Wanted to love it
I listened to this pod because I am a huge fan of Veronica Mars and I loved Jenny on Buffering. I enjoyed a lot of things about it, but didn’t care for the way the hosts always complained about the scripts, characters, and creator. They even admitted they were over critical in season three and decided to consolidate three episodes into one podcast so they could concentrate on the “positive” stuff. That didn’t even work for them…they went right back to slamming so much of the content. It was aggravating because I really liked the show and wanted to listen to a pod that celebrated it. Oh well.

Delightful
This pod is simply delightful! Jenny is super cute & I think Helen is a great counterpart to Jenny’s super cuteness! I loved Buffering but their recaps got lost in a ton of bs…which can be important but it’s not as fun to relive about a show! I think Helen contributes to Jenny’s lightness in a great way!

Love it!
I discovered the podcast on the recent crossover episode with Live from Pemberley and have been binging it ever since. I give it 5 out of 5 long lens cameras. I hope Jenny and Helen do another podcast together!

5 out of 5
I give this podcast 5 out of 5 Mars driving Saturns in Neptune 🪐. Thanks for making me like Jackie! I rewatch this every year and this was my first time “rewatching via podcast”. The best parts: Jenny yelling HELLLEEEEEENNN & Helen saying “Urinal”. 👏 👏 👏

Funny and brilliant
I’m a longtime fan of VM, and was thrilled to discover this podcast earlier this year. So fun and witty, and the energy between Helen and Jenny is fantastic.

Total Mars Nerdfest
Deep dives into every possible detail of this great TV show. The sharp, witty hosts keep me entertained with their commentary on everything from costumes, music, characters, social class to Southern California culture- nothing is left out

Lots of fun
So much fun to listen! I’m watching Veronica Mars for the first time and have really enjoyed listening to Jenny and Helen recap the episodes. Very funny!

I started this show at the beginning of the pandemic. At the time, I had an opportunity to leave an area where the danger was high to go be with family, but put myself in 2-week isolation first. Those 2 weeks were a really scary and confusing time. Helen

VMI Pod is better than Veronica Mars itself
I watched a few episodes of Veronica Mars around the time it came out, but it doesn’t hold a candle to the entertainment that VMI pod provides. Jenny and Helen are both incredibly funny, smart, talented, and have great chemistry to boot.

I give this show 5 out of 5 spy plants on Clarence Wiedman’s desk
Starting as a casual listen after hearing Helen Zaltzman as a guest on Home Cooking, this show has quickly become one of my all time favorites. Helen and Jenny are the truest of fans, as they love Veronica Mars while also doggedly pointing out problems and ridiculousness. They glory in the best moments from great characters like Wallace, Weevil, and Leo, appreciate Veronica’s detective prowess, and share details that enhance the viewing experience. Listening to VMI is like having a cappuccino at the Neptune Only Place with the hosts.

I needed this.
Veronica Mars is one of those tv shows I still escape to. I’m glad I found this pod cast.

I could listen to Helen and Jenny for hours
I love the way Helen can make Jenny laugh more than almost anything in the world. Their chemistry is definitely a selling point for this podcast. I love listening to them lovingly tear the show apart (I know they’re now trying to get away from being so negative which is a little bit of a bummer to be honest). Part of the reason I’ve come to enjoy nostalgia recap podcasts is the way you can pick apart what was wrong with a show while still enjoying and even loving it at the same time. A lot of Veronica Mars was problematic and some of it just not very good but it ultimately appealed to us enough that we watched it anyway and are now listening to a podcast about it over a decade later. I guess what I’m trying to say is that I appreciate Helen and Jenny’s criticisms because it feels like it’s born out of the desire for the show to have been better and lived up to its full potential. And while I’m sad that it’s switching to 3 episodes per episode (which means less Helen making Jenny laugh 😭) I understand work/life balance and I hope it helps you to keep making this wonderful podcast!

So good
A goddamn perfect podcast. I love Helen, Jenny and Lowe even more than I love Veronica...not more than Wallace though.

This is the perfect antidote to 2020
I just found this podcast and now for an hour a day I can hide from the world and remember a long time ago. Thank you for making this.

Unsure if they like the show.
Like other reviews have mentioned, they sit high up on a pedestal basically ripping apart a show they claim to like. I completely understand that there is problematic stuff in Veronica Mars and VMars herself can get pretty annoying, and I encourage digging into that - but the way the hosts do it is solely from a position of superiority. If you want to listen to a podcast that discusses the show, faults and all, in a more positive fun light (rather than straight bashing) listen to Bring Backup!

Perfect for Veronica Mars fans
A loving & critical review of this essential piece of 2004 pop culture. My favorite part is when Helen makes Jenny laugh way too hard.

Such a fun listen. I love that you are pretty straightforward about the highs and lows of the show.

Jenny and Helen are delightful
I am a fan of Helen’s from The Allusionist and of Jenny’s from Buffering the Vampire Slayer so when I learned they were doing a pod together I was super excited! I had never watched Veronica Mars prior to the start of this pod so I have been watching for the first time as episodes of the pod are released. I love that they avoid spoilers and the analysis is as fun as it is insightful. It is great to listen to a something that acknowledges the issues with the show while making it clear that the hosts still really love and enjoy it.

Good show
I like the podcast a lot. Jenny has a vast repertoire of delightful laughs, and Helen is brilliant and witty as always. The show can be hyper-critical, often for reasons of sensitivity that seem somewhat obscure to me. But still, worth a listen for any Mars fan.

It’s okay to criticize stuff you like!
I don’t really understand the complaints that Jenny and Hellen make fun of Veronica Mars. I have loved this show since it was on TV...and recognize that it’s a deeply flawed, sometimes silly, sometimes problematic show with lots of fun plot holes and bad 2000’s outfits. It’s okay to criticize (and critique!) stuff you like.

Just the right amount of skepticism
Look I love Veronica Mars as much as the next girl, but a recap podcast that didn’t acknowledge that most of the time (post season 1) it is a bonkers show that narratively barely holds together, would be doing a disservice to the listeners and the show itself. I love this podcast BECAUSE it takes the good with the bad and Jenny and Helen have shown that they can love something and also point out its obvious flaw. Laughing with/at VMars with them is truly one of my favorite pastimes right now. Can’t get enough!

Confusion
I can never tell whether you are being critical of the writing or of the characters. It makes the whole podcast feel condescending, like you’re snidely lowering yourself to even bother talking about Veronica Mars.

Yes, you can love a show and criticize it too
Amazing to me some of the reviews here taking the hosts to taks for actually criticing the show. That's part of ANY fandom. It's possible — I'd argue necessary — to acknowledge a show's flaws and still love it, like the hosts do here. I subscribe to Jenny's and Helen's other shows too, but I think this one's my favorite among them, and it fits right in with my other favorites that also make fun of the shows they love, "The Greatest Generation" and "Who Back When."

The only comfort left in this dark world
This is the only recap show I listen to. Helen is an angel. Every week, I feel a flush of delight when I see the new episode in my app.

They claim to like the show, and yet..
I have listened to the first 20 episodes so far and even though the hosts referenced and noted that some reviewers felt like they disliked the show, and protested their live for it, the tone hasn’t changed a bit. It’s very wearing to hear both hosts noticing that the way the show handles issues fifteen years ago is sometimes problematic now, and take issue with teenagers being inconsistent and making mistakes - in both cases some suspension of disbelief is required. How long was the kid holding that popsicle omg it would have melted - who cares? The point is that teens gonna teen and story-wise the scene fulfilled a purpose, so let’s discuss that. The hosts also imply that in even covering things like revenge porn or sexual assault or social inequality the show is being problematic. I’m gonna finish this current episode but I see myself unsubscribing next.

Amazing!
Love this podcast... I loved Veronica Mars when it was on & it’s so much fun going through it in detail with the hosts who love it, too. It’s especially great as the hosts are funny & intelligent. I had already been listening to both of them on their other podcasts when they started this; they work so well together. The only complaint is that I always think it comes out on Mondays and then have to wait. But really that complaint is about my terrible memory, so still five stars l!

This podcast is curing my corona blues
Honestly, listening to this podcast makes me feel happy and human while the rest of the world feels scary and overwhelming. Helen is SO funny, she makes me laugh outloud. Their dynamic is wonderful, and they seem to have so much fun. Their love of the show combined with their realistic look at its flaws is deeply fulfilling to me. If you aren’t listening yet, you should be!

I made it to season 2...
But they just bashed it to death for a show they claim to like. They picked apart everything and I can’t tell if there’s a single character they root for. I like both Jenny and Helen on other podcasts (I love buffering and have enjoyed Helen’s Potterless appearances) but this has become unlistenable. Too much negativity didn’t leave any joy for this podcast and I didn’t want to completely ruin my love for Veronica Mars.

Watching Veronica Mars for the first time with Helen and Jenny. This is probably the slowest I’ve watched a season of television in years in order to keep pace with the podcast. I appreciate their thoughts and the joy that Veronica Mars brings them. It’s definitely made watching the show more fun. I found this show through Helen’s other great podcasts (The Allusionist and Answer Me This) and I’d give it five extra long lens cameras.

Fun and healthily critical
I don’t really understand the criticisms here that seem to suggest that the hosts don’t like the show and complain all the time. Liking something immensely doesn’t mean that you have to love every second of it. My favorite movie of all time is Dirty Dancing which is, let’s face it, not that good. So much dumb and bad about it. And yet, so much to love. VM is so much better, objectively, and yet, very much of its time. And these hosts understand all of that and offer this hilarious commentary in response to all of it. As my mom says, there’s no accounting for taste, so I don’t post this trying to change anyone’s mind who dislikes the podcast, but to say I enjoy it very much. Thanks Jenny and Helen!

My favorite pod right now
I just spent a great summer talking about the norms of the period vs now with my kid, so that part of the pod is good for me, and I love the razzing of the dark rooms in the high school and Veronica’s tiny, tiny clothes. There is a vest in season 3 that I cannot wait to hear about, it’s amazing. Veronica Mars is such a great show BECAUSE it is part noir, part high school soap, part unintentional time-capsule, and in most ways its mistakes made it even better as a piece of art that was trying something brand new. I love this pod for capturing what I loved because it was bad and what I loved because it was great!

Still Holding On
As someone who loves Veronica Mars I was really excited when this podcast was announced. It is disappointing that every week I download the show just to listen to these 2 hosts bash it to death. Yes, it was a different time. Yes, we should point out where the show, in hindsight, missed the mark, but I don’t think either host even likes the show to begin with. So, every week I hope that as the show matures the hosts do as well but so far there is little promise of that happening. I hope that I am proven wrong.

It was a different time!
I love Veronica Mars but I also very much appreciate this podcast for calling out the aspects of the show that have not aged well. They do so with proper reverence paid to our dear Veronica Mars (drink!) and especially the long-suffering Wallace who is the unsung hero of this show. If you’re a Marshmallow with some perspective, you will love this recap show.

Obsessed
This is by far my favorite podcast. For some reason I had never watched this show and I love the no spoilers recap of each episode. Helen and Jenny are hilarious. I’ve been a big fan of Answer Me This for years and love the quick wit and banter of both shows. Thank you Helen, Jenny and Martin for making this wonderful show, it brings me so much joy.

So much fun to recap with Helen and Jenny!
I am a huge JOY fan and happened to read that she had this podcast... right when I finished my watch-thru of the entire Veronica Mars series top to bottom. I am having a blast not only digging in and poking fun at the show (and early 00’s) but getting to know Jenny beyond her music. She and Helen are like having friends over for a roast and I adore it.
Snnnnarf!
Huge fan
I haven’t even watched an entire episode of VM but as Helen and Jenny hilariously describe the characters and situations, I find myself laughing out loud. Their banter is classic. This is a great podcast even for non-VM fans.

Can’t give it a zero.... so I guess a 1 will do
If you are looking for a podcast that talks about one of your favorite tv shows with a negative opinion about everything from fashion of the time to poor lighting to bad environmental choices look no further. If you want to listen to two sad women go on and on and on about the same issues they have with the show in every episode and beat the dead horse and then beat it again and again, this podcast is for you. I have listened to the first 8 episodes hoping it gets better but all they do is take joy from their moral superiority over the choices of a fictional character on tv. Not fun to listen to. And the American is loud and the Brit is quiet so they can’t even get sound levels equal to one another. Amateur mistake but they aren’t amateurs to the podcast world. They need to fix this and find more positive things to say about the show. They also need to research things better before they start to record and not just make guesses as to why things were done as they were on the show, maybe put the “investigates” part of their title into action and talk to people affiliated with the show.

Best Veronica Mars podcast
Did you recently binge watch all of Veronica Mars? Do you have many questions? That is, did you love the show and also find it problematic? Do you love Weevil and enjoy hilarious commentary on fashion of the early 21st century? Have you noticed Logan’s balletic arm movements and wondered what’s up with that? Does Duncan confound you? Then this show is for you. Jenny Owen Youngs and Helen Zaltzman host hands down the best Veronica Mars podcast on the internet. I laugh out loud every week, and you will too!

If you hate VMars
I enjoy Buffering the Vampire Slayer and the conversations that come up on that show. I was hoping to have that approach brought to Veronica Mars. Instead Helen spends an hour sharing everything she doesn't like about the episodes and characters, while Jenny listens and laughs (not sure whether genuinely or awkwardly). I might give it a try in a couple months to see if they've changed their approach. But as it is now, I sadly don't recommend this podcast, esp if you're a fan of the show.

Hoping for more
I’ve been searching for a podcast to rewatch Veronica Mars with, and have been through a few disappointing ones. Came here because I have enjoyed Buffering the Vampire Slayer. I wish some of the effort and magic of that podcast had made its way onto this one. I have hope that these two lovely and funny women will find what is so special about this wonderful and fun tv show and translate it into their podcast. It feels like a chore for them to get through the details of the show each week. I’m not sure if they even enjoy watching it! It’s like watching a show you love, that you know is a little cheesy and dated, with a friend that nitpicks everything. It takes all the fun out of it! Maybe they need more guest stars that love the show, or they need to mess with the format some. Perhaps they should take a moment and figure out why they decided to do this show in the first place. I will continue to listen, mainly because I love rewatching the show and having someone to share it with! Here’s to hoping they start having more fun and let go of the clothing and lighting problems and investigate why this show has become cult favorite to so many.
