they do. And very often, we become upset or jealous because we are not as beautiful, successful, or happy as someone else seems to be. We can look at Hollywood celebrities, famous musicians or worldclass atheletes as benchmarks, even as they are somewhere far away in a fairytale land living the lives we think we wish to live. We can imitate their clothing or hairstyles and use the products that we are told that they use with no distress. But comparing ourselves with friends, acquaintances and colleagues is different and somehow much more frustrating. Why did the person you sat right next to in class receive a better grade than you? Are they smarter? Better? Luckier? How is your friend happily married while you are still alone? Maybe because she's prettier or slimmer or has bigger breasts? Should we try to be more intelligent, more attractive, more interesting, more productive? Or should we just learn to love ourselves for who we are? Is it possible to love ourselves for who we are and not to pay attention to other people? Where is the line between comparison and competition? How do you compare yourself to others for your own benefit and not to your own detriment? All that and much more in this episode. Our stories, advice, doubts and theories. Our opinions didn't align until the end, so as you listen while compare our positions, let us know who's viewpoint resonates with you most. Or should we even try to make such comparisons?
