Upstaged: Parkinson's and the Never-Ending Improvisation
Upstaged: Parkinson's and the Never-Ending Improvisation
Rick Seaholm
Reflections on a variety of unrelated topics, as seen through the eyes of a person with Young Onset Parkinson's Disease. Each topic is inspired by a different "remarkable stimulus" (using vocabulary from the "No Other Life" podcast) that begs to be expressed musically.
Fatigue (featuring "Sfumato")
A quintessential symptom of Parkinson's Disease is fatigue, and it seems to hit whenever it wants. As it happens, I'm fighting back yawns as I type this, in spite of fairly sufficient sleep the last few nights, my usual session of brisk cardio exercise this morning, and typical diet. There's so often just no rhyme or reason. The topic of fatigue makes a great complement to the official theme of ths podcast series. It's called "Sfumato", named for a visual art term (painting, typically) where gradual blending of colors create soft, hazy transitions between light and shadow, without any harsh or distinct outlines-- exactly my goal as I thought of this music being part meditation, part silence. See the Mona Lisa for an example of sfumato in action. Introduction
Where he talks about how important it is to recognize all your qualities, traits and characteristics in order to see the full you. Welcome to the new series, where I'll be talking about my life, improvising with my unexpected scene partner, Pedey (that is, Parkinson's Disease). My body revolves around PD so it's necessary to shape my life that way in order to truly thrive in the world. **Upstaged and the No Other Life project  are independently conceived of and managed by me, Rick Seaholm, ad-free and without interruption for all listeners, and I appreciate all the support.
