A tour of my music collection and what I'm finding in there
Ep. 18: Carnival
Hiya! My name's Terry J. Aman and in this, my 18th episode of VideoFuzzy the Soundtrack titled "Carnival," I celebrate artists in my collection beginning with the letter N. I open with a nice comment from my friend Joe Koppinger about episode 17. You can learn more about what he gets up to pop culture and comic book-wise at his YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@CrazyHungarian/  Then, in a bit of Housekeeping, comments on potential parallels between a couple millennial releases and punk era music I'd touched on in episode 17, and a few new unmarketed features I've encountered in my Apple Music app functionality on my PC and share a few workarounds I've discovered. My Title Track for this one, "Carnival," opens with Natalie Merchant's single by that name, which opens my conversation about Influences [artists with entire LPs in my collection] where I talk about Natalie Merchant's 1995 release "Tigerlily." My Lost Tracks resumes a thread I'd brought up with my Apple Music app discussion, as well as a couple Nickelback songs and some easy listening and jazz music I recovered into my collection. In other Influences, I talk about Nirvana, opening with a clip I tracked down of musician Maxwell Hughes covering their "Smells Like Teen Spirit," more at his Maxwell Hughes Music YouTube channel at  https://bit.ly/4sZu93M Then comments on "Territorial Pissings" hand off to a discussion of Chris Gaines' "Right Now." Additional Influences in my collection include No Doubt, Natalie Imbruglia, Nina Simone and Nicki French.  In Breakouts [artists with multiple songs in my collection], comments on Nickelback, Nat King Cole, Nine Inch Nails, and the contributions of Nathan Fillion and Neil Patrick Harris to the Joss Whedon musicals "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" and "Commentary!" Old Business pulls up the Monty Python's Flying Circus "Marilyn Monroe" sketch from their 1988 release "The Final Ripoff." My recording includes some audio from the "Pearl Harbor" sketch, posted to their YouTube channel at https://bit.ly/4cQcxSc. The original sketch is posted there as well: https://bit.ly/485JAPw Under Sparks [artists with one song in my collection], I talk about Neoni, Nancy Sinatra, Nazareth, Never the Bride, Nice and Wild, New Stories, Nerf Herder, NVRLSS and Nikki Blonsky [et al.] in the absolute show-stopper finale from John Waters' 2007 remake of "Hairspray." As always, any "music" or "singing" anyone thought they heard in this tiny indie podcast I can assure you that it wasn't. Any low-bar karaoke attempts were nothing more than simple sketch reference included for illustrative purposes to prompt listeners to track down and explore commercially available music through officially licensed sources and is by no means meant to infringe on anyone's copyright, licensing or distribution agreements. Go forth, buy songs and support the artists you love. Ep. 17: Long Way Down
Terry J. Aman, left, and Minneapolis artist Mikey Heinrich. Hiya! My name's Terry J. Aman and in this, my 17th episode of VideoFuzzy the Soundtrack titled "Long Way Down," I celebrate artists in my collection beginning with the letter M. Technically it's the second entry for M artists -- Ep. 16: Angels Would Fall focused on Melissa Etheridge and the half-dozen LPs of hers in my collection, and you can track that down as well. My Title Track for this one, "Long Way Down," opens with Michael Penn's 1992 single by that name, which opens my conversation about Influences [artists with entire LPs in my collection]. I talk about Michael Penn's 1989 single "No Myth," and several tracks in his 1992 LP release "Free For All." In other influences, I talk about Madonna, Maroon 5, Mindy Smith, Mannheim Steamroller and Meredith Brooks. In Breakouts [artists with multiple songs in my collection], I feature original music and a conversation with longtime friend and Minneapolis artist Mikey Heinrich, who you can follow at his YouTube channel, absolute joy to chat with about his "Love Song to Jane Espensen" and more. Other Breakouts in my collection I chat about Marilyn Manson, Matchbox 20, Muse, Miranda Lambert, Meghan Trainor, Memphis May Fire, The Mamas and The Papas, Michael Jackson, Me'shell Ndegeocello and Miss Li. Under Sparks [artists with one song in my collection], I talk about Mary Chapin Carpenter, Missy Higgins, Moby, Mos Def, My Darkest Days f/ Ludacris, Moloko, The Mountain Goats, Murray Head, Missy Elliot f/ Mya, P!nk, Lil Kim and Christina Aguilera, Ming Tea and Masanori Akita. As always, any "music" or "singing" anyone thought they heard in this tiny indie podcast I can assure you that it wasn't [from me, at least -- Mikey Heinrich's original works used with permission of the artist]. Any low-bar karaoke attempts were nothing more than simple sketch reference included for illustrative purposes to prompt listeners to track down and explore commercially available music through officially licensed sources and is by no means meant to infringe on anyone's copyright, licensing or distribution agreements. Ep. 16: Angels Would Fall
Hiya! My name's Terry J. Aman and breaking format a bit, my 16th episode of VideoFuzzy the Soundtrack, titled "Angels Would Fall," is an artist-focused episode about Melissa Etheridge. Yup, my Apple Music collection features six LPs by this artist, including her self-titled release, "Brave and Crazy," "Never Enough," "Yes I Am," "Your Little Secret" and "Breakdown." I open with a discussion of my first encounters with this artist, her music video for "Similar Features" and buying her self-titled LP release. In "Title Track," I talk about the music video I recorded and sent to my now husband in the early days of our relationship, recording myself walking the residential streets of Minot, North Dakota, and my emotional connection to the song "Angels Would Fall." I share a clip of that video to VideoFuzzy's Instagram account here: https://www.instagram.com/videofuzzy. I then talk about her "Yes We Are" tour with the Indigo Girls, which I missed hearing about by days when they were through my part of the world. Instead, I was able to check out her performance at the Fort Lauderdale War Memorial Auditorium on Jan. 21, 2025, posted to YouTube by the Skip Roper Sings account. You can check that out here for as long as it is posted: https://bit.ly/3MUZ9lq Finally, I talk about some of the themes she explores in her discography, including sensuality, openness and commitment. Also, this episode marks my second-ever entry in VideoFuzzy the Soundtrack: The Video! which you can check out here: https://youtu.be/NpO-5nIjXbo Enjoy! As always, any "music" or "singing" anyone thought they heard in this tiny indie podcast I can assure you that it wasn't. Ep. 15: Everybody Knows
Hiya! My name's Terry J. Aman and in this, my 15th episode of VideoFuzzy the Soundtrack titled "Everybody Knows," I celebrate three years of this project and artists in my collection beginning with the letter L. First, in a bit of an update, I share my review of Guadalajaran artist and DJ Benjamin Koll's release of "Dance Love Dream" https://bit.ly/4627Hys which he was hard at work completing when I met with him this summer. It came together beautifully, and is the topic of my first ever "VideoFuzzy the Soundtrack .. The Video! Ep. 1: Benjamin Koll's Dance Love Dream" at https://youtu.be/Ho7lQ9IIUas -- enjoy!  My Title Track for this one, "Everybody Knows," I lift from a spirited and delightful conversation with Shreveport, La., teacher John Allen, friend from my theater days in Minot and friend of the pod, appearing in ep. 6 to chat with me about Ed Sheeran. This time we explore the work of Leonard Cohen through the lens of "Hallelujah" (referenced at SNL cold open https://youtu.be/BG-_ZDrypec?si=nz0uTkbquwKRVzLq ), as well as "Closing Time," "Anthem," "The Future," "First We Take Manhattan," "Who By Fire," "Tower of Song" and closing with "Everybody Knows." Quick show so far, as of this episode, I've not chatted about all of them, but I've covered nearly 2,400 songs by some 350 artists, which is astonishing to me as I've still got more than half of the alphabet to cover -- looking forward to it! In other Influences, artists with full LPs in my collection, I chat about Lady Gaga, Led Zeppelin, Letters to Cleo, Lennon, Leah Andreone, Loreena McKennitt, Lil' Ed and the Blues Imperials, Linda M. Smith, Lisa Loeb, Live, Ludovico Einaudi, Lorie Line and Loom. In Breakouts, artists with multiple songs in my collection, I chat about Lizzo, my Denver DJ friend Drew Brady's EP release Life After Earth, Laura Branigan, Les Paul, Linkin Park, Lorde and Lauren Christy. Under Sparks, artists with one song in my collection, I talk about LBLVNC & Stephen Geisler's cover of "No Time to Die," Lo-Fang, Lou Reed, Lita Ford and Ozzy Osbourne, Laura Love, Lucinda Williams, Ludacris, LeVel, Liz Phair and Lily Allen.  As always, any "music" or "singing" anyone thought they heard in this tiny indie podcast I can assure you that it wasn't. Any low-bar karaoke attempts are nothing more than simple sketch reference included for illustrative purposes to prompt listeners to track down and explore commercially available music through officially licensed sources and is by no means meant to infringe on anyone's copyright, licensing or distribution agreements. Ep. 14: Osito
Hiya! My name's Terry J. Aman and in this, my 14th episode of VideoFuzzy the Soundtrack titled "Osito," I dive into and celebrate the World Music entries in my collection, along with artists in my collection beginning with the letter K. My Title Track "Osito" is from the past three years or so I've been listening to Spanish artist by way most recently of Mexico, Benjamin Koll (channel: https://bit.ly/4627Hys) a creative force going back to Madrid in the '90s. I have five of his LPs in my collection. The half-year delay in this episode was a scheduling issue; if I could wait til July, he'd be DJ'ing an event eight hours up the road from me and ... I just so craved this opportunity to meet with him in person I erred on the side of delaying this production so as to make that happen. In all reality [looks back at the last seven episodes of big sister production, VideoFuzzy] I had plenty to do in the meantime. Along with our conversation, my Influences [full LPs/World Music] for this set under world music included Benjamin Koll's "Songs for a Better Future" from 2017, "All Systems Go" from 2020, "Once in a Lifetime" from 2021, "Osito" from 2022 and "8 Days in a Bear's Life" from 2023, with a peek at a release he has slated for this fall, very exciting. Also, Kashtin's "Akua Tuta" from 1994, Kukuruza's "Crossing Borders" from 1993 (Kukuruza "Porushka Poranya" - https://bit.ly/4621YbX), and Twelve Girls Band "Eastern Energy" from 2004 (https://bit.ly/46uwWcQ). Also, Robbie Robertson and The Red Road Ensemble's "Songs for The Native Americans" from 1994. In Influences [full LPs/standard] for this set, K artists with full LPs in my collection, I talk about Kate Bush "The Whole Story" from 1986 (Kate Bush "Wuthering Heights" https://bit.ly/46Aoitl and https://bit.ly/40END1q), Kiss' "The Very Best of Kiss" from 2002, which I chat about with my friend Jason Lund from high school, who I'd say was a solid influence on my musical interests at a formative time. In Breakouts, artists with multiple songs in my collection, world music edition, I have multiple songs each by Shakira and Falco. Standard collection, I have multiple entries from Kesha, Kansas, Korn, k.d. lang, Keith Forsey and Kim Richey. In Sparks, artists with one song in my collection, standard edition, I have songs by K7, KT Tunstall, Kim Wilde ("Keep Me Hanging On" https://bit.ly/40dBErw), Katy Perry, Kendall Kelly, Kelly Clarkson and Karla Devito. In Sparks, world music edition, I talk about songs by STi, Las Ketchup, Saez, Tommy Heavenly 6, The Mars Volta and Vitek or Origa ("Inner Universe" https://bit.ly/4eLpzQt), along with an overview on world music generally. As always, any "music" or "singing" anyone thought they heard in this tiny indie podcast -- especially this one -- was simple sketch reference included for illustrative purposes to prompt listeners to track down and explore commercially available music through officially licensed sources and is by no means meant to infringe on anyone's copyright, licensing or distribution agreements. Go forth, buy songs and support the artists you love. And for more, please add, subscribe and follow me wherever you get your podcasts, or contact me through the link above or by emailing [email protected]. Happy listening!
